Spreading A Love for God and His Glory June 11, 2017 I and the Father are one. John 10:30

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 135:1-5 Leader: Praise the LORD! Praise the name of the LORD, give praise, O servants of the LORD, who stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God! All: Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing to his name, for it is pleasant! Leader: For the LORD has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel as his own possession. All: For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Praise the LORD! *JESUS I COME Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into thy freedom, gladness and light, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of my sickness into thy health, Out of my wanting and into thy wealth, Out of my sin and into thyself, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into the glorious gain of thy cross, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of earth s sorrows into thy balm, Out of life s storms and into thy calm, Out of distress into jubilant psalm, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of myself to dwell in thy love, Out of despair into raptures above, Upward forever on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into the joy and light of thy home, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of the depths of ruin untold, Into the peace of thy sheltering fold, Ever thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to thee. Jesus, I come to thee. - 2 -

*COME YE SINNERS Come ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore. Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity joined with power. He is able, he is able; he is willing; doubt no more. Come ye needy, come and welcome; God s free bounty glorify: True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall. If you tarry till you re better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream. All the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. This he gives you, this he gives you, tis the Spirit s rising beam. Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; pleads the merit of his blood. Venture on him; venture wholly, let no other trust intrude. None but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good. *PRAYER OF PRAISE *TRINITARIAN CONFESSION All: Blessed is the kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and unto all ages. Amen. God Calls Us The Lord summons his people to worship and we respond in obedience. The Lord s call is a call to action. We gather, praise, adore, give thanks, etc. The Call to Worship is a joyful summons and a clear reminder that worship is our coming into God s presence by his command, and not our command that he come into our presence. - 3 - *Indicates when to stand. *HOLY, HOLY, HOLY - Hymn #100 Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! God Cleanses Us The biblical response to God s call to be in his presence is confessing our sins. We humble ourselves when we approach our God. This is a corporate prayer of all God s people. It is a great privilege of the gospel that we can stand forgiven before the Lord of glory. Holy, Holy, Holy, all the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee Perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Revelation 21:8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. All: Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN - 4 -

DECLARATION OF GRACE: 1 Corinthians 6:11 But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. *COMMON CONFESSION OF FAITH: The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven: and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit; the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets; and we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Nicene Creed In the fourth century, Christian leaders gathered to express the truths of our Christian faith against heresy. This creed is the result. When we recite this creed together, we are affirming and remembering the faith that is universally held by all Christians throughout history (the word catholic simply means universal ). In our worship, we are connected with others in the past, the present, and the future.. - 5 -

Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) *BEAUTIFUL LORD When the storm is raging all around me, you are the peace that calms my troubled sea. When the cares of this world darken my day, you are the light that shines, and shows me the way. Oh the beauty of your majesty, on the cross you showed your love for me. (Chorus) Beautiful Lord, awesome and mighty, I m captured by this love I see. Beautiful Lord, tender and holy, your mercy brings me to my knees. It s your mercy that has made me free, beautiful Lord. When my sin is all that I can see, your grace remains the shelter that I seek. And when my weakness is all I can give, your gentle Spirit gives me strength again. Oh the beauty of your majesty, on the cross you showed your love for me. (Chorus 2x) OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) - 6 -

BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD ABOVE Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea, a great High Priest whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, My name is written on his heart; I know that while in heav'n he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart, no tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God the Just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me. Behold him there! The risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless righteousness; the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace! One with himself I cannot die, my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ, my Savior and my God, with Christ, my Savior and my God. Hebrews 4:14-16 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. - 7 -

Sermon Series: Trinity Sunday Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. Jesus is God - John 10:22-33 (ESV) 22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one. 31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God. III. The Joy of Stuffy, Ol timey Religion Sermon Questions for Further Reflection 1. Consider: J.I. Packer When we disregard the study of God, we sentence ourselves to stumble through life blindfolded, with no sense of direction and no understanding of our surroundings. How might this help respond to those who only want practical faith and have no stomach for thinking about their Christian faith? 2. Jesus enemies understood the implications of what he was saying (v- 33). Why do many today struggle to have even this level of understanding? If Jesus is not God, why is Christianity then meaningless? 3. All religions are the same" is such an easy thing to disprove. Why do people keep saying it? How is it just a thinly disguised human arrogance? 4. Consider: C.S. Lewis: All sorts of people are fond of repeating the Christian statement that God is love. But they seem not to notice that the words God is love have no real meaning unless God contains at least two Persons. Love is something that one person has for another person. If God was a single person, then before the world was made, he was not love. How is this a powerful argument for the Trinity? How does it also fuel what it means for us to be made in God s image? 5. We can love completely without having complete understanding. This is true of relationships with others and it is true of our relationship with God. To affirm the Trinity does not mean we have complete understanding. How is this idea comforting? How does love for God encourage us to want to know more of who he is? God Consecrates Us Consecrate means to make holy, to set apart. The Word of God does that for the lives of believers. Through the sermon, confessions of faith, and the offering we are sanctified for service to our Lord to joyfully offer up our lives to him. - 9 -

God Communes with Us The Lord strengthens and nourishes our faith through a sacramental meal. Through Jesus, communion with God has been reestablished. The covenant has been renewed. The Lord s Supper is the gospel made visible for us and we share in it as the full community of God s people. *JESUS I MY CROSS HAVE TAKEN Jesus, I my cross have taken, all to leave and follow Thee. Destitute, despised, forsaken, Thou from hence my all shall be. Perish every fond ambition, all I ve sought or hoped or known. Yet how rich is my condition! God and heaven are still my own. Let the world despise and leave me, they have left my Savior, too. Human hearts and looks deceive me; Thou art not, like them, untrue. O while Thou dost smile upon me, God of wisdom, love, and might, Foes may hate and friends disown me, show Thy face and all is bright. Go, then, earthly fame and treasure, come disaster, scorn and pain In Thy service, pain is pleasure, with Thy favor, loss is gain I have called Thee Abba Father, I have stayed my heart on Thee Storms may howl, and clouds may gather; all must work for good to me. Haste thee on from grace to glory, armed by faith, and winged by prayer. Heaven s eternal days before thee, God s own hand shall guide us there. Soon shall close thy earthly mission, soon shall pass thy pilgrim days, Hope shall change to glad fruition, faith to sight, and prayer to praise. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

*IN CHRIST ALONE In Christ alone my hope is found, he is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones he came to save; Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied For ev ry sin on him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground his body lay, light of the world by darkness slain; Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave he rose again! And as he stands in victory sin s curse has lost its grip on me, for I am his and he is mine bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the pow r of Christ in me; From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow r of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from his hand. Till he returns or calls me home, here in the pow r of Christ I ll stand. *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service. God Commissions Us Having been richly blessed by the Lord in our worship, we are sent forth as his ambassadors of reconciliation into the world. Our worship of God as his people now extends into our lives throughout the week. We are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to him in all areas of our lives.
