January 19-25, 2013 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 43 Thus began the brilliant and historic career of Papanasam Sivan as film music composer. Normally the lyric writer writes only the words for a film song and it is the music composer who sets the tune and the background music score. However Sivan not only wrote the lyrics but also set their tunes by singing them himself as he wrote! The music composer had to set only the background music and fine-tune the song. It is very rarely that the lyric writer sets the tune in Indian Cinema and that s what makes Papanasam Sivan great! Indeed the trend today is for the music composer to set the tune first and then for the lyric writer to fill in with the lyrics! Seetha Kalyanam was a success and the songs, rendered mostly by S. Rajam, became popular. And then Sivan joined his small town friend K.,Subramaniam and, with the success of Pavalakodi, both began to go places. The two worked together and the songs in Naveena,Sarangadhara (1936, MKT. Bhagavathar and S. D. Subbulakshmi in lead roles and shot in Calcutta) became very popular. A song by SDS about a dove as a messenger of love Venn Puraave became a raving hit. (In 1980 s, S. D. Subbulakshmi told this writer during a twoday chat that, when she was travelling by a car on her way to Chidambaram down a rural road in 1930s, an old rustic woman who had heard about her visit stopped her car on the deserted highway. The woman would not let the star go until she sang the hit song of hers Ven Puraave! Poor, old and bent, the woman thanked SDS profusely and remarked that, after hearing that song specially rendered for her right on the highway and meeting her favourite star in flesh and blood, she could die in peace!) 1937 was a leap-ahead year for Tamil film music. And for Papanasam Sivan and M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar! Two of MKT-starrers, Y. V. Rao s Chintamani and the American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan s Ambikapathi created box-office records. The films seemed to run endlessly - 25 weeks &. 50 weeks... and more! The reason was the songs. Bhagavathar and Papanasam Sivan became living legends. Songs of both films were the rage, and every middle-class house having a gramophone proudly claimed to have all the records of the two films. Sivan, being a musical genius, knew the pulse of the listeners and chose his ragas with accent on melody which could be easily sung - or hummed - by the common man or woman. Besides, he had the knack of choosing the right raga to suit the singer s voice, range, timbre and singing talents and skills. ( Chintamani earned such huge profits that the producers, Rayal Talkie Distributors, built a cinema hall in their home town Madurai out of the cash overflow. They named it - yes - Chintamani! It still functions after seventy-plus years! ) After the phenomenal success of Chintamani and Ambikapathi, Papanasam Sivan became a star of Tamil Cinema and became a major draw. His name appeared prominently in film publicity materials and, until the early 1950s, he dominated the Tamil film horizon. Almost every other film had songs by him composed in pure Carnatic style. Many of his songs became popular. Thus he helped the growth of not only film music rooted in classical music but also Thamizh Isai through cinema. Interestingly Papanasam Sivan acted in a few films too and won much praise. He played Kuchela in K. Subramanyams Bhaktha Kuchela (1936), R. S. Mani s Kubera Kuchela (1943),and also K. Subramanyams classic and cult film Thyaga Bhoomi (1939). With his lean, ascetic body and everhungry look he was the ideal choice to play Kuchela, Lord Krishna s childhood friend and playmate, the poor but fertile father of a brood of twenty-seven kids! In Thyaga Bhoomi he played a man of great vision and social consciousness and high ideals who fought against untouchability and such discriminatory practices against the depressed classes of Hindu society. Indeed the role was written specially for Sivan by the writer Kalki. (To be continued) A group of residents of T. Nagar Fed staged a demonstration in front of R1 Mambalam police station on Jan. 13 to protest against illegal parking and hawker encroachment. They dispersed after police officers assured them that a study will be undertaken to bring about changes in traffic regulations. But the police officers reportedly pointed out that it was for Chennai Corporation to take steps to regulate hawkers. The police also said that they would meet residents once in 15 days to solve emerging civic issues because of traffic congestion. Residents alleged that the number of hawkers in T. Nagar had increased considerably over the past few months. Residents protest illegal parking, hawker encroachment They said that the number of shops on Railway Border Road had crossed 700 though the High Court had permitted only 131. Similarly, the number of hawkers on Usman Road A number of shops in the neighbourhood were found closed for Pongal on Jan. 14. Temple chariot almost ready Construction of a chariot for Arulmigu Kasi Viswanathar Temple (Kuppaiah Street, West Mambalam), initiated by Kasi Viswanathar Thirukovil Theru Thirupani Arakattalai, is nearing completion. E. G. Sekar (President) told Mambalam Times that the temple car will be ready for the brahmotsavam on March 23. It will undergo trial runs earlier on nearby roads. Devotees have donated liberally for the project, he added. Shops close for Pongal He said that work on the temple car has been going on day and night for the past 8 months. He appealed for donations to make two 4-ft tall wooden horses (Rs. 20,000 each) and four 7-ft tall lions (Rs. 35,000 each). More details can be had from Sekar in phone 99414 26226, S. Mohan (Secretary) in 93828 15033 and S. Jayamani (Treasurer) in 99410 61933. had gone up. In a petition, the residents said that every inch of commercially significant area had been occupied by hawkers and traders with the support of officials. In 2009, Chennai Corporation had requested Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited to comprehensively redevelop T. Nagar to ensure smooth traffic flow, integrate commercial activities and improve environmental quality. Chennai Corporation has firmed up plans and proposed some key projects such as pedestrianisation of Thyagaraya Road, South Usman Road and areas around Panagal Park; dedicated hawker zones in the pedestrian areas; an elevated skywalk connecting Mambalam railway station and T. Nagar bus terminus; redesigning of Panagal Park; integrated traffic signals and multi-level car parking. Report: courtesy The Times of India. CMYK

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Repair work begins on Mambalam High Road Sir, After a number of reports published in your esteemed paper about the bad condition of Mambalam High Road (the last report was in your issue No. 24 dated Nov. 10-17), there seems to be some action taken by Chennai Corporation to repair the road last week. An earth mover was used to clear the debris and other construction material dumped on the roadside during the construction of Rangarajapuram flyover. I hope that the work will be continued and the road which is in a very bad condition will be re-laid. Encroachments which block the entire stretch of the road from Rangarajapuram railway gate to Duraiswamy subway too need to be removed to make it fully motorable. Once the road is re-laid and encroachments are removed, it can carry a significant amount of traffic away from Usman Road. I request the authorities to continue the good work and rid Mambalam High Road of encroachments and re-lay it. Sriram, 90, Bazullah Road, T.Nagar, Ph: 98407 73410. Speed breakers needed on Motilal Street Sir, We thank Chennai Corporation for re-laying Motilal Street, T. Nagar after a long time. However 2-wheelers and autorickshaws, which earlier used to avoid the road owing to its bad condition, have started to use it as a thoroughfare and drive on it at a high speed. Since it is a safety hazard to both motorists and pedestrians, we request the authorities to install multiple speed breakers on the road to slow down the drivers. - President, Motilal Street Residents Welfare Association (31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar).
