Newsletter Date: December 13, 2010 Rotary Club of Bakersfield South P.O. Box 2021 Bakersfield, CA 93303 47+ Years of Service - Chartered February 28, 1963 CALL TO ORDER President Scott Barks Invocation: Roger Allred Flag Salute: Mike McMasters & the Young Marines Visiting Rotarians: Jeff Johnson & Don Simpson (Downtown) Guests: Gale Hammett (Past BSR President) Jason Younger Birthday: John Knight (12/12) December is Rotary Family Month On a lovely Autumn day at Bakersfield South Rotary, we got to see the fall colors as Mike McMasters lead the pledge with the Young Marines. President Scott asked Kate to lead us in God Bless America. President Scott Barks then introduced our two visiting Rotarians from Downtown, Jeff Johnson and Don Simpson. THE FOUR-WAY TEST Of the things we think, say or do: We were also pleased to host a past BSR president, Gale Hammett and a guest of Mike McMasters, Jason Younger. It was great to have all the guests with us. 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIEND- SHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? We celebrated the birthday of John Knight on 12/12. The Great Scott asked John if he had any words of wisdom that comes from being another year older. John said the he would just quote Ken Byrum saying that he is older than dirt. We collected more toys for Toys for Tots today. David Winegar volunteered to be the delivery boy. We also got a nice thank you book from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary for the dictionaries that BSR provided.

Page 3 Tony Martinez, of the Bakersfield Police Department was our program today. He spoke of the impact that graffiti has on our community. Bakersfield City spends $1.7 in graffiti removal and the County spends $1.3 million. Approximately $17 BILLION is spent in the US annually. He told us that San Jose has been very successful in dealing with the problem and his department is following their lead. Graffiti breeds crime and drug traffic and, unless it is eliminated, it causes what is called broken window syndrome, which breeds more crime From the Bakersfield City Website: The City of Bakersfield takes great pride in assuring a safe and clean environment for all its residents. The Anti-Graffiti Program provides free graffiti removal services. We invite you to call and participate in any of the following ways: To request graffiti removal services for home or business, call 32-ERASE (323-7273) To request free matching paint with rollers or paint brushes to remove graffiti yourself, call 32-ERASE (323-7273). Roger Allred and the rotten grandkids had a fun day, ringing the Salvation Army bell at Vons. To report graffiti vandalism in progress, call the Police Department Communications Centers at 327-7111. To report a graffiti location, whether it is a wall, sidewalk, curb, light pole, sign, etc., call 32-ERASE (323-7273). To join the City's Adopt-A-Wall program, or to have a community service project removing graffiti, call 661 326-3183. Rotary became a part of the pageantry in 1923, when the Rotary Club of Pasadena entered a float in the 34th annual Rose Parade. The club participated in three more Rose Parades 1927, 1946, and 1966 before making it an annual tradition in 1980. That year, recognizing the parade s potential for promoting Rotary to an audience of millions worldwide, clubs in the western United States decided to sponsor a float in honor of the organization s 75th anniversary. The Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee was later formed and continues to coordinate the fundraising for and construction of the float today. Float themes have reflected Rotary s efforts to eradicate polio, its commitment to service, and its humanitarian programs. Rotary International does not fund the float; the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee receives donations from individual clubs and Rotarians. On 1 January, the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee will celebrate 32 consecutive years in the parade with a float proclaiming the 2010-11 RI theme.
