PRELUDE Blessed Assurance/No Other Name arr. Carol Tornquist Dorann Bartels WELCOME INSTALLATION OF TEACHERS (All Sunday, Mid-Week, Confirmation and Pre-School Teachers please come forward at this time) P: The following leaders have been called to teach and disciple in our congregation this year. We give thanks and seek God s blessing on those who have lovingly presented themselves for the teaching ministry of our congregation. In the words of the Great Commission, Jesus compels us to go and teach. Do you hear the Word of God and do you embrace the joy-filled privilege of nurturing Christian growth in those you teach? The teachers: I embrace this privilege and ask God to help and guide me. P: And will you, the congregation, pray for our faithful teachers and give them your support? C: Yes! And we ask God to help and guide us. P: Let us pray. 2

Gracious God, we come to you with thanksgiving for your son, Jesus Christ, sent among us to show us the way to love the world. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon all those who teach and learn that we may be filled with a desire to GROW as disciples and GO forth as bold witnesses to your love and grace. In Jesus name we pray. C: Amen Please stand CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Gracious God, C: have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen 3

P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. C: Amen GATHERING HYMN Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing ELW #886 Text: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788, alt. Music: Carl G. Glaser,1784-1829; arr. Lowell Mason, 1792-1872 Text and Music Public Domain 4

GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. KYRIE PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray, God of all peoples, your arms reach out to embrace all those who call upon you. Teach us as disciples of your Son to love the world with compassion and constancy, that your name may be known throughout the earth, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen 5

WORD A Reading from Isaiah L: 1 Thus says the LORD: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. 6 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant 7 these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. 8 Thus says the Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered. (Isaiah 56:1, 6-8) L: Word of God. Word of Life. C: Thanks be to God. 6

Please stand for the Gospel Acclamation P: A Reading from St. Matthew C: Glory to you, O Lord P: 10 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, "Listen and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles." 12 Then the disciples approached and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?" 13 He answered, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit." 15 But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us." 16 Then he said, "Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. 19 For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person, but to eat with 7

unwashed hands does not defile." 21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon." 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us." 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." 26 He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." 27 She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly. (Matthew 15:10-28) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you O Christ. APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P: Generous, compassionate God, we gather before you to pray for the church, the world, and all in need. (At the conclusion of each prayer) L: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Into your hands we place all our prayers, spoken and unspoken, trusting in the mercy of Christ Jesus. C: Amen. 10

EXCHANGE OF PEACE P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. We greet one another in the name of the Lord using words such as, Peace be with you. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE: P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, we praise your name and join the unending hymn: SANCTUS 13

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With this bread and cup we remember our Lord s passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: O God of resurrection and new life: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and wine. Bless this feast. Grace our table with your presence. C: Come, Holy Spirit. 14

P: Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread. Raise us up as the body of Christ for the world. Breathe new life into us. Send us forth, burning with justice, peace, and love. C: Come, Holy Spirit. P: With your holy ones of all times and places, with the earth and all its creatures, with sun and moon and stars, we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. C: Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen 15

INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Everyone is invited and encouraged to come and share in this gift of love. Please let the Communion Assistant know if you want grape juice or a glutenfree wafer.
