Toth Summer Institute for Family Spirituality, with graduate courses offered in Jersey City, Ridgewood and South Orange. Reverend Monsignor Raymond Kupke, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor of Church History, presented a lecture, Catholic Immigrants in New Jersey & America, on July 9, 2009; Reverend Vincent Fortunato, O.F.M., Cap., Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Theology, presented a lecture, Reviving Commitment in Marriage and Family, on July 29, 2009. o Theology of the Body for Teens training sessions, co-sponsored with the Archdiocese of Newark and the Offices for Evangelization, Family Life Ministries and Youth and Young Adult Ministries, at the following venues: St. Elizabeth Parish, Wyckoff, NJ, on September 19, 2009; and St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Bloomfield, NJ, on September 20, 2009; and o St. Monica: A Mother s Tears, retreat facilitated by Reverend Douglas J. Ciccarino, S.S.L., S.T.D., Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, wrote the text that accompanies the exhibit Codex Vaticanus (Vat. Gr. 1209), on display at Seton Hall University s Walsh Library from October 5-November 2, 2009. II. Publications Reverend W. Reverend Monsignor Robert J. Wister, D. Eccl. Russell, O.Carm., S.T.D., Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology and Assistant Spiritual Director, has the following distinctions: o had published an article, Thérèse of Lisieux and the Rule of Carmel: A Guide for All, in Mount Carmel 57, no. 1 (July-September 2009): 51-60;

Gadenz, S.T.D., Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, had published his doctoral dissertation as a book: Called from the Jews and from the Gentiles: Pauline Ecclesiology in Romans 9-11. Guarino, S.T.D., Professor of Systematic Theology, was one of the composers and signatories of Do Whatever He Tells Us: The Blessed Virgin Mary in Christian Faith and Life, a statement of Evangelicals and Catholics Together (ECT). The statement appears in First Things 197 (November 2009): 35-45. III. Memberships and Service Reverend Monsignor Gerard H. McCarren, S.T.D., Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and Spiritual Director of the Seminary, did the following: o Performed the ministry of Spiritual Direction for three Newark seminarian deacons and coordinated seminarian Spiritual Direction at Seton Hall s International Institute for Clergy Formation, San Alfonso Retreat House, Long Branch, NJ, from June-July 2009; and o Performed the ministry of Spiritual Direction for six seminarians at the Institute for Priestly Formation, Creighton University, Omaha, NE, from June 10-July 30, 2009.

Russell, O.Carm., S.T.D., Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology and Assistant Spiritual Director, offered the following: o Supervision of the new transitional deacons at the International Institute for Priestly Formation at San Alfonso Retreat House, West End, NJ, from June 28-July 3, 2009; and o Retreats for lay Carmelite communities in Sacramento, CA, from August 7-9, 2009; and in San Francisco, CA, from August 14-16, 2009. Reverend Lawrence B. Porter, Ph.D., Professor of Systematic Theology and Director of the Seminary Library, presented the following: o A Religious Experience in a Manhattan Living Room, or, God and Man at the Frick, illustrated lecture, for the Rector, Spiritual Director and seminarians of St. Andrew s Minor Seminary, Seton Hall University, in the parish hall at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer, Manhattan, NY, on September 26, 2009. The lecture was followed by a tour of the Frick Collection, an art museum in Manhattan; and o The History of Women in Ministry in the Early Church: Adding Up the Contributions of Wealthy Matrons and Dedicated Women Religious, day of recollection, for the Religious Sisters Filippini, at Villa Walsh, Morristown, NJ, on October 3, 2009. Reverend Christopher M. Ciccarino, S.S.L., S.T.D., Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, presented Introduction to the Bible to the new lectors of the Archdiocese of Newark, at the Archdiocesan Center, Newark, NJ, on October 24, 2009.

Grimm, J.D., S.T.L., Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics, presented Practical Spirituality and St. Teresa of Avila, conference, for the Convocation of Lay Carmelites, at Holy Family Parish, Newark, DE, on October 25, 2009. Reverend Pablo T. Gadenz, S.S.L., S.T.D., Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, presented The Word of God Is Living and Active: Praying the Scriptures, talk on Scripture and Spirituality, at the Diaconate Convocation, Diocese of Trenton, Plainsboro, NJ, on October 31, 2009. Diane M. Carr, M.A., 07, Coordinator of the Parish Partnership Program, Institute for Christian Spirituality, presented a talk on the parish mission statement, at a communion breakfast for members of various ministries, at Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Verona, NJ, on November 1, 2009. IV. Speaking Engagements Stephen B. Gregory Y. Gadenz, S.S.L., S.T.D., Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, presented The Scriptures, St. Paul and Jewish Methods of Exegesis, Marzheuser Lecture on Jewish- Catholic Relations, at The Athenaeum of Ohio (Mt. Grimm, J.D., S.T.L., Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics, presented The Morality of Stem Cell Research, talk, at Immaculate Conception Parish, Elkton, MD, on October 28, 2009. V. Conferences and Meetings Reverend Pablo T. Gadenz, S.T.D., Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies, delivered two homilies and a meditation on the Gospel of John at the Applied Biblical Studies Conference, Franciscan University, Steubenville, OH, from July 29-31, 2009.

McCarren, S.T.D., Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and Spiritual Director of the Seminary, attended Newman as Apologist: A Controversialist in Context, the National Newman Conference, sponsored by the Venerable John Henry Newman Association and held at the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, from August 13-15, 2009. Reverend Monsignor Robert J. Wister, Hist.Eccl.D., Associate Professor of Church History, attended Colloque International, Des Couvents en Héritage (International Conference, Religious Houses: A Legacy ), Montréal and Québec, Canada, from October 7-11, 2009, and addressed the conference on Historic and Ecclesiastical Preservation of the Patrimony of the Archdiocese of Newark. VI. Courses Stephen B. Kass, M.S., M.A., 09, Coordinator of Marketing and Development, Institute for Christian Spirituality, as an Adjunct Professor of Theology for Catholic Distance University, taught a summer class, The History of Catholic Spirituality. Reverend John S. Grimm, J.D., S.T.L., Assistant Professor, Christian Ethics, taught Priestly Ministers of the Gospel of Life: Pastoral Application of Catholic Bioethics Principles at the International Institute for Clergy Formation, Long Branch, NJ, from July 6-10, 2009. Reverend Monsignor Gerard H. McCarren, S.T.D., Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and Spiritual Director of the Seminary, taught The Mystery of the Liturgy: Receiving in Celebration and in Life, a 3-credit course, for the Institute for Priestly Formation at Creighton University, Omaha, NE, from July 6-30, 2009.

Russell, O.Carm., S.T.D., Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology and Assistant Spiritual Director, taught classes on the spirituality of St. Thérèse of Lisieux at the Carmelite Novitiate, Middletown, NY, from July 30-31, 2009. VII. Awards and Honors Reverend Mark Francis O Malley, Hist.Eccl.D., Assistant Professor of Church History, earned a doctorate in Ecclesiastical History from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, in July 2009. He wrote his dissertation, An History of the Development of Catholic Military Chaplaincy in the United States of America: 1775-1991, under the direction of Reverend Marcel Chappin, S.J., Vice-Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives. VIII. Upcoming Events Diane M. Carr, M.A., 07, Coordinator of the Parish Partnership Program, Institute for Christian Spirituality, will present The Creed: What We Believe, talk, at the Archdiocese of Newark Catechist Convocation: Catechesis and Proclamation of the Word, at Paramus Catholic High School, Paramus, NJ, on November 7, 2009.
