2 Lay Leader s Letter Summer Courage Samuel 17 and Mark 6:1-13 As we review and study these scriptures, we see that each of us have been given special gifts which we can use to serve God and God s world. Each of those gifts take a certain kind of courage to recognize and claim the truth. These scriptures invite us to find our courage, reminding us that we have not received the grace of God in vain. Knowing that we have received God s favor, now it is time for us to step forward in praise and action. In Paul s writing, he states that we may have to endure some hardships as we carry out God s will. We may not find it easy to forgive when we have been hurt by someone or something. The action may not set well with us, but God is asking us to carry out the task. Discipline with our actions! Nobody likes discipline! It takes courage and discipline to recognize and to claim our gifts and to serve God. God sends us messages to do His will in simple ways, or in acts of kindness and caring. Discipline ourselves to study God s Word. Courage to accept God s call to serve. God uses all ages and all kinds of people! Look at David! He was just a boy with a slingshot and five stones. They said he couldn t do it! Too young! He stepped up and slew the Giant. We each run into Giants in our life s journey. Maybe you are the new kid on the block and you cannot get accepted into the existing group of friends. The same thing happens to us a s adults. We have a circle of friends in the church. We need to invite newcomers into our circles. It takes courage to step out of our comfort zone and make new friends. Now is the time! Time to listen and learn. Time to dig deep and find courage and strength. Time to receive grace and let that grace grow in to faith and love. Time to share your GIFT from God! Young or old, we are all on God s Team! It takes courage to step up and give a gift from your inner self. But this is what Jesus is asking us to do. Step out of the boat! Walk on new water! Take new challenges! Is it scary? You bet! That s why we share our faith with one another! Take courage and invite your neighbor to church to share in God s love and grace! Remember, God has made you a special person in His image, and He has a plan for you. He has given you the gift of life. May your gift to Him be your life! You are a masterpiece! Ephesians 4:10 You are handpicked by God! John 15:16 Go with courage! Bill Wheeler
