ST. FRANCIS XAVIER C.W.L. GENERAL MEETING February 13, 2018 The February meeting was held in the St. Francis Xavier Large Hall after a delicious Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. President Margaret Maloney greeted Father Brennan and 21 members present. Carol Sulpher led us in The League Prayer Motioned by Joan Lemay, seconded by Diane Dillon, to accept the agenda. TREASURER S REPORT Jane Valliquette Jane gave the following financial report: Financial Statements for November, December and January The opening balance on November 1, 2017 was $16,130.77 and the closing balance on November 30, 2017 was $24,157.14 which included a bank balance of $18,705.24 and two GIC s at $3,351.90 and $2100.00 respectively. The opening balance on December 1, 2017 was $18,705.24 and the closing balance on December 31, 2017 was $11,801.43. The opening balance on January 1, 2018 was $11,801.43 and the closing balance on January 31, 2018 was $11,378.83. Walmart She informed us that because Walmart has discontinued their charge account policy, we will now be using Gift Cards for funeral lunch expenses; these gift cards will be passed along from one Funeral Team Leader to another. Budget Jane reviewed the proposed budget for 2018. Motioned by Jane Valliquette, seconded by Jean Spilchen, that we approve the proposed budget. All in favour. SPIRITUAL ADVISOR FATHER BRENNAN Father Brennan thanked us for ongoing donation toward the new front doors of the church. He explained the problem with the middle door. He reminded us that Lent starts tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, and gave us ideas for prayer, fasting and almsgiving.! 2
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS Spiritual Development Carol Sulpher Carol reminded us about the World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 2 p.m. at The Renfrew Presbyterian Church. She also asked for volunteers to lead the Stations of the Cross at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays during Lent before the 7 p.m. Mass. We will be using the older booklets for the Stations. Organization Debbie MacDonald Debbie reported the following: Because the CWL Database is still off-line, all numbers are unofficial for now. We have 130 new and renewed members; which includes 9 new members She sent out a welcome email along with pertinent info, notice of the meeting and links to 7 of the 9 new members. She also sent out renewal notices to 7 out of the 18 members who had not renewed their memberships. Debbie will consult with past presidents to see how many outstanding memberships we will cover and will then contact the remaining outstanding members. Communications Rita Mears Since Rita was absent there was no report. Education and Health Martha Scott Johanna read Martha s report. There are 15 children enrolled in the On Our Way with Jesus program. The children received the first card from their Prayer Buddy when they made their First Confession on December 2 nd. Rosaries have been ordered for the communicants and CWL Prayer Buddies will be invited to give these along with their card to their Prayer Buddy at the luncheon after the First Communion Mass, Sunday, April 29 th at 10:30 a.m. Christian Family Life Elaine Turner 14 members participated in the Amoris Laetitia Book Study; 3 are reading on their own. Sessions resume on Thursday, February 8 th, to continue on Thursdays until March 8 th. Elaine presented a Baptism gift to the Deslaurier family. Cecilia Kusluski has agreed to help out in this convenorship by conducting the Prayer Services for Deceased Members at the funeral home and by making gift presentations when Elaine is unavailable. Elaine made available to the members copies from the Provincial CFLSC Chair, Linda Squarzolo, of a statement on the 30 th Anniversary of Morgentaler written by Bishop Gendron, President of CCCB. May 13-20 is National CWL s chosen week for the Family Life theme. Carol Sulpher and Elaine are on RTO/ERO District #21Elder Abuse Committee and are available to do presentations.! 3
Members were encouraged to read National s CFL Chairperson s Article: Separated or Divorced Women; You Have A Place Among Us in the recent League Magazine. CFL Chairperson is looking for pictures of CWL Activities that go with the CFL Ministry for a project to be presented at the April Spring meeting. Plans are proceeding for the First Communion Bowling Event on April 15 th with the help of Marilyn Campbell and Margaret Maloney; their assistance is greatly appreciated. The CWL is paying for the Bowling and St. Francis Xavier Parish is paying for the pizza. Elaine, Marilyn and Margaret will represent the CWL. Elaine contacted Jason Dedo, Chaplain at St. Joseph s High School, regarding a subscription to the Youth Edition of The Salt & Light Magazine. He was very agreeable to the idea and said that in addition to being a help in Religious Education Studies, the magazines will be left out for students to browse. Elaine provided the report she will be presenting for the Blue & Gold. She also suggested that we should do more for our Seniors who might appreciate a visit. Gifts have been ordered for the 2 women in RCIA who are becoming members of the Catholic Church. Community Life Susan Ringrose On May 8, 2018 we will have a speaker from the Dementia Society to speak to us and Our Lady of Fatima CWL. The cost is $100 which will be shared by both councils at $50 each. Corresponding Secretary Angela McAdam Angela reported that she sent 3 condolence notes and 1 thinking of you card. Parish Activities Danielle Dawkins The January Coffee party was a success with 3 tables of participants. Volunteers will be scheduled as per their availability. March 31 st is the reception for the 2 RCIA candidates being received into the church. We will be serving beverages and squares after the Mass. Danielle is looking for one expert kitchen person and several volunteers to help with the First Communion Lunch on April 29 th. Confirmation is in November with details to follow.. Resolutions and Legislation Shirley-Ann Holly Shirley-Ann thanked Margaret Maloney and Danielle Dawkins for spearheading the CWL involvement in the Bishop s Call for Conscience Email Campaign. The information and sample letter regarding health care workers is along the lines of the National Convention Resolution. Shirley-Ann will contact Deacon Adrian Chaput regarding plans for any other resolutions to be addressed. She received the link from Joan Lemay for The Big Interview with Deacon Andrew Bennett on topics regarding legislation. Historian Joan Lemay Joan reported that she will be doing up the history of our CWL for the last 50 years for our 50 th anniversary as a council.! 4
Funeral Luncheons Diane Dillon There were 2 funeral lunches in January. PRESIDENT S REPORT Margaret Maloney President Margaret thanked everyone who attended the joint CWL Potluck which was rescheduled from December 12 th and January 23 rd. Special thanks go to Shirley- Ann and Martha for convening the event. Our new executive gathered on January 30 th for dessert preceding the meeting. Margaret thanked each executive member and funeral team leader for their past leadership and energy in planning the year ahead. Please do not hesitate to contact them with ideas, questions or comments. The CWL assisted Father Brennan and Martha in their efforts in gathering email addresses over the past two weekends. Thanks go to Joan, Elaine, Shirley McCanna, Lore and Shirley-Ann for their assistance. A special thank you to Danielle for her work and leadership. We will be celebrating the World Day of Prayer at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 2 nd at The Renfrew Presbyterian Church. Special thanks go to Carol and Jean for their work. Finally thanks to Carol for animating the installation of the new executive this evening. Special thanks go to Father Brennan, Joan, Johanna, Martha and Jane for their extra efforts in helping in the transition. NEW BUSINESS The Joy of Love Book Study As a follow-up to this project, Father Brennan will answer questions on the Catholic Church s position on Divorce and Annulment at the March monthly meeting. Some people have questions but didn t want to do the book study. Father Brennan s 40 th Anniversary of Ordination Father Brennan will celebrate the 40 th Anniversary of his ordination on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Father will send invitations to all the parishes in which he has served. Diane and Lore will take care of the reception after the Mass.
