Proverbs 9:1-18 1 Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. 2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. 3 She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, 4 Let all who are simple come to my house! To those who have no sense she says,

5 Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight. 7 Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. 8 Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.

9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 11 For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. 12 If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.

13 Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing. 14 She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, 15 calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, 16 Let all who are simple come to my house!

To those who have no sense she says, 17 Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious! 18 But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.

1) The Personification of a Wise Woman (vs. 1-6)

1 Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. 2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. 3 She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, 4 Let all who are simple come to my house! To those who have no sense she says, 5 Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight.

A) The Wise are Teachable (9:8b-9)

Rebuke the wise and they will love you. 9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

Teachability has everything to do with the way we process and respond to rebuke in our lives

2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The scriptures give us God-given permission and God-given words to hold one another accountable for our behaviour

The wise willingly accept the rebuke of others

The wise want to become more wise

B) The Wise are Prudent (14:8)

8 The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.

Proverbs 8:12 I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion."

2) The Personification of a Foolish Woman (vs. 13-18)

A) The Fool is a Simpleton (9:13)

Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing.

An idle Christian walk is dead Christianity

Proverbs 19:25 & 21:11 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke the discerning, and they will gain knowledge. When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; by paying attention to the wise they get knowledge.

B) The Fool is a Mocker (15:12)

Mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise.

The most extreme mocker is by definition an atheist

Psalm 14:1 The fool says in his heart, There is no God.

Colossians 1:18-21 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate. 20 Where is the wise person?

Colossians 1:18-21 Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

A Holy Spirit witness is the most convincing witness, even to the most committed atheist

C) The Fool is a Repeater (26:11)

As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.

"Not all folly is sin; some folly is sin; but all sin is folly

"Proverbs don't make you wise by themselves, you have to be wise to know how to use Proverbs fitly. - John Piper -

Proverbs 26:7 & 26:9 7 Like the useless legs of one who is lame is a proverb in the mouth of a fool. 9 Like a thornbush in a drunkard s hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.

Proverbs 2:6 "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."

Colossians 2:2-3 2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
