Lesson 3 Elementary Angel Food Cake Soul Food Series Verse Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen, and I will tell you where to get food that is good for the soul! Isaiah 55:2 NLT The Point of the Lesson: Children will learn that they can rely on God and His strength to get them through unknown or fearful situations. The more they get to know Him personally, the less they will fear. They will see that knowing God comes from understanding His promises in the Bible. The Bible is the sweet nourishment they need to drive out those hunger pains of fear. The Power of God s Word: And so we know and rely on the love God has for us... 1 John 4:16a NIV The Prayer of Each Child: Dear God, Thank You for being faithful to me. You are always there to guide me through everything. Help me to learn and believe Your promises. Give me the strength that I need when I am afraid. Big Room Lesson Introduction Transition for MC: Hey everyone! Who likes going to the grocery store? I know we all try to sneak some extra goodies into the cart without Mom or Dad seeing us. That s part of the fun of going to the store seeing all that food and all of the choices we have. We want to try this or try that. And those commercials don t help they make stuff look way too good. Object Lesson: But we can t just live off of the junk stuff. Our bodies need and rely on healthy food to help us grow stronger and bigger. (hold up the bag and pull out some of the food) We all learn in school how we need to eat more of these things that are good for us. As we eat the healthy food, we rely on it to put these vitamins and minerals (hold up vitamins) into our bodies to help them function correctly. Our body doesn t just make these vitamins on its own. God has designed food to help us that way. Just as our bodies rely on healthy food, we rely on God to provide for our needs. We can t function well without Him. Life is much harder without Him. I would much rather rely on God than on any person. Transition for MC: Just like in a game of football or basketball, you need to rely on your teammates to win a game. Without your team, you would not be able to have a successful season. Just as you need to rely on your team, God wants us to rely on Him. God wants us to know that we can rely on Him to protect and provide for us no matter what. He is our ultimate friend, which means that we can always count on God! Big Room Lesson Video *** Queue the video*** Below is what you will see in the video. Lesson in a Word: Rely What Should I See? Elijah and the Angel Queen Jezebel worshipped Baal (another name for a false idol, kind of like a statue) and not God. She did not like Elijah the prophet because he loved God. She put out the word that she wanted to hurt Elijah and get rid of him. Elijah was afraid so he ran out to the desert. He prayed that God would let him die because he was so afraid. Then he fell asleep. An angel touched him and told him to get up and eat something. Elijah found a cake of bread and a jar of water on the ground by his head. He ate everything, and then fell back asleep. The angel woke him up again and told him to eat more because he would need his strength for a long trip. After Elijah ate the food delivered by the angel, it strengthened him and Elijah was then able to travel for forty days and forty nights to Mount Horab. (Source: 1 Kings 19:1-18)
What s The Key? The key to unlocking this lesson today is to know that we can rely on God to protect and provide for us. God knows everything. (The big word is omniscient, which means all knowing). He is the One who is always watching over us at all times. Elijah was afraid for his life. He was afraid of Queen Jezebel, and he ran away, not knowing where he would go or even what he would eat. But God knew what was happening. He sent an angel to bring food to Elijah. He took care of Elijah, and God will also take care of us. What s That To Me? It can be scary sometimes not knowing what could happen to us. There are so many things we cannot control. Sometimes it can seem like God has more important things to do than help out a kid. But the Bible tells us that we can always rely on God and His love. He loves us no matter what and will always be there for us. He knows what we need even before we ask Him. We are important to God because He made us. How Should I Be? We need to spend time with God so that we can learn to rely on Him. The more we read the Bible, the more we will learn about God and who He is. We can talk to Him anytime just as we would a friend because He is always listening. We can look up and learn Bible verses that tell us about God s promises. As we learn these verses, they will help us to remember that God will always be there to take care of us and provide for us. This week, with an adult s help, we will find five promises from the Bible that will help us rely on God.
