Beauty of Holiness: Talk by Charles Saumarez- Smith CBE Friday 22 February 19:00 20:15, South Transept Currently Senior Director of Blain Southern and former Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts, cultural historian Sir Charles Saumarez Smith will be joining us this month to discuss art in sacred places. Charles specialises in the history of art, design and architecture and has been a judge for many notable awards such as the Stirling Prize for Architecture and the BP Portrait Award. In this talk, he will examine examples of artwork that has been produced over the last thirty years and displayed in churches and cathedrals. These include pieces by the likes of Bill Viola, Stephen Cox and Alison Watt. Charles will also talk about a number of recent architectural works including the Queen s Diamond Jubilee Gallery in Westminster Abbey and the Bishop Edward King Chapel at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. Tickets for this talk are 10 and available from our website. All proceeds will go towards the Cathedral s Art Fund. For more information about these events, and to get your ticket to Heritage and Craft Skills at the Cathedral: from the Dark Ages to the Present, please contact the Development Team on devadmin@salcath.co.uk or 01722 555122. Heritage and Craft Skills at the Cathedral: From the Dark Ages to the Present Thursday 28th February 19:00 20:30, Nave During this evening, we will be shedding light on the history of some of the Cathedral s craftsmanship that has helped to make it as impressive as it is today. We will be joined by guest speaker Alex Langlands, known for presenting BBC s Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm and Wartime Farm. Alex s talk is entitled Salisbury in the Dark Ages: The Archaeology and History of the Salisbury Region in the Early Medieval Period. Through the talk, he will demonstrate that contrary to popular belief, Salisbury in the years just before the Cathedral was built were anything but a Dark Age. Instead, he argues, it was in fact an area of vibrant activity where the craft skills we see today began to thrive and develop. Our Glazing Manager, Sam Kelly, will also be giving a talk. You will be able to learn more about how our stained glass windows are conserved as well as getting an update from him on the Cathedral s extensive repair and restoration work. The Cathedral s Archivist Emily Naish will be showcasing some fascinating items from our archives and refreshments will be available. Booking for this free event is essential. A retiring collection will be taken for the repair and conservation of the Cathedral fabric. RSVP by Thursday 22 February. 6 February 2019

February February Services Services and and Music Music Pulling Out The Stops! Discover the rich history of one of the finest cathedral organs in the world North Transept February - November 2019 After almost 150 years of being played every day our famous Father Willis pipe organ needs to be restored. During its repair an exhibition made up of interactive panels will tell its story from installation in 1877 to present day. Why not play your part in saving our organ by making a donation? Visit the exhibition or our website for details. salisburycathedral.org.uk February February 2019 20197 7

Organ Restoration By the time you read this article, the dismantling of our famous Father Willis Organ will have begun. Scaffolding has been erected in the Quire and in the side aisles so that pipes big and small can be lowered to ground level, before being packed and transported to the Harrison & Harrison workshop in Durham. The scaffolding will be removed later this month, before being reinstated towards the end of the year so that the pipes may also be reinstated. The scaffolding has rather altered the way in which we use the building. Evensong has taken place nearer the high altar, and also occasionally in the Trinity Chapel. Our Sunday Eucharists have been moved entirely into the nave, and this has allowed us to make good use of our wonderful Blüthner grand piano. The lack of a big pipe organ has also facilitated imagination with our liturgical and musical offerings. A particular highlight in January was the Epiphany Devotion, which featured highly-accomplished period instrumentalists and the Cathedral Choir in a performance of parts five and six of Bach s Christmas Oratorio, as well as a superb solo aria from our Dean s Chorister, Annenora. By the end of February we will be able to use the Quire once again, but this time we will be using an Allen digital organ to accompany much of our worship. This will be used until the Father Willis Organ is back in action in early 2020. Follow the Cathedral s social media to see lots of pictures and videos of this restoration work. With almost 4,000 pipes to be cleaned and restored, the organ builders have their work cut out! John Challenger ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF MUSIC 8 February 2019
