The Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture: End or means?
John 5:39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
"The form here can be either present active indicative second person plural or the present active imperative second person plural. Only the context can decide. Either makes sense here, but the reason given 'because ye think' (clearly indicative), supports the indicative rather than the imperative." - Robertson's Word Pictures
Jesus quarrel with the Pharisees was not over their view of Scripture but over their use of it! You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Israel felt greatly privileged to have the Word of God. They valued them more than gold, even much fine gold Ps. 119:162
Jesus reproached them not because they searched the Scriptures, but because they regarded their search as an end in itself. They misunderstood Scripture s God-intended function, which is to point beyond itself to Christ! - Words or the truth the words conveyed? -Their study was an end in itself.
The proper use of Scripture: - it is they that bear witness to me; yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. John 5:39 -Scripture is the Father s testimony to the Son through the Spirit.
Luke 24: Two disciples on road to Emmaus: Then Jesus said to them, You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. Wasn t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory? Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:25-27

He took the telescope apart, examined the lenses, and made detailed calculations on the distance of its point of focus. The Bible and Binoculars: It s always tempting to use the Bible as binoculars. It s kind of cool to see everyone else s faults in granular detail. It s far less threatening than to have to deal with some of the ugly things I might see in the mirror Larry Osborne Accidental Pharisees
The Bible: Binoculars or Mirror? Beware of Bible study that leads to looking down on others! Pastor Larry Osborne Beware of Bible study that majors on minors! -disputable matters(romans 14)
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. James 1:22-25
Beware of Bible study that majors on minors! -disputable matters(romans 14) What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. Blind guides! You strain your water so you won t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel! Matt. 23:23-24
You can dot all your i s and cross all your t s and still misspell the word! Minors: -who is the Antichrist? -Whale or fish/jonah? -Why God let Satan mess with Job? -Did Apostle Paul use the King James?
What should we do? The Bible: 1. It is not enough to possess a Bible. -superstition. 2. It is not enough to read the Bible.(or hear it read) -great literature. 3. It is not enough to study the Bible. - an accumulation of Bible knowledge is one thing, a growing personal knowledge of Jesus Christ, whom to know is life eternal, is quite another! John Stott
We Must Obey It!
I John 2:3-5 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, I know God, but doesn t obey God s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.
I John 2:9-11 If anyone claims, I am living in the light, but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves another brother or sister is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble. But anyone who hates another brother or sister is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness.
