Saint Charles Swinton Parish Newsletter 10 015 Sixth of Easter Year B. Page 66in Mass Book. Ask in My Name In the Gospel Reading, Christ suggests a remedy for any problem we have. The Father will give you anything you ask for, he says, if you will just ask for it in Christ s name. But what is it to ask for something in Christ s name? It can t be a matter of simply tacking the name of Christ on to any prayer. I would like a Porsche, please, in the name of Christ. Prayer isn t magic. It isn t a matter of using the right magical formulas in order to make God do what you want him to do. It helps here to consider the homely cases in which one person asks something in the name of another. A secretary can ask for the mail in her boss s name: I m just here to pick up the mail for my boss! A child can ask a neighbor for a cup of sugar in his mother s name: Mrs. Murphy, my mother wants to know if you could lend her a cup of sugar. In these cases, the person asking can ask in the name of another because he somehow identifies himself as in relationship with that other: my boss, my mother. Something a connection of shared work, a family relation binds the two of them together. continued over The Coming Week 10 Sixth of Easter. Mass 6.00pm (Saturday) 8.45am. 11.00am 3.00pm Sacrament of Confirmation. Thirty-four of our children will receive this special sacrament of God s Spirit at this celebration. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. 3.00pm at Holy Name church, Oxford Road - Pause for Hope An ecumenical service for all who have been affected by cancer at some point in their lives. with the Bishop of Manchester, David Walker and the Bishop of Salford, John Arnold. Monday 11 Tuesday 1 7.30pm Parish Development Group meets. Wednesday 13 Our Lady of Fatima. The Blessed Virgin appeared six times to three shepherd children,, Lucia, Francesca and Jacinta between 13 and 13, 117. Her message was one of repentance to bring about God s peace on the world. in church. Thursday 14 St Matthias, Apostle chosen by the apostles to take the place of Judas Iscariot, so that the number of apostles might remain at twelve. Tradition has it that Matthias went on to preach in Ethiopia. Friday 15. Saturday.00am Mass in Cemetery. 11.30am 1noon Sacrament of Reconciliation. 17 The Ascension of the Lord Mass 6.00pm (Saturday) 8.45am. 11.00am Today is World Communications Day. At the Ascension Jesus commanded his followers Go our to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation and this day invites us to reflect on how we continue effectively to do just that. Ramblers Group ~ Llandudno Coach Leaves at 8.30am. Please see poster in porch and sign up if you would like to go. Further Ahead Monday 18. 7.00pm Meeting of church Jubilee Group.

To ask in Christ s name is like this, too. You ask in the name of Christ when you are in the kind of relation to him that lets you say my with respect to him. And what would bind the two of you together in this way? What should follow that my? It shouldn t be my servant, as the magician in effect says in his heart of hearts. No, not my servant, but my Lord. Take him as Lord, and you have to recognize that, as Lord, he loves and cares for his own. He knows what to give to those who are his in answer to their prayers. So if you ask the Father for something in the name of Christ, then you are doing the opposite of what the magician does: you ask, being prepared to accept what your Lord wants you to give you. What you are given will be a good gift if it is in accord with his will, even if it isn t in accord with yours. To ask the Father in Christ s name, then, is to trust Christ with your life as you ask. Eleonore Stumpin Saint Louis Jesuits Liturgical website. Jubilee Celebrations Thank you so much to all those who gave their time and energy to the organising of the lovely floral celebration of our church Jubilee. Most were relative beginners and have developed their skills over the coming weeks. And thanks to the work that the HCPT team put into the organising of the magnificent concert on Friday evening and what a lovely setting in which to have it. Thanks to the many people who have helped to organise and have participated in the many events of the past year. I hope soon to have a display of photographs of the flowers and the final celebration Salford Royal Hospital Chaplaincy Volunteers. The team of volunteers who support the full-time chaplains in their work are an important part of the chaplaincy team and deeply appreciated by staff and patients alike.
