ST. ANDREW S CELEBRATING OUR PAST SHAPING OUR FUTURE 1914 2014 Volume 28 Number 8 St. Andrew s Episcopal Church, Lake Worth, Florida August 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Maybe you have seen this sign in business establishments: In God we trust All others pay cash! It reminds me of the irony that our currency has that motto on them. In God we trust. I am also aware that an important part of our liturgy includes an offering. In a similar way, our justice ministry follows the dictates of Amos 6: 8, to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God, but we still very much depend on our members making a financial investment in this work. There is no getting around the fact that our ministry and mission very much needs money in order to function. How are we to balance this understanding that we do indeed trust in God and still we need cash. For me it starts with the understanding that all that we have as individuals or as a parish comes from God. The same is true for our other ministries such as PEACE and the Way Café. Without God, all our efforts are in vain. It is why we take the time each week to gather together in corporate worship and praise God from whom all blessings flow! We want to put ourselves in mind of our complete and utter dependence on God. By God s grace we are able to do the work that God has given us in reconciling all people to God and to one another in Christ. Come November, we will be asking ourselves what we can do in terms of our time, talent, and treasure to further the work of God s kingdom in the world. Let me suggest that we spend a little time this summer thinking on these things. Watch over thy children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may thy peace which passeth understanding abide all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. AUGUST BIRTHDAYS 2 Douglas Smigal, Jr. 6 David Eakin 9 Allyson Seeley Bonnie Marie Buchanan Khalid Carter 10 Harriet Watson 17 Patricia Donaldson 19 Amy Minto Mark Richards 28 Gene Smalling 30 Elizabeth Bukley Life is a bit slower now and we may have time to just be in the presence of God and waiting on God to reveal to us what God would have us do with all that God has given us. Then when the Fall arrives we won t feel so pressured to come up with answers to the question of how we may best use our God-given resources. May the God of love and abundance be with you all your days and may God direct us in all that we do and say and give for God s work in the world. Father Paul+

AUGUST TAIZE WORSHIP On the third Saturday of August the 18th our 6pm service offers the beauty of contemplative Taize music with healing prayers and communion. All are invited and welcome. FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION This feast day on August 6th each year commemorates the encounter that Peter, James, and John had with Jesus on a mountain when he was transfigured before their eyes and was seen talking with Moses and Elijah. This event gave them a glimpse of the glory that Jesus would ultimately come to by his death, resurrection, and ascension. It was also a sign for them that would give them hope in the trying times that would lie ahead. May we all be filled with the hope of the glory of the risen Christ in our daily lives.
