TOGETHER IN SCRIPTURE John Chapter 13 Context: Setting the Table After introducing the witnesses to Jesus in chapter one, John recorded the public ministry of Jesus in chapters two through eleven, focusing in particular on his first six signs, each of which called for belief. Chapter twelve summarizes Christ s public ministry and marks the coming of his long-awaited hour. Beginning with this thirteenth chapter and continuing through his prayer in chapter seventeen, Jesus will focus on preparing his disciples for his soon-coming crucifixion. Content: Hearing the Text Read John 13 together out loud. Credo: Believing the Truth Jesus knew who he was God of God, fully equal with the Father. He knew that his hour had come. He knew the betrayal he was about to endure. He knew the cup he was about to drink. And yet, as he approached the end, Jesus was focused, not on himself, but on his disciples. They needed to be prepared for his departure. They needed to be taught how to serve one another. They needed to be commanded to love one another. In short, they needed to be able to show the world the difference that being a disciple of Jesus was intended to make. His disciples today need no less. Conduct: Reshaping Our Walk Discuss the meaning of the text and then walk through the following application questions as you discuss the difference this meaning ought to make in our lives today. In what areas of our life are we tempted to consider ourselves blessed because of things that we know but don t actually put into practice? EXAMPLES: Knowing how to witness, knowing how to serve others etc. What are some of the ways in which our love for other believers can be motivated more by shared preferences than a shared Savior? EXAMPLES: Always showing our love to those believers we have other reasons to like while excluding those that we find difficult.
