I ve been spending more and more time thinking about Adult Education here at LCOF. First, we are incredibly blessed to have Paul Adams in our midst, who is a capable and willing teacher. Paul leads our congregation s weekly Bible Study on Thursday mornings at 11:00 (where we discuss the texts for the upcoming Sunday, which means that even if you can only come every once in a while, you won t be lost or confused because it s a new topic each week). Paul has also been teaching our 9:45 Sunday School class for the last several weeks. This is such a great gift for us all! Paul s turn to teach Sunday School is winding down, which means now it s my turn, which means I need to come up with something for us to focus on. I ve spent a lot of time thinking about what sort of things might be fun to discuss during our Sunday School time together. And I came up with a few solid options, but then it occurred to me: why should I be the one deciding what you want to learn/think/talk about? Why not let you decide? And so, what I d like to do for our Sunday School time is to focus on what I like to call Burning Questions. These are questions that we all carry inside of us, questions that are ablaze within us, questions that we think about and wrestle with, but maybe don t have good answers for. Or maybe we feel like we should know the answer, but we don t, and so that makes us feel insufficient. Or maybe we ve always wondered about the answer, but we ve been too embarrassed to ask it. These might be questions like Why do bad things happen to good people? or Is Hell real? or What do we mean when we say Communion is Christ s body and blood? or whatever else is burning in your heart. Continued.
Pastor s Page continued P a ge 2 What I want is to hear what your burning questions are. So, on the God s Work, Our Hands Table you will find slips of paper to write them down on and a box to put them in. I m asking that people also put their name on the paper (Don t worry, I won t share who asked which question, because I don t want anyone to feel self-conscience; but attaching your name to your question allows me to know who asked it, so that I can be sure that they are able to be present on the day we discuss their question). I ll go through the questions and pick a few for us to discuss each week in Sunday School, beginning on December 3 rd. Please note: I ve said that we will gather and discuss the questions. I have made no promises about answering them. A lot of the questions that we wrestle with are hard, and they don t necessarily have a bumper-sticker answer. That s ok. It s still good to discuss them, to think about them together, and respond to them. We can still learn a lot, even if we walk away more confused than we started! Until we get enough questions to get started with our Burning Questions Sunday School Discussion, here s the plan for Sunday morning education: November 5 th A final lesson on Martin Luther with Paul Adams November 12 th and 19 th Year Round: Exploring the Liturgical Seasons with Pastor Jesse (a look at the makeup of the church year, what s cool about it, and why it matters) November 26 th No Sunday School (Thanksgiving Weekend) December 3 rd We begin our Burning Questions discussion I m really excited to see what questions the Holy Spirit has placed on your hearts and to gather and wrestle with them together! God s Peace, Pastor Jesse Sunshine Club The Sunshine Club Christmas Lunch at Grandover will be December 5th. We will meet at 11:45 at Grandover. It is open to all adults. From the Food Pantry P a ge 5 Fall is here!! In past years, using Thrivent funds, we have been able to supply special holiday bags to our clients for each Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have received the most wonderful blessing in that we again have 2 Thrivent cards in the amount of $250.00 each, one for each holiday, and will start distributing the first week of November. Bags are made in 2 sizes-a smaller one for 1-2 people (cost of about $9.00) and a larger one for families (cost about $13.00). A sample bag will soon be appearing on the blue table. Last year we gave out nearly 40 bags. So, doing the math you can see that will still come up short and could use some help, especially with small canned hams ($2.99 at Aldi), cake mixes and tubs of frosting. Whatever you can help with will be much appreciated and will help stretch our dollars. We are now accepting goods for the Christmas Boutique opening the first week of December. Gently used gift items, Christmas things, things kids would like (stuffed toys are loved) and jewelry is always popular. Again, we ladies of the Food Pantry thank you. None of this could or would happen without you! Puppet Pals COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS Thanksgiving is a day that is set aside each year to give thanks for our many blessings. Gabby and Nora learn that they should count their blessings every day of the year. Come see this special Thanksgiving puppet play during the children's sermon on November 19. Church Messages Our church uses Phonevite to provide mass communications to everyone in our church. We broadcast important messages regarding reminders of upcoming church events, deaths or illnesses of church members, alerts that cancel services in case of bad weather, or other notifications. The people on the Phonevite list receive a phone call along with a follow up email to make sure they get the messages. The call will appear with the church number 336-299-0235. Each phone call does have a cost to the church even if you pick up and do not let the call complete the message. If you do not not want to receive these calls, please call the church office and let us know you wish to be removed from the list. Thank you!
