Hosanna, Loud Hosanna Scripture Matthew 27:27-31 Then the governor s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. Hail, king of the Jews! they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. The Word of the Lord: Th an k s b e to Go d! Hosanna, loud hosanna, The little children sang; Through pillared court and temple The lovely anthem rang; To Jesus, who had blessed them Close folded to His breast, The children sang their praises, The simplest and the best. From Olivet they followed Mid an exultant crowd, The victor palm branch waving And chanting clear and loud; The Lord of earth and heaven Rode on in lowly state, Nor scorned that little children Should on His bidding wait. Hosanna in the highest! That ancient song we sing. For Christ is our Redeemer, The Lord of heaven, our King; O may we ever praise Him With heart and life and voice, And in His blissful presence Eternally rejoice! Chorus In the cross, in the cross Be my glory ever, Till my raptured soul shall find Rest beyond the river. Near the cross, a trembling soul, Love and mercy found me; There the Bright and Morning Star Sheds its beams around me. Near the cross! O Lamb of God, Bring its scenes before me; Help me walk from day to day With its shadows o'er me. Near the cross I'll watch and wait, Hoping, trusting ever, Till I reach the golden strand, Just beyond the river. The Service of Diminishing Light Sixth Sunday in Lent Palm Sunday R ead er 1: Let us pray: P eo p le: Holy God, as we mark the days before Jesus resurrection, help us to recall the path he walked to his crucifixion and death. Send your Spirit to guide our hearts in devotion and prayer. Amen. R ead er 1: During Lent, we have been remembering the events that led up to the crucifixion. Jesus had come to bring hope and light to the world, but at every step there were those who struggled with the consequences of that light. He came as a friend of sinners and many knew him, but even those who were close to him would often fail to be faithful. When he would depend on them the most they rejected him. R ead er 2: When Jesus and the disciples were at supper in the upper room, a discussion arose among the disciples about who was the most faithful disciple. Peter claimed that esteemed honor. But Jesus told them that the cup from which he was about to drink was too bitter for any of them to accept. R ead er 3: One by one, each would forsake him. Peter said, I will not forsake you, Lord. I will follow you to the ends of the earth and suffer what you suffer. Jesus replied to him, Yes, Peter, you will suffer what I suffer and more, but before the cock crows this morning, three times will you betray me. R ead er 4: After Jesus was arrested, Peter followed the crowd and warmed himself by a fire while Jesus was being questioned. As he sat there, a a serving maid from the house saw him and said, Aren t you one of of his disciples? Peter said, No, I I am not. Another heard him answer and said, You are a a Galilean. Surely you are one of of his followers. Again Peter said that he did not know Jesus. R ead er er 2: 2: A little while later, still another man came up to to the fire and said, Didn t I I see you with this Jesus when he was teaching? With anger in in his voice, Peter said, I I told you I I never knew this man! In the distance, a a cock crowed. Peter glanced up and saw Jesus looking at at him through the doorway. Peter turned away and ran from the courtyard, with tears streaming down his cheeks. R ead er er 1: 1: Even those who loved him most were unable to support him in in his darkest hour. When they could have been there, they went into hiding, allowing Jesus to to suffer and die alone. And as as his friends abandoned him into the hands of of his enemies, even more of of the light that had come into the world went out. Extinguish all all the candles. Congregational Introit: W hhen en Jesu s s Sp eak ss Sung to to the tune Lamb of of God, #302 When Jesus speaks, His love calls forth. I I give my heart to to nothing else! For when He calls me come to to serve, Our Savior calls me to to Himself. Let us us pray together: Blessed Jesus, we give thanks for your joys and your sufferings on the journey to to the cross. Thank you, O Christ, for your obedience and strength to to do God s will. We pray this in in your holy name. Amen.
