Hope, Healing and The Reality Of It All What do we hope for in life, in healing and dealing with toxic people in our lives?

Musings from the Pastor In our Wednesday morning Bible study, we have been looking at Daniel of (Daniel and the Lion s Den) a lot recently and several times he was told by an angel, you are highly esteemed. Wow, highly esteemed. Daniel must have been doing something right to be called such an honorable name by an angel. I think it would have to be a name God would approve of. I wonder wouldn t it be something to be called, one who is highly esteemed by God. John Grenfell Jr. died just the other day. I didn t know John well, but one of my first meetings with him said to me, here is a man of God. That meeting took place on a softball field. He was playing first base and I was playing second. I was in my 20 s and he was in his 50 s. It had been a long time since I threw any kind of ball around, let alone a softball. So when I would throw to him, sometime my throw could be a little errant, well, maybe a little more than that. So when we got to the field and were throwing around before the inning started, John would put his softball mitt up against his chest and say in his commanding voice, Hit me in the chest, Paul! Hit me in the chest! I eventually became more consistent in hitting John in the chest on my throws, but that is not what impressed me about him. I was a 20 something year old, just getting into a deeper relationship with the Lord. John was the pastor of a United Methodist church whose average attendance was upwards of 500 hundred people and membership of over 1100, but he remembered this nobody s name. We only played in several games together over the course of a couple of weeks, but once I became a pastor, I began to run into him a couple of times a year. After re-introducing myself to him, he remembered my name from then until the last time we met a year or so ago. As I said, I didn t know him well, but what I did know could have qualified him as someone who was highly esteemed. Remembering someone s name and using their name is really important. When at a restaurant, your waiter/waitress or the person behind the counter is someone who has a name and a life. Even in the four or five times you speak, you can make an impression on them that they are important simply by using their name in a positive tone, because for many they are only known as, hey you! In the same manner, God knows your name! Whenever you speak to God, God is listening to your voice, God is listening to you. You are not just a part rolling off an assembly line with no real distinction from the other parts on the line. You are an important person God knows by name. You are a person Jesus died for that you might live a holy life. You are a person the Holy Spirit resides in when you believe in Jesus. You are important to God. So enjoy this month of July knowing you are loved, knowing God calls you by name. Continue to work with God to become a highly esteemed child of God. Blessings on our journey together Pastor Paul 2

Church Envelopes It has been brought to our attention that there is some confusion about the two different envelopes that are in the pew holders. The white envelope is for donations made to HUMC. You can write on the envelope where you would like the money to be used within the church. The brown Love Envelope is for donations used for ministries like Love Inc., Gas Card ministry, and financial assistance to those in need. Remember to put your envelope number on these envelopes as well. Most importantly, please use your individual church envelopes that have your number printed on it. This is the best way to insure that your giving is credited on your church giving statements. You are Invited! Pastor Fred Finzer and his wife Lois will be in Michigan in late July. There will be an open house at the home of Revs. Doug and Marianne Mc Munn on July 29 from 1-3 p.m. where you can visit with Fred and Lois. All are invited. The address is 350 Cabinet Street, Milford, MI 48381. Snacks will be served. July 23 11:00 a.m. Christmas in July Craft Show Crafters for Christ is a new group of ladies and men who enjoy making crafts. We meet at the Harton s House the third Wednesday of the month at 1:00p.m. On Sunday, July 23, after the morning worship service there will be a mini craft show featuring some of the created items. The profits generated from the sale of these items are used for ministries and needs of the church. For instance, the shampooing of the carpets was paid by this fund. All people and crafting ideas are welcomed. 5

Special Easy Invites This Summer This summer presents many opportunities to invite a friend, family member or anyone that you meet to join with HUMC in service and fellowship. Keep in mind these special events, along with the Summer Sermon Series to ignite a conversation and to invite a guest. About 80% of all people will come to church, only if invited by a friend. Be a friend this summer and ask someone to an event. Rally Sunday September 10, 2017 Concert Performance by Rev. Mark Spaw Brian & Judy 6
