PERSONAL WORD SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2015 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary First Sunday of Lent The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM. SERMON Dr. Andrew Wolfe Sermon Series: Soul Keeping MUSIC 8:45 AM Sanctuary Choir, Trinity Orchestra, Choralier & Crusader Choirs 11:00 AM Praise Alliance, Trinity Orchestra MINISTER ON CALL Bobby Scales, 746-4547 It s Lent again. A real downer for some folks. That s why some places celebrate Mardi Gras a week of full-blown partying and all out fun, before you have to bear down, give it all up. Smiles give way to sober looks and frowns! Happiness and Lent are not two words we use together. But that is to take the short term view. The truth is that life is a series of loss and gains, ups and downs, joy and sorrows, successes and failures, detours and interruptions that sometimes leave us in a stupor, a hangover. Lent is not about what we give up but about what we gain, by taking time to pay attention to our lives, and care for our souls. Someone has written that Lent is a time to regain some of the lost ground we lose in the rush of our lives. In the therapeutic language of our times, someone else put it this way, Lent is God s own psychic health spa a 40-day free trip to concentrated spiritual wellness. Lent is God s quiet time for all his hyper-active, self-involved children. The price of admission? Repent! The Greek word for repentance is metanioa as in metamorphous a turn about, a transformation. We not only turn away, but repentance is about throwing out the guilt and the shame, the pride and the anger...making room for peace and humility, forgiveness to come flooding in. It is about soul keeping and healing. It is about turning to God so that the real repair work for our souls can begin. Lent is: 40 days of possibility. The possibility of knowing ourselves and our God a little better 40 days of examining priorities, finding time and space for God s love in our lives 40 days of recovering mental, spiritual and physical health 40 days of honesty. Confronting ourselves in the clear light of God s forgiveness to purge, repent and rebuild 40 days of sharing our growing strength and comfort with those we love and those who need our love 8:45 & 11:00 AM WESLEY HALL, Rev. Launching of the SonShine Ministry Trinity announces a new ministry that focuses on serving our children with special needs. SonShine Ministry has three goals: to welcome every child with the radical love of God, to support families that have a child with special needs so that they may continue to grow in the love and knowledge of God, and to enrich the lives of volunteers as they serve the children with special needs in our community. We are in ministry with kids during both the 10 am Sunday School hour and 11 am worship hour. In addition to assisting children in their Sunday School classroom, a new space, the SonShine Room is now available as an alternative space for the children during the 11 am services. It is located near the 2nd floor commons in Room 229. We are welcoming participants from interested families now! If you are interested in serving on the SonShine Ministry team, please contact Eleanor Christiansen or Jeanne Baswell at 879-1737 for more information.
