I ntrod uction I n Scripture wisdom is personified as a woman. Personification is a figure of speech that gives human qualities or human form to inanimate objects or abstract concepts. Wisdom s feminine representation does not mean she is a literal female, but provides a spiritual metaphor that gives us insight into her essence and character. God created this metaphor to help His people grasp some abstract ideas that are not always easily understood. This can often be the case with concepts based in the realm of the unseen. When invisible principles become real through word pictures, they become applicable in the lives of believers. That s the reason we study, isn t it? In II Timothy 2:15, Paul instructed his son in the faith to Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. We study to know God and to know how to live in ways that please Him and keep us from shame. Lady Wisdom has a lot to say on these important subjects. It s interesting to note that Scripture personifies Folly as an immoral woman (Proverbs 9:13-18). In contrast to Wisdom s task of promoting the holy, Folly seeks to satisfy carnal urges. Jesus frequently used metaphors and parables to teach Kingdom concepts. As we look at Lady Wisdom s role from Genesis to Revelation, we will see a beautiful story unfold. Lady Wisdom has been and 11 Wisom is a Lady Sigs new.indd 11
Wisdom is a Lady will continue to be instrumental in God s overarching plan for His Bride. Obviously, while we still live in this natural world, both male and female make up Christ s church. Regardless of gender, the Bride has much to learn from Wisdom. As we journey through this study together, I invite you to join in with a heart open to receive the revealed Word of God. Together, we will learn from this noble woman who was with God before the world s foundations were laid (Proverbs 8:27). As we go, we will examine some key components I pray will equip and inspire you. May the Lord ignite great passion in our lives to be both Kingdom builders and the sacred dwelling place for truth in our generation. 12 Wisom is a Lady Sigs new.indd 12
L esson 1 Wisdom Is in the Construction Business Arch Scripture: Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars (Proverbs 9:1): Pinnacle Point: In the same way God used wisdom to build His house, so His people are called to uplift others. I D Introduction n Scripture, God presents wisdom as a female. This womanizing of a moral virtue suggests its intangible characteristics are similar in their nature, conduct, and motive to something tangible. In other words, Wisdom s base inclinations are like those of a woman: nurturing, developing, and preparing. This brings us to our foundational text: Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: (Proverbs 9:1). This Scripture sent me on a comprehensive search to discover the identity and significance of the seven pillars Wisdom diligently fashioned in her building program. 13 Wisom is a Lady Sigs new.indd 13
