THE MAGAZINE OF REVIDGE FOLD UNITED REFORMED CHURCH NOVEMBER 2012 TALENT IS GOD GIVEN FAME IS MAN GIVEN CONCEIT IS SELF GIVEN

A word from the Minister I am so ashamed of myself! Why? Because at the time of writing, I have been working alongside all of you in the pastorate for eight months, and only just discovered that every Thursday evening, the uniformed groups meet at Revidge Fold and there are upwards of fifty girls on site. What a wonderful tribute to the Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Leaders. When I called in for a long overdue look see the Rainbows and Brownies were having a pyjama party (no doubt in preparation for their sleepover) and the Guides were preparing for their science project. It was really lovely to have them share in leading worship at out Harvest Festival and we look forward to more Church Parades when hopefully they will once again join us maybe some drama girls? It is also great to see the basement at Revidge back in use for New Generation the Friday evening Youth Club, run by a team from The Abundant Life church. I m just wondering what else may be going on that I have missed if there is anything please let me know it s such fun to be involved in all that s going on the Fellowship Groups in each church, the Lunch Clubs at Trinity and Revidge and the Art Class at Westbury Gardens. It s just wonderful to have the opportunity to meet so many people and make so many new friends and what strikes me over and over is how hard you all work and how committed you all are to the life and worship in all three churches. Our worship life has also been greatly enriched by the addition of two more Sunday evening services. We now have a traditional Sunday evening communion at Trinity on the first Sunday of the month. The second Sunday of the month is a communion service at Higher Bank HFE. This is led by myself with Sheila and Eddie Comberbach Eddie plays the keyboard and Sheila does the reading and various other people have come along, but it would be lovely if more people were to join us. The third Sunday of the month is also a traditional communion service at Revidge Fold, this is a lovely service the inspiration of John Blows. All the services commence at 6.00 p.m. and all are welcome. So what else? Well in addition to a short break in Cambridge for the TLS Tutor s Day (where I met up with Rev. Geoffrey Townsend who sends his regards) a holiday in Bodrum, Turkey, and a day in Windermere for the North West Synod, there have been some lovely happenings in our three churches. At Revidge Fold we had a lovely time celebrating Elaine Smith s 60 th birthday party with a ceilidh and a super supper. We had great fun trying to decide what year various photograph s of Elaine and family were taken. At Trinity we had a lively harvest festival service in which the young people took part and also baptized Charlie Cook the son of Celeste and Dan and great grandson of Joyce and Colin Ingham. It was lovely to welcome Charlie into his church family. Also at Trinity we had a lovely wedding when Carley Guppy and Steve Hayhurst were married, good wishes and every blessing for their future life together go with them.

And talking of weddings we held a special service at Westbury Gardens when Jonathan and Barbara Tustin celebrated their marriage at a special blessing service where they rededicated their wedding vows to one another. This was followed by a lovely buffet for all the church family. Plans for Christmas including our Pastorate Party on December 7 th are well on the way and an idea for an Easter walk of witness is beginning to develop. Derek Estill and I met with Katerina the new Salvation Army Major Katerina is also meeting with the Dean of Blackburn and others so we hope that at this meeting plans for next spring can be developed so watch this space for more news. There is a lot going on and with God s help we hope and pray that we can make a difference as we strive to further God s kingdom in our worship, work and witness. Love and blessings to everyone as always, Lena Unfortunately for the organisers, it was a disappointing turn out for the GEAR Day at Revidge on 6 th October. We are hoping to hold a similar event next year and we will give out more information earlier and advertise it more widely within our local area rather than across the Lancashire area. Also, unfortunately the Big Sing at Revidge has been postponed until spring. Details will be available nearer the time. Finally along with all the people in our churches and on our prayer lists, please continue to keep Susan Wilkinson in prayer at this time. Sue will be known to many of you and at the time of writing she is quite poorly, so please continue to pray for Sue, Tony and family.

I would like to recommend this inspiring book to you all. If you have a Christian book that you can recommend, please write a short review and email it to Douglas for the next Reach Out. Daleen ten Cate Life without Limits I can remember thinking the first time I saw the DVD excerpt of Nick Vujicic in church that I wanted to know more about him and his amazing life-journey. Nick Vujicic was born without arms or legs and has learned to overcome his disability to live an independent, rich and fulfilling life. He has truly become a model for those of us seeking true happiness. Nick s central message, as a Christian international motivational speaker, is that the most important goal for anyone is to find their life s purpose despite whatever difficulties or seemingly impossible odds stand in their way. Nick shares how his faith in God has been his central source of strength and explains that once he found his own sense of purpose inspiring others to make their lives and the world better he found the confidence to build a rewarding and productive life without limits. He offers practical advice for realising a life full of fulfilment and happiness by building trust in others, developing supportive relationships, and gaining strength for the journey. Nick does not deny the times he felt very depressed and removed from God. He shares his own life experiences about the good, the bad and the difficult times and shows us how he learned to accept what he could not control and to focus instead on what is possible. A big thank you to everyone who brought in food at Harvest, for the Food bank. Thank you for being Jesus hands and feet on earth. Daleen ten Cate
