The initial probe has revealed that it could have been sparked by a short circuit and spread because of the combustible roof. In effect, fire safety norms had been violated. In T. Nagar, things are equally bad. Most of the high-rise buildings do not have fire safety mechanisms in place. After the Chennai Silks fire incident in Usman Road, the Fire and Rescue Department conducted a survey and reported that most of the commercial complexes in the neighbourhood had violated fire safety norms. While the fire department does not have the power to punish, those who have Sir, This is with reference to the report regarding the withdrawal of hike in the price of LPG. It was stated that the order to revise the LPG price by Rs. 4 every month to offset the subsidy burden was withdrawn in October 2017 as it was seen to contrast with the government s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for providing free gas connections. Following the withdrawal of the order, it was reported that the oil companies have not revised the LPG prices with effect from October 2017. In the same report, it was stated that the there has been increase in the price of the subsidized LPG even after October due to Post GST, subsidized LPG is dearer the power, unfortunately, do not take action. The result is that members of the public are at great risk while stepping into these complexes. Not long ago, while hearing a writ petition on lack of fire safety in buildings, the Madras High Court directed the Fire Department to put up caution notices in buildings violating norms. This has not been followed diligently and such notices have been displayed only in a couple of buildings. The onus now rests only on the shoppers. Should they patronize shopping areas that are unsafe, overcrowded and offer no escape routes in case of fire? It is a point worth pondering. K. Harihar, T. Nagar. taxation issues and this came to the fore following the implementation of the direct benefit transfer scheme (DBT) where the consumers get the subsidy amount directly in their bank account. Before DBT, VAT was charged on the subsidized price, and post DBT, GST is charged on the open market price which is much higher than the subsidized price. So, even after the withdrawal of the price hike of Rs. 4 a month, there has been no respite to the consumers from the price hike due to the additional tax levy. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Appeal to reopen temple in Postal Colony 3 rd Street Sir, Sri Vadamadura Kannan Temple located in Postal Colony 3 rd Street, West Mambalam is under the administrative control of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (Govt. of Tamilnadu). It has remained closed for more than 20 years. In spite of repeated appeals and reminders to the HR & CE Dept. from devotees and other stakeholders in the neighbourhood, the authorities have not taken any steps to reopen the temple. So, I appeal to the HR & CE officials to reconsider the appeals of the devotees to reopen the temple and make arrangements for regular poojas. RM Devanatha Desikan (Honorary Secretary, Sri Vadamadura Kannan Bakthajana Sabha, West Mambalam) Man, in-laws held for killing wife s paramour On Jan. 3, Murali (31) (resident of Ashok Nagar) surrendered in Guindy police station with his mother-in-law and brother-in-law after grievously injuring his wife Shobhana (28) and her paramour Vishvanathan (35) in a park in Nandambakkam. When police rushed to the spot, they found Vishvanathan dead and Shobana grievously injured. Shobhana was rushed to Chromepet Govt. Hospital. According to the police, Vishvanathan and Shobhana were childhood friends. Shobhana was married to Murali who is an autorickshaw driver. In his confession, Murali told the police that in the past few weeks, he had grown suspicious of his wife s behavior after he found that she had been frequently making long calls and sending messages to an unknown number. She had also started going on morning walks and returning home late which too added to the suspicion. When he confronted her, she gave vague replies and denied any wrongdoing. Rangoli contest in Thirumangalam metro station today MOHAN Foundation is organizing a rangoli competition in association with Chennai Metro Rail Limited on Saturday, Jan. 6, in Thirumangalam metro station from 3 p.m to 6 p.m. The theme of the competition is organ donation. The contest is open to individuals and a maximum of two persons as a team. The registration fee is Rs. 200 per participant/team. Participants should bring their own materials for making the rangoli. Flowers/grass/non-edible natural materials Murali conveyed his suspicion to his motherin-law Vasantha and brother-in-law Kannan who, in turn, warned Shobana who apparently paid no heed. On Jan. 3, when Shobana left for her morning walk, Murali along with Vasantha and Kannan, followed her in his autorickshaw. They spotted Shobana getting on Vishvanathan s bike and followed the pair to a park in Nandambakkam. Seeing them at close quarters infuriated Murali, and before they could react, he picked up a log lying nearby and attacked them savagely. Vasantha and Kannan also joined in the attack leaving Vishvanathan and Shobana with severe injuries. They assailants then went to Guindy police station and confessed to the attack. Vishvanathan, police said, was a divorcee who lived with his mother in Ashok Nagar. He worked in a private company in Meenabakkam. Police arrested Murali, Vasantha and Kannan for murder. A court remanded them to judicial custody. /colour powder can be used. Paint is not allowed. According to the organizers, the judging will be based on overall appearance and appeal, originality of the concept, details and clarity on the theme of organ donation and colour combination and creativity. Prizes will be awarded to the best three rangolis.
