FATHER DON S REFLECTION MK 14:12-16, 22-26 While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, Take it, this is my body. Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Today, we celebrate the Body and Blood of Christ. We hear the words of institution from the Gospel of Mark. We are called to remember what took place at the Last Supper. We are also called to gather as a community to bless the bread and the wine. We ask God to bless these gifts so that they become the Body and Blood of Christ. What an awesome gift God gives us each time we gather! Do we realize what a gift it is that we have the honor of receiving Jesus at every Mass? Do we truly believe in it? We are called to the altar to receive a gift we are so unworthy to receive. We can never earn an invitation to the table - it is a pure gift. We are called to accept it willingly, then share that gift with others in our daily lives. When I am offering the body of Christ, it is often hard to see the excitement in those who are coming forward. Sometimes the person is busy chewing a piece of gum. Other times, when I say, Body of Christ, it can be a long time before I hear the proper response: Amen. When given the Body or Blood of Christ, we should proclaim our response, not just nod our heads or worse, say nothing. This should be a time when we receive the Body of Christ, not take the Body of Christ. If we are really prepared to receive the Eucharist, we should take a more reverent approach to it. Our Amen should be a firm and strong response, indicating that we are proud to receive this gift. I have said more than once that the Eucharist is so accessible to us that maybe we take it for granted. Jesus died for each of us and left us a gift to remind us of that. The Eucharist should never be taken for granted. It is the source and the summit of our Church life. While the Eucharist gives us food for the journey, it goes deeper than that. We are called to become more of what we receive. We are called to be Christ for one another. When we say Amen, we have accepted Jesus into our lives. That has to make a difference. If it does not make a difference, then perhaps we need to take a step back and reflect on the gift. Mass must be more than a Sunday obligation. The Eucharist has the power to bring us ever closer to Jesus and the kingdom of the Father. I try never to miss an opportunity to talk about the Eucharist; it is the center of our faith. Don t take it for granted; it is far too important for our salvation. We are called by name to be what we receive: the body of Christ. Have a great week! WELCOME PARISH THEME I Have Called You By Name; You Are Mine WE WANT YOU TO KNOW No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church, no matter what your current family or marital situation, no matter what your past or present religious affiliation, no matter what your personal history, age, background, race, or color you are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. PRESIDER SCHEDULE June 9 / 10 SATURDAY 5:00 p.m...fr. Don West SUNDAY 8:00 a.m... Fr. Don West 9:30 a.m...fr. Don West 11:30 a.m... Fr. Bob Goebel Please note that this schedule is subject to change. Want more? Visit our website at www.stjohnwc.org, Like our Facebook page: St. John the Evangelist West Chester & Follow us on Twitter @stjohnwc Pastoral Council Election Process Changing Where did the Pastoral Council elections go? Good question to ask. We have started the process to pare down the number of members of Council, beginning with the 2018-2019 year. We are moving from 15 members to 12 members. With the people who are currently on council, we will already have enough members for this next year. So, we will not be holding a 2018 election. In 2019, when we need to add more members to council, we will be using a discernment process for those new additions. While there will still be a time to nominate people (or yourself) to serve on council, there will be no actual election. Instead, there will be a night of prayer and discernment to allow the spirit to help choose who should serve on the council. Instead of voting, we will have a selection process for those who have prayerfully discerned themselves as ready to serve. New members will still serve for a three-year term, and we will choose four members each year, keeping the total to twelve. Many parishes in the archdiocese are using this updated process and it is working very well. We will have more details early next year describing the discernment and timing for the 2019-20 year. May we all trust in the Holy Spirit to guide our parish community! Fr. Don West, Pastor Baptism Sacristans Needed Would you like to be a special part of celebrating our parish baptisms? We need another Baptism Sacristan for the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass, which occurs just once a quarter. We also need another Baptism Sacristan to help at the 1:00 p.m. Sunday baptisms outside of Mass, serving about once a month. Jerry will provide you with training, plus give you a chance to shadow a Baptism Sacristan serving at a baptism before you are placed in the schedule. If you end up with a schedule conflict, you can trade places with another Sacristan. Please pray about it. If you believe you are called to serve in this important ministry, please contact Deacon Jerry Barney at 777-6433, or jbarney@stjohnwc.org. Church Tour Guide Needed Would you like to volunteer giving guided tours of our church for parishioners? It is done 4 times a year by 2 volunteers. The volunteers take turns presenting the tour so that each is only giving it twice a year. The tours last but 45 minutes and are given on either a Saturday morning or a Sunday afternoon. Training will be provided and you can shadow one of our Tour Guides to see firsthand how it is done before being scheduled to serve. If interested, please contact Jerry Barney at jbarney@stjohnwc.org or 777-6433, x 121. 4

I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. Ultimate Gift To And From God Rita Abbas, Liturgical Ministry 40 years ago, St. John was growing and a call went out for lay ministers. Father explained the acute need for people to serve. After consideration and prayer I decided, yes, that would be a wonderful way to give thanks for all God bestows upon us. 40 years later, I am still being blessed and serving in the lay ministries. Mass becomes much more meaningful. You are not just sitting there listening to God s words and receiving His Body and Blood, you are helping God serve his people. Every time I participate in the ministries I feel the warmth, love, & joy of giving and receiving the Ultimate Gift to and from God How have you been called by God? Have an answer? Send it to Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org. Catholic Charities Mental Health Services We all have stress and challenges. We all can use a little help from time to time.
