Gathering Gathering Music Just As I Am (arr. Aaron David Miller) Welcome and Announcements
*Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen. We confess our sins before God and one another. Pause for silence and reflection. Generous God, You have blessed us with riches overflowing. And yet we waste what we are given. We hoard what we have. And we long for what we don t have. We dishonor your gift when we deny those who are in need. We bankrupt our own souls with greed. Forgive our blindness. Make our hearts clean again. Amen. A contrite heart is what God desires. A spirit humbled and opened to the service of others. Receive the redeeming mercy of Christ and believe in the promise. You are forgiven. You are made whole again. In the name of Jesus. Amen. *Gathering Song #764: Have No Fear, Little Flock (requested by Larry/Carolyn Hennerberg) *Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *Prayer of the Day O God, you have shown us the way to fulfillment. Train our hearts in your healing way and rid them of their addiction to that which doesn t truly nourish. We ask this for the sake of your Son, who gave up everything for our sake. Amen. 2

*Gospel Luke 12:13-34 The holy gospel according to Luke, the 12th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me. 14 But he said to him, Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you? 15 And he said to them, Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. 16 Then he told them a parable: The land of a rich man produced abundantly. 17 And he thought to himself, What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops? 18 Then he said, I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. 20 But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be? 21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God. 22 He said to his disciples, Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? 26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you you of little faith! 29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep 4
worrying. 30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. 32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Children s Sermon Sermon Hymn of the Day #555: Oh, Sing to God Above *Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 5
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Prayers of Intercession The Assembly responds, Hear our prayer. *Sharing of the Peace Meal Offering Be Thou My Vision (arr. Joseph M. Martin) *Offertory Response #486: God Extends an Invitation God extends an invitation to the table of creation, where there's wine and light and bread. Here we gather in thanksgiving and we offer all our living. Here the feast of life is spread; here the feast of life is spread. Text: Miria T. Kolling; Spanish and English tr. Gerhard M. Cartford, b. 1923 Spanish and English text 1998 Augsburg Fortress. 6
*Offertory Prayer It is in giving that we receive. Accept and bless these gifts, O God, which come from our plenty, for the benefit of all your children. Use us as your instruments of peace and love in the world, that all may know your goodness. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving and Preface The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 7
*Holy, Holy, Holy 8

*Sending Music Blessed Jesu, At Thy Word (J. S. Bach) About #555: Oh, Sing to God Above: The text and music for this hymn are by Carlos Rosas. He was born in Mexico (1939), attended the preparatory Seminario Arquidiocesanon de Monterrey from his 12 th to 19 th years and then held a number of different jobs including that of bellboy at a hotel in Monterrey. There he met his wife, Maria Teresa De Leon, whom he married in 1965. He became a U.S. citizen 3 years later, worked as an insurance agent, began attending San Antonio College in his wife s home town, and started a choir at San Juan de Los Lagos Catholic Church beginning with 5 people who grew to 70 and a mariachi band. A workshop leader, lecturer, writer, and composer, he thinks music should be used at the service of the Kingdom of God. It should awaken people to fight for the Kingdom instead of sleeping while injustices are being committed. Prayers and psalm 2016 Sundays and Seasons. Printed by permission, OneLicense.net #A-705200.
