January 6, 2013 Meditations We call that person who has lost his father, an orphan; and a widower, that man who has lost his wife. And that man who has known that immese unhappiness of losing a friend, by what name do we call him? Here every language holds its peace in impotence. - Joseph Roux, Meditations of a Parish Priest Readings to help you engage with God and worship, as Jesus said, in spirit and in truth. When you hear the first song begin, please come take a seat and continue preparing for worship by praying, reading the meditation quotes above, or singing along.

Before I Knew Words and music: Kirk Ward 2002 Kirk Ward Music CCLI #: 11107331 God is present with us in worship. Declaring this together turns our hearts and minds toward Him. Psalm 98:1-2,4-6 Please stand if able. 2 We gather in the presence of God Song of Gathering Before I knew what freedom was, Jesus set me free. With no control, a slave to sin, God was my enemy. But then He broke my rusty chains to share eternity. Before I knew what freedom was, Jesus set me free. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Jesus set me free! Before I knew what loving was, He showed His love for me. He knew me in my mother s womb, He knew my sinful tendencies. Adopted by His saving grace into His family. Before I knew what loving was, He showed His love for me. Welcome and Call to Worship Leader: Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! People: His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. Leader: Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, He showed His love for me! Before I knew what living was, He gave His life for me. I was defeated in my sins, death had the victory. Then all my guilt was placed on Him, That day on Calvary. Before I knew what living was, He gave His life for me. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, He gave His life for me! Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Jesus set me free! The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. People: Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Leader: Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! People: With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD!

Song of Praise All hail the power of Jesus Name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, Bring forth the royal diadem, Ye chosen seed of Israel s race, ye ransomed from the fall, Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, Let ev ry tribe and ev ry tongue to Him their hearts enthrall. Lift high the universal song, Lift high the universal song, O that, with yonder sacred throng, we at His feet may fall, Join in the everlasting song, Join in the everlasting song, All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Words: Edward Perronet, John Rippon Music: Oliver Holden Public domain A diadem is a crown worn as a sign of royalty. Scripture Reading As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! 1 Samuel 18:1-3 3

A time to be honest with God about our need for forgiveness. Please read together. We confess our sin and receive grace Confession of Sin King of Glory, You came to us as true peace in the midst of our warfare, as true freedom to release us from our bondage to sin, as true refuge from our unrest and affliction. Yet we have rebelled from Your authority, and negotiated with the enemy with our secret sins and proud skepticism. For our treason, You died; for our restoration, You rose again. Draw us close to You this week and renew our allegiance, increase our faith, amaze us with Your grace, and make us willing and able to follow You. Amen Silent Confession Acts 13:38-39 Assurance of Pardon Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. Rock of Ages Words: Augustus Toplady Music: Thomas Hastings Public domain 4 Song of Renewal Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee. Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Cleanse me from its guilt and power. Not the labors of my hands, Can fulfill Thy law s demands. Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone, Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling. Naked come to Thee for dress, Helpless, look to Thee for grace. Foul, I to the fountain fly, Wash me, Savior, or I die! While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyes shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee.

We respond to the grace received Passing of the Peace Community Life Prayers of the People The world: Hope International, a Christian microfinance organization The Northside: Youth Life Foundation, a tutoring ministry in Highland Park Our church: New Member Seminar, which concluded this morning Offering Today we are collecting an offering for the mercy fund in a tan basket in addition to the weekly general fund offering in the multi-colored basket. The mercy fund is used for financial assistance to those in need from our church and the Northside. Being set right with God enables us to participate in his work. The peace God made with us is extended to those around us. We see giving as a part of worship. If you feel the same way we invite you to participate. Song of Preparation Before all worlds began, You are the great I AM. Father, Spirit, and Son, Eternal Three-In-One. Fulfilled within Yourself, in need of no one else, Even though all things change, You still remain the same. You alone are God! So blind I had no clue. Oh, how I ran from You! Wickedness had me bound, Until You tracked me down. Your law revealed my sin, My corruption within, It drove me to Your cross, Where You paid my sin s cost. Faithful is our God! You Alone Are God Words and music: Shai Linne You spoke, it came to pass: a universe so vast. Most things no eye can see, Yet still bring You glory. Although all things are Yours, You made Yourself so poor. You left Your awesome throne, To seek and save Your own. Mighty is our God! Jesus, You died for me, and now abide in me. What can I give to You? Lord, help me live for You! Help me stay in Your word, Help me obey You, Lord. And when we finally meet, I ll cast my crown at Your feet. Holy is our God! Faithful is our God! Mighty is our God! You alone are God! 5

Our mind, body, and spirit are nourished with food that does not perish. Philippians 2:19-30 Isaiah 40:8 Today s sermon is given by Steve Constable, senior pastor at Stony Point Church (PCA). God feeds us with His Word Sermon Text 19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. 20 For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. 21 For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know Timothy s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. 23 I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, 24 and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. 25 I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need, 26 for he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious. 29 So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, 30 for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me. Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. People: Praise be to God! Sermon We encourage you to use this space to take notes or write questions. 6

Invitation to the Lord s Supper Words of Institution The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Leader: Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Parents who would like for their nursery-aged children to be prayed for during communion meal should pick them up at this time. 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 The Lord s Supper When you are ready, please come to one of the communion stations and circle it with others in a group of about 6. Step forward and take a cup and a piece of bread, and a communion distributor will pour wine or grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are located in the wooden boxes. If you would like, a communion distributor will pray for your children. There is a person at the back of the fellowship hall ready to pray with and for you, if desired. Communion at Northside is a patient, relaxed time. As others take communion please feel free to pray, sing along, or talk quietly with your neighbor. Song of Communion Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His Word; Just to rest upon His promise, just to know, Thus saith the Lord! Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I ve proved Him o er and o er Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more! O how sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to trust His cleansing blood; And in simple faith to plunge me Neath the healing, cleansing flood! chorus Yes, tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to cease; Just from Jesus simply taking Life and rest, and joy and peace. chorus I m so glad I learned to trust Thee, Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; And I know that You are with me, Will be with me to the end. chorus Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus Words: Louisa Stead Music: William Kirkpatrick Public domain 7

We go forth to love and serve God and neighbor. Salvation to the Lamb Words: Joseph Hart, alt. Justin Smith Music: Justin Smith 2005 Justin Smith Music The title of this song comes from Revelation 7:10, which depicts the great multitiude of God s redeemed people declaring Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb! The paschal lamb was the sacrifice at the first Passover. Here Jesus is spoken of as the perfect Paschal Lamb whose blood completely atones for sin. God sends us out refreshed Song of Rejoicing Poor sinner come, cast off thy fear, And raise thy drooping head. Come sing with all poor sinners here, Jesus, who once was dead. Salvation sing no word more meet To join to Jesus name. Let every thankful tongue repeat: Salvation to the Lamb, salvation to the Lamb! Saints from the garden to the cross Your conquering Lord pursue, Who, dearly to redeem your loss Groaned, bled, and died for you. Now reigns victorious over death, The glorious great I Am. Let every soul repeat with faith, Salvation to the Lamb, salvation to the Lamb! When we incurred the wrath of God, Alas! What could be worse? He came, and with His heart s own blood, Redeemed us from the curse. This Paschal Lamb, His blood can meet, And cleanse ye from each stain. Repeat, ye ransomed souls, repeat: Salvation to the Lamb, salvation to the Lamb! Salvation to the Lamb, salvation to the Lamb!
