Making amends to those I ve hurt How many of you have ever been hurt by another person? Have you forgiven them? How many of you have ever hurt another person? Did you ask for forgiveness? Did they forgive you? Did you forgive yourself? It takes a lot of courage to forgive someone - but it takes even more courage to ask for forgiveness! Jesus is crystal clear - if someone hurts you, you go to that person and you tell them that you forgive them, whether they want to hear it or not; you do not wait for them to come to you! Matthew 18:15 - Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. NKJV In the same way, if you hurt someone else, you are to go to that person and ask them to forgive you, whether they do it or not; you do not wait for them to come to you. Matthew 5:23-24: Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you (someone is angry with you), leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother (make peace with that person), and then come and offer your gift. NKJV The offender is to go to his brother and the offended is to go to his brother. If both do what they should, there will be a happy meeting between the two - a collision of love. Jesus recognizes that, even if we have the best of intentions, we often do not control our thoughts or our tongues: James 3:8 no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. NLT When that is the case, what should we do? Jesus said that we should lose no time in making matters right with both God and man - speedy reconciliation. Keep in mind that just because the other person does not do what they should do to bring about reconciliation, does not excuse us. We cannot say, Well, he should have come to me. Jesus said you need to go and do all you can to be reconciled to your brother or sister. After you do that, Jesus said, Then come and present your offering! It is not difficult to apply these words to New Testament practices. When you come to worship and bow your head to ask God for forgiveness of sins, if you remember that a brother or sister has something against you, stop praying. Go and first be reconciled to your brother or sister. Then come back and finish your prayer. Or if you remember you have sinned against a brother or sister, go and be reconciled to that brother or sister. J. W. McGarvey called this a duty which is often totally neglected. Jesus makes it crystal clear that our relationship with our brothers and sisters can affect our relationship with God. How is your relationship with God? Does there seem to be a barrier between you and Him? Perhaps it is because there is a barrier between you and a brother or a sister in Christ, or a family member, or a neighbor, or someone at work or school. If that is the case, it is time to be reconciled. I. How do I make amends First make a list of those you have harmed and what you did. You say, I can t think of anybody. I figured you d say that. So I put a few starters down here. Is there anyone you owe a debt to that you haven t repaid? Have you stolen something from someone? Is there anyone you ve broken a promise to? Is there anyone you have gossiped about? Have you lied to anyone? Have you lied about anyone? Is there anyone you have not appreciated or paid attention to or neglected? Is there anyone you have been unfaithful to? 1

Is there anyone you are guilty of overcontrolling? A spouse? A kid? A brother? An employee? Friend? Have you been verbally abusive to anybody? Physically abusive? Emotionally abusive? Is there anyone you are overly possessive of? Is there anyone you are hypercritical of? Is this enough to get you started, or do I need to go on? You make a list of those you have harmed and what you did. Go to the person you have hurt. To do this correctly, there are three issues you need to look at: 1) Right Time: Ecclesiastes 8:6 - There s a right time and right way to do everything GNT You don t just drop a bomb on somebody. You don t just do it when they re rushing out the door or laying their head down on the pillow, By the way, I ve got some stuff to deal with. You do it according to their time, not when it s best for you but when it s best for them. 2) Right attitude: Philippians 2:3 - Don t be selfish; don t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. NLT You should go to them privately with humility, with sincerity, to simply say that what you did was wrong, to not make any justification for it, no excuses, not talk about their part, just assume responsibility for your part. They may have had a part in the problem. But you re just trying to clear up your side of the ledger! You don t try to justify your actions - you focus only on your part and don t expect anything back from the person you re trying to make amends to. Make restitution where possible. If you ve borrowed something and not returned it, return it. If you owe somebody some money, pay it back. If you have stolen something Remember the tax collector named Zacchaeus? Luke 19:1-6: Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. Zacchaeus! he said. Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today. Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. NLT In Palestine, tax collectors were Jews who worked for the Roman government. They collected taxes from their own people to support the nation that had overrun their country and who kept them in subjection! To become a tax collector, one had to get a concession from the Roman government (often a hefty bribe was involved). The Romans then told him how much he was expected to collect each year; sometimes this had to be paid in advance. He made his profit by charging more than he had to pay the Roman government. Many tax collectors charged as much as they thought they could get away with. It was a system ripe for greed, dishonesty, and corruption. As a result, other Jews considered tax collectors traitors and turncoats, no longer true sons of Abraham. A tax collector could not cast a vote. A tax collector could not testify in court. A tax collector was not allowed to go into the synagogue. The Talmud said that there were three people a Jew could lie to: a thief, a robber, and a tax collector. In the Scriptures, tax collectors are lumped in with other undesirable characters: Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank You that I am not like other men extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. NKJV 2

