I blinked, and summer s over. Schools are all starting back up again, and that means new beginnings in the life of the church as well. We will celebrate Rally Day on Sunday, 4 th with a congregational breakfast beginning at 8:30. So please come before worship and enjoy a time of food and fellowship. Sunday school will resume for our children and youth on Sunday the 11 th. The Pastor s adult Sunday school class will also resume that day. We will kick of classes this school year learning about the ELCA s national assembly. Then we will begin a series on the Reformation as we look forward to commemorating the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. I n s i d e t h i s i s s u e : Rally Day 2 Christian Education Ministry Stewards Committee News 2 3 4 Crayon Poem 5 Christian Education/ Birthdays 5 Calendar 6 Sunday, 11 th is an important date for another reason as well. It is the 15 th Anniversary of the 2001 attack and collapse of the Twin Towers. Thousands of innocent people lost their lives that day, and it altered the very fabric of how we live in community with one another. As adults, we all can remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we learned about the attack on the Towers. I was in my first week as a freshman at Capital University. It was the first time I was living away from home. I came back to my dorm room after calculus class, and my roommate was watching the news coverage on TV. I was watching as the second plane hit. I watched both Towers fall. That was a painful day. It is a pain and grief that continues with us today. I think it is also strange to note that for those entering high school this year, the events of 9/11 happened before they were born. A new generation of young adults doesn t remember a world before those events. On the 15 th Anniversary of 9/11, we will have a service of lament. This time of worship will give space to cry out to God for the loss of life that happened on that day, and for the continued loss of life and pain and suffering that continues each and every day. It is a cry that says, how long, oh Lord? How long must the innocent suffer? How long must we continue to war with such disregard for life? How long must we remain polarized? How long will we continue to hate? Worship on 11 th will be a time of remembrance, sorrow, but also hope and healing. I hope you are able to join us that day. May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, guide your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Blessings, Pastor Karen

Just A Box of Crayons by Shane DeRolf While walking in a toy store the day before today, I overheard a Crayon Box with many things to say. I don t like Red! said Yellow; and Green said, Nor do I! And no one here likes Orange, but no one knows why. Said Blue to all the others. Something here is wrong! Well, I bought that box of crayons so the crayons could all see. They watched me as I colored with Red and Blue and Green And Black and White and Orange and every color in between. They watched as Green became the grass and Blue became the sky. The Yellow sun was shining bright on White clouds drifting by. Colors changing as they touched, becoming something new. They watched me as I colored; they watched till I was through. And when Id finally finished, I began to walk away. And as I did the Crayon Box had something more to say I do like Red! said the Yellow, and Green said, So do I! And Blue you are terrific, So high up in the sky. We are a Box of Crayons, each of us unique, But when we get together, the picture is complete.
