Third Sunday of Lent March 8, 2015 3 Faustina: Messenger of Divine Mercy, the moving, live production performed by actress Maria Vargo and directed by Leonardo Defilippis of Saint Luke Productions, will be presented at St. Francis of Assisi Family Life Center in Grapevine on Wednesday, March 25 th at 7:30 p.m., at Our Lady Queen of Peace Family Life Center in Wichita Falls on Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m., and at St. Patrick Cathedral Pastoral Center in Fort Worth on March 29 th at 7:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by Rachel Ministries. Experience firsthand the life and message of Saint Faustina whose personal encounters with Jesus have inspired a world-wide devotion to Christ s Divine Mercy. This drama also brings audiences a riveting modern story that makes Divine Mercy remarkably relevant and urgent for our world today. The program is filled with all the elements of professional theater, runs 90 minutes, and is suitable for ages 13 and up. Admission is $8.00 for adults, or $5.00 for youth 17 & under. For tickets and additional information, visit www.fwdioc.org/ faustina. Pastor s Points by Father Flynn "Remember, man you are dust and to dust you shall return." With these words many of you received the blessing of ashes. Applying ashes to the head has ancient biblical origins which, in those times, signified sorrow for sin and repentance. While there was no connection to a liturgical season in those times, nonetheless when the institutional Church sometime between the 8 th and 10 th Centuries chose the ritual to mark the beginning of the Lenten liturgical season is both fitting and significant that the themes of sorrow for sin and repentance are at the foundation of Lenten practices. Most of us know that the ashes are actually the remains of the burned palm fronds from the prior year s Palm Sunday liturgy. Recalling that Palm Sunday marked the triumphal entrance into Jerusalem by Christ during which many of the Jews covered his path with palm fronds and shouted Alleluia as He passed by, giving public recognition of His kingship it is appropriate that those same fronds initially given as signs of praise and homage now become the visible symbol of sin and death. The mark of ashes on the forehead of the faithful reminds us that among the sufferings Christ bore for us was the mark of the crown of thorns on His divine head so our ashes becomes a type of the crown that was our sins. Just as in biblical times, the ashes on the forehead becomes a visible sign to all who see them in our modern world, of the sinful condition of man and his need for sorrow and repentance. When we think about it this ritual is really a very small thing, very insignificant in the scope of human actions, yet it is deeply symbolic of our human condition and serves as a reminder that the Lenten season is much more than just six weeks to plan the Easter egg hunt and buy the Peeps and chocolate bunnies for our children and families. If you attend daily Mass and pay close attention to the Scripture readings in the Eucharistic liturgies throughout Lent you will notice a distinct difference in tone and emphasis from the first three weeks to the final three weeks. The Gospel readings in the first three weeks are all from the Synoptics, Matthew, Mark and Luke, while the final three weeks shifts completely to the Gospel of John both with appropriate Old Testament texts. The theme of the first part of Lent is a call to a life of Gospel conversion with all that entails, while the second part focuses on acquainting us with the Person of Christ as our Savior. The first part reminds us of our inadequacy in living the life of a disciple of Jesus, and just as the ashes on our forehead are meant to remind us the we came from dust and will return there, the second part reminds us that the only way we can fulfill the need for our salvation is through the Person of Christ. May God bless you abundantly during this holy season and my prayer for you is that you come to know, in a very real and personal way, just how much our God loves us by the saving death of His Son on the Cross. Upcoming Events How well do you know Catholic History? A 6 week Course with Steve Wilcox. Beginning Sun., March 15th through April 26th at 6:30pm (No Class Easter Weekend)
