October 16 th, 2011 Meditations Lots of North Americans use the word sin only on dessert menus and when telling an inside joke. If they hear the word used seriously, they might conclude that they are in the presence of a Puritan. There are few contexts left in which the word is said and heard straight. A certain number of churches do have a part of the service in which there is confession of sin and assurance of pardon, but in many churches, even preachers mumble when it comes to sin. Such a downer, they think. How can you keep the customers happy if you talk about depressing topics? Cornelius Plantinga, Not The Way It s Supposed to Be: A Breviary of Sin Readings to help you engage with God and worship, as Jesus said, in spirit and in truth. Shame, boatloads of shame Day after day, more of the same Blame, please lift it off Please take it off, please make it stop The Avett Brothers, Shame When you hear the first song begin, please come take a seat and continue preparing for worship by praying, reading the meditation quotes above, or singing along.

Jesus, Cast a Look On Me Words: John Berridge Music: Matthew Perryman Jones MPJ Music CCLI #: 11107331 Song of Gathering Jesus cast a look on me, Give me sweet simplicity; Make me poor and keep me low, Seeking only Thee to know. All that feeds my busy pride, Cast it evermore aside; Bid my will to Thine submit, Lay me humbly at Thy feet. Make me like a little child, Of my strength and wisdom spoiled; Seeking only in Thy light, Walking only in Thy might. Leaning on Thy loving breast, Where a weary soul can rest; Feeling well the peace of God, Flowing from His precious blood. In this posture let me live, And hosannas daily give; In this temper let me die, And hosannas ever cry! A recognition of the presence of God among us, which influences the posture of our hearts. Revelation 5:11-12; 15:3-4; 1:5-6 Please stand if able. 2 We gather in the presence of God Welcome and Call to Worship Leader: I looked, and I heard around the throne... the voice of many angels numbering thousands upon thousands, saying with a loud voice, People: Worthy is the Lamb Who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! Leader: Righteous and true are Your ways, King of the ages. People: Who will not fear You, O Lord, and bring glory to Your name? Leader: For You alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed. People: To Him Who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood and made us a kingdom of priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever.

Song of Praise Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity. Holy, holy, holy, all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy, though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man, Thy glory may not see. Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow r, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, All thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity. Holy, Holy, Holy Words: Reginald Heber Music: John B. Dykes Public domain Scripture Reading For if, because of one man s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man s obedience the many will be made righteous. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Romans 5:17-19 We confess our sin and receive grace Confession of Sin Lord Jesus Christ, though being in very nature God, when You came to redeem us You humbled Yourself and made Yourself nothing. Though You were rich, for our sakes You became poor, so that through Your poverty we might become rich. We confess how unlike You we are in our attitudes and actions. We strive for recognition from others, and become bitter if we do not get it. We attend to our own needs and concerns, yet fail to care for our bothers and sisters except when it serves our purposes. Forgive us our sin and renew our hearts. Grant us to realize that we only achieve greatness and gain our lives by giving them away. Work in us by the power of your Spirit so that we become more like You and so bring glory to our Father in heaven. Amen. A time to be honest with God about our need for forgiveness. Please read together. 3

Silent Confession Psalm 32:1-3, 5 Assurance of Pardon Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. In Christ Alone Words and music: Keith Getty & Stuart Townend 2002 Thankyou Music Song of Renewal In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song. This Cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid, Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again. And as He stands in victory, Sin s curse has lost it s grip on me, For I am His and He is mine, Brought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me. From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand. Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I ll stand. 4

Our mind, body, and spirit are nourished with food that does not perish. Genesis 3:1-8 Isaiah 40:8 Today s sermon is given by Pastor Matt Lorish. God feeds us with His Word Sermon Text Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. People: Praise be to God! Sermon We encourage you to use this space to take notes or write questions. Sermon discussion is the primary material of study in our Northside Groups. 6

Invitation to the Lord s Supper Words of Institution The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Parents who would like for their nursery-aged children to be present and prayed for during communion meal should pick them up at this time. 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 Leader: Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: People: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. The Lord s Supper When you are ready, please come to one of the communion stations. You will circle the communion station with others in a group of about 6. Gluten-free wafers are located in the wooden boxes; grape juice is available upon request. If you would like, a communion distributor will pray for your children. Partake of the elements at the communion station, and deposit your cup in a basket on your way back to your seat. There is a person at the back of the fellowship hall ready to pray with and for you, if desired. Communion at Northside is a patient, relaxed time. As others take communion please feel free to pray, sing along, or talk quietly with your neighbor. Song of Communion Jesus, the Lord, my Savior is, My Shepherd, and my God. My light, my strength, my joy, my bliss, And I, His grace, record. Yea, all I need, in Jesus dwells, And there, it dwells for me. Tis Christ, my earthen vessel, fills, With treasures rich and free. Mercy and truth and righteousness, And peace, most richly meet, In Jesus Christ, the King of grace, In whom I stand complete. As through the wilderness, I roam, His mercies, I ll proclaim. And when I safely reach my home, I ll still adore His name. Worthy the Lamb, shall be my song, For, He for me was slain. And me, with all the heavenly throng, Shall join, and say, Amen. chorus Jesus, the Lord, my Savior is, My Shepherd, and my God. My light, my strength, my joy, my bliss, And I, His grace, record.
