ON THE JOURNEY By Dr. Ron Hinson The Measure of Christian Stewardship One of my childhood memories is standing tall at the edge of my grandparent s door to have my growth marked with a date and name. I think it must have been a tradition in lots of places. I had a similar pattern with my children and now have a similar door marking ritual with my grandchildren. They do grow quickly! Churches have often attempted to measure their progress with measures of attendance, numbers of baptisms, or numbers of contacts made in the community. From a Bill Gates standpoint, quantitative measures are always a necessary element to measure the success of a venture. It also goes a long way toward increasing your use of quantitative measuring and tracking devices, which is likely to keep Microsoft moving for some time. Jesus witness to us about the measures of life is considerably different. It certainly did not neglect aspects of material concerns, because Jesus said more about how stewardship is to be exercised and demonstrated than he said about Heaven and Hell combined. In fact, Jesus often spoke very directly about the concerns we have for food, shelter, and clothing and addressed the nature of our responsibilities in the world as we use and share in meeting those needs. He also zeros in on the challenges of not confusing our needs with our wants, nor confusing our responsibilities with our attempts to work-around those responsibilities. Jesus spoke very directly to the manner in which the church is to demonstrate to the world what it means to be the people of God. He describes very directly our responsibilities to the world in which we live to provide salt and light to our shared experiences of life. He taught us to build relationships in responsible ways that reflect His way of living. He taught us to avoid idolatries in every form. He taught us to trust and to obey and to grow in faith. Jesus measures of our stewardship were broad and boldly demonstrative of God s plans for His world. It s time for our church to stand at the door and be measured. Let s look expectantly for the growth God is aiming to see from His children. You are cordially invited to The LaFayette Baptist Church Family Reunion Celebration Sunday, October 29, 2017 Our reunion event will begin at 9:30am as we share in worship together. Following our extended worship, we will share in a covered dish meal on the church grounds. This special event is a celebration of the past, present, and future of LaFayette Baptist Church.

Our courses for preschoolers, children, and youth will also conclude that evening. The LBC Family All Saints Celebration is scheduled for Sunday, November 5. More information about this teaching event will be shared soon. It has been wonderful to welcome four new people to choir over the last few weeks! There is still time to join us as we prepare for Christmas! Adults, youth, and children will be involved in our Christmas program called Wonder and Glory. It will be on Sunday evening, December 10th at 5:30 pm. Mrs. April is coordinating our Children s Christmas Choir. If you attended Sunday School Open House for children, you already have the dates for most of the rehearsals. See Mrs. April with questions. I have emailed all youth and youth parents with details for the opportunities youth have to participate. See me with questions about that. I m looking forward to our stewardship emphasis in worship for the month of October. You don t want to miss this great opportunity to learn more about what it means to be good stewards of all God has entrusted to us. I am so grateful to serve with all of you! Melanie ************************************************************ Heart Health Fair - Saturday, October 21st Fellowship Hall of LaFayette Baptist Have you seen a new face at church and wondered who that person is? This is your opportunity. Just the fact you saw them is a sign you need to introduce yourself. The Holy Spirit may be urging you to be the instrument of welcome. Confidently go to this person, have a listening ear, and pray continuously. What might this person need? How can you be of assistance? It might be nice if you asked this person to sit with you or you with them. Be a friend and show them the way to the Welcome Center. What is his or her name? Maybe you could introduce this person to the pastor and others in the body. Wonder what Sunday School class might be the best fit? Does this person need to know about our fully staffed nursery that we call ETC (extended teaching care)? Wonder if they have plans for lunch? Be yourself and be honest. Love visitors like Jesus does and remember you are the one God picked to welcome this person. 9 am - 1 pm Presented in partnership with Cape Fear Valley Health Systems This Heart Health Fair is being planned for our members and for folks in the neighborhood. The impetus behind this event is that the church will be placing 2 AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in different parts of the building. We need to train individuals on the use of these potentially life-saving devices. It was suggested that we plan a community event at the same time that would utilize resources of Cape Fear Valley Hospital s community programs. Look for fliers in your Bible Study groups and on the Missions Board. The AED training will be offered to invited leadership of the church. Health Fair elements open to all who attend include: Hands-Only CPR training; the Mended Hearts support group; free Blood Pressure Checks; the CFV Blood Mobile will be here for donations; and info on Advance Directives. Special thanks to Beth Langley for helping to coordinate this event.

Preschool and Children s Ministries October is a busy month for our Preschool and Children s Ministries. While it may seem like we don t have any big events, we do have several big events we are planning for. Throughout October, our Family Connections class will continue on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm in the Multipurpose Room. This month we will be focusing on Jesus who He is and what He is doing. Our fall party for Connections is scheduled for Wednesday, November 1. As our church body is focusing on stewardship this month, we will also have a special Sunday School lesson on stewardship for our 1st-6th graders on Sunday, October 15. Our preschoolers will have a take-home sheet that morning to help facilitate discussions at home on Christian stewardship. I hope all of our parents, grandparents, and guardians know that we are happy to be resources for you as you teach your kids about Godly giving. Our sign-ups for Children s Missions Day end on Sunday, October 1. That special event is scheduled for Saturday, November 4. This is an all-day event for our 1st-6th graders to learn about how God can use them as missionaries at school, at home, and in their community. It s always a great day, and I cannot wait to take your kids! This month will also have information for older preschoolers and school-age children about participating in Christmas music during the Advent season. We begin those rehearsals in November, and I hope your children will be excited to share in our celebration of our Savior s birth. Our 3rd-6th graders can also be looking forward to an invitation to Passport Kids Camp next summer. In order to get the week we want, we have to register our group in October. Finally, all of LBC is invited to our Family All Saints Celebration on Sunday, November 5. More information about this special event will be shared throughout October, but the Preschool and Children s Ministry Teams are anxious for you to meet many of our special guests that evening, including Lottie Moon and Martin Luther King, Jr. We have so much to look forward to this fall. Sincerely, April *************************************************************** NEW Missions Initiative!
