We have followed the process used in the past, and have tried to honor specific requests. As you know, there are not enough Sundays to visit every church in the Diocese each year, so some churches are not on this list. As has been the tradition, if a Renewal of Ministry (formerly called Celebration of New Ministry ), or another special occasion is in the near future, we have usually not scheduled a regular Sunday visit. If you are not scheduled, and would like to make plans for a time other than Sunday morning, please contact Laura and we ll make every effort to arrange an alternative visitation time. As has also been encouraged in the past, I encourage you to send parishioners to a nearby church if the confirmation schedule presents difficulties. This reinforces the fact that we as the Diocese of East Tennessee are one Church, and besides, it can be fun. Please remember the following expectations about Sunday visitations, and My preference is if your building will hold everyone to have the ENTIRE PARISH attend one service, and make it special. Several parishes have done that this year, and it's a great thing! If that won t work, let s talk about it; Please be sure and make your yearly appointment at least two weeks before the visitation. If you have assisting clergy, please remind them of this as well; Prior to the visit, you will receive a Visitation Form (to be completed and returned to Laura), the Bishop s Customary and the Deacons in the Liturgy. I do want to meet with candidates prior to the liturgy, so let s please make sure to have at least 30 minutes set aside. In terms of my liturgical garb, I will plan to wear (your chasuble) along with my mitre. I am happy to sing parts of the liturgy reserved for the Celebrant if that is your usual custom. Please let s talk about that ahead of time; If you are accustomed to using incense, and want me to participate, I'm happy to, and please check ahead of time about what your customs are; As is customary, please remember to announce in writing or aloud or both that the loose offering will be given to the Bishop s Discretionary Fund. These offerings should be sent to Kirby Purjet at the Diocesan House; At a minimum, please make certain that the candidates presented have had instruction in these basic prerequisites:

- Prayer Book content, - An Outline of the Faith ( The Catechism ), - Bible content, - Church history and, in particular, Episcopal Church history. - Stewardship, hospitality, evangelism, and community engagement. Finally, over the past couple of years I have been encouraging parishes to use the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows in the liturgy - encouraging anyone and everyone to come forward for the laying on of hands and prayers. It's been a great occasion and in some parishes we have had 30, 40, 50 people participate. Kind of like an altar call. Please think about this and let's talk more about it when we get together. As usual, you will also find the annual Diocesan Prayer Cycle on the Visitation Schedule. As a symbol of our unity in Christ within this diocese, churches are listed on the dates that the bishop visits or at some other appropriate time. May we remember one another in our prayers. Also, please note that churches from our Companion Diocese of South Dakota are included as well, and I encourage your prayers for these brothers and sisters in the faith. Peace in Christ, The Rt. Rev. George D. Young, III