Zaccheus was not merely a tax collector; he was a chief tax-gatherer or a commissioner of taxes. Apparently, Zaccheus had purchased the tax concession for that entire area. Three tax centers were located in Palestine: Caesarea, Capernaum, and Jericho. Zaccheus may have had the contract for at least one-third of the country. If so, he would have had tax collectors working for him all over that part of Palestine - and he would have gotten a percentage from each of these tax collectors. To the Jews in that region, Zaccheus was the head of the local Mafia, the Jewish Godfather, and he had gotten rich off of the people. He was probably the most hated man in Jericho. So it s no wonder the people were upset when Jesus went to Zaccheus s house: Luke 19:7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner. NLT How would you like to be the most despised man in town - a total outcast? Imagine what this would do to your wife, to your children! Outside Zaccheus house, there was grumbling. Inside the house, conversion was taking place. Luke 19:8 - Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold. NLT The law said that if a thief confessed, he had to repay what he had stolen plus one-fifth (Numbers 5:7; Leviticus 6:5). If he stole $100, he had to repay $120. In certain extreme cases, restoring twofold or fourfold was required, but these did not fit Zacchaeus situation. Zaccheus was not required to repay fourfold, but he was not interested in the bare minimum. He said, in effect, If I have taken $100 from a man, I will give $400 back! Restitution is not necessarily a part of repentance, but sinners who have genuinely repented will want to do what they can do to undo the damage they have done, if possible. Zacchaeus saw how terrible his sin had been and was determined to become a changed man! Zacchaeus attitude is a beautiful demonstration of the attitude we should have when we want to make amends with somebody we hurt. If you want to make amends with someone and do it right, then you must have the same attitude when you approach them as you do when you approach God. Having the right attitude means you have a repentant spirit! What does it mean to truly repent? Repentance is not just being sorry I sinned. 2 Corinthians 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. NIV Sometimes people who claim to be sorry for their sins actually have worldly sorrow they are sorry they got caught or they feel sorry for themselves because they have to suffer the consequences of their actions. This isn t true repentance. Godly sorrow is sorrow which comes into our hearts because we know we have mistreated and offended God - that we have trampled the great heart of God under our feet! To have Godly sorrow means we have a contrite heart a broken heart! To be contrite does not mean feeling bad about sin, but feeling crushed under the weight of guilt for what we have done. It means we have a genuine disgust of our sin as well as a determination to do differently. To be contrite means that we take responsibility for our sins, and that we deeply repent of these sins with a broken heart. That s the same attitude we should have when we go to our brothers or sisters to make amends! 3

A key aspect of repentance is the willingness to make restitution for the past, as far as humanly possible. I use the term as far as humanly possible, because sometimes there is no way we can undo the past. For instance, Peter told the people who had crucified Jesus to repent (Acts 2:38), but there was no way they could undo their terrible deed. In most cases, however, some kind of restitution is possible. If you have wronged someone, make it right. If you owe someone a debt which ought to be paid, pay it. If someone is bitter against you and holding a grudge for something you said (or supposedly said) or did, apologize and ask them for their forgiveness. If there is something you can do to make the situation right or to relieve someone s pain and suffering you caused, you should do what you can! Do everything in your power to settle the matter. However, there are some things you can t restore that you ve taken away from other people. The more serious your offense, the less likely you re going to be able to make any sort of restitution. But don t underestimate the power of a sincere apology. What you do is you go to that person at the right time, with the right attitude and say, I m sorry, I was wrong, I don t deserve your forgiveness, is there any way I can make amends to you? Romans 12:18 - If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. NIV 3) Refocus your life! Refocus your life on doing God s will - starting today. There are three steps to refocusing your life: Put your heart right. Reason with God, confess your sins, forgive those who have hurt you, make amends to those you have hurt, release it and forgive yourself. Joel 2:12-13: That is why the Lord says, Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead. Return to the Lord your God, for He is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish. NLT Job 11:13-16: Put your heart right, Job. Reach out to God. Put away evil and wrong from your home. Then face the world again, firm and courageous. Then all your troubles will fade from your memory, like floods that are past and remembered no more. GNT Forgive yourself. To forgive yourself does not mean that you should forget what you did or said that might have injured another or caused yourself distress. To forgive yourself doesn't mean you aren t responsible for what you did or said. To forgive yourself means you are finally willing to let go of the mistake you ve been holding over your own head. To not forgive yourself means you continue to hold onto pain and guilt! Those who hurt other people often struggle with the thought of forgiveness they wonder how God can forgive their sins, especially over and over again! God does forgive, but this does not mean our sin is without consequences. Sin carries a great burden and the end result is never pleasant. But God does forgive, and When God forgives, He never remembers your sins again so why should you? Psalm 65:3 Though we are overwhelmed by our sins, you forgive them all. NLT 4

Face the world again. You don t withdraw, you don t hide in a shell, you resume living, you start looking ahead. Facing the world again can be difficult for someone who has committed serious sins against another person the church should be loving and forgiving and help them to experience God s love: Galatians 6:1-2: Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. NLT We are not to be judgmental towards people! Regardless of what has happened in a person s life or what a person has done, Jesus loves him and is willing to forgive him we should do the same! 5
