Place all of your valuables in the trunk of your vehicle in order to avoid anyone who might be tempted to something the Lord would not want them to do. It is recommended that you do not give cash to anyone soliciting money. This only encourages repeat behavior and is somewhat fearful to those in the Adoration Chapel and the elderly. If you want to support the needy, then give to the St. Vincent de Paul Society where your generosity will surely help the poor and hungry. On The COVER A picture of the processional cross in Church. PARISH LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT MAISON DES AMIS During the season of Lent, we are called to PRAYER, FASTING, and ALMSGIVING. This year in an effort to truly live out God s call of service to the poor and needy, our parish has adopted for our Lenten project, Maison des Amis, House of Friends. Maison des Amis is a non-profit organization that operates a state-licensed group home for people with mental illness. Without Maison des Amis, the clients served there would be homeless, roaming the streets, and sleeping in doorways. The doors of Maison des Amis were opened to the Baton Rouge community on Thanksgiving Day in 1986. People with chronic mental illness become increasingly estranged and often have no place to live. Maison des Amis takes care of up to 46 adults whose mental illness has left them homeless in the Baton Rouge region. Maison des Amis is located on Convention Street and deeply appreciates the generosity of those who donate to their cause. Sickness should not condemn anyone to the streets. In what has become an organized and coordinated effort by our parishioners to reach out to the clients of Maison des Amis, there are many opportunities for service, including the cooking and serving of a meal, which can be coordinated. There are other needs such as painting and work day activities to participate in. You are kindly asked to make your donation by using the special envelopes for Maison des Amis located in Church. Items which you may bring to the Church Office at your convenience include travel size toiletries, such as: Soap Shampoo Mouthwash Deodorant Toothpaste Brand new EXTRA LONG Twin Bed Blankets New Playing Cards Checkers Games New Dominos Crochet Supplies Brand new EXTRA LONG Twin Bed Sheets Maison des Amis Home is desperately in need of new furniture and if you are so disposed to donating any item such as a new chair or a new small chest of drawers to be used next to the residents beds, you may call and speak to Deanie Smith at (225) 928-6207. I cannot tell you enough how anything we do for this project will be greatly appreciated by the neediest of the needy in Baton Rouge. Once again, this is an area where our Church Family at Mercy can make an incredible difference. I would want everyone to know that whatever we do for this cause, big or small, will truly be in the Lenten spirit of ALMSGIVING. It is what Jesus would want us to do for the very neediest. I was hungry, I was homeless, I was ill, I was forgotten and you came to me. BATON ROUGE, LA 3

Our Lady of Mercy has nourished the spiritual life of so many parishioners and those throughout the Diocese who come here. A Memorial Gift to our Traditions for Tomorrow Building Campaign is a wonderful way to acknowledge the lives of our beloved dead with a gift of loving generosity to the church that has been such a spiritual home. Called to Action DIVINE MERCY NOVENA LET US PRAY DIVINE MERCY NOVENA The Divine Mercy Novena began TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26 with 6:00 pm Mass followed by the sung Chaplet and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and continues for nine Tuesdays in preparation for the Feast of Divine Mercy. St. Faustina Kowalska, a simple Polish nun who in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary recording the revelations she received about God s mercy. The message is nothing new for Catholics, but is a reminder of what the Church has always taught through Scripture and Tradition: that God is merciful and forgiving and that we too must show mercy and forgiveness. In the Divine Mercy devotion, the message takes on a powerful new focus, calling people to a deeper understanding that God s love is unlimited and available to everyone especially the greatest of sinners. The message of Divine Mercy is that God loves us all of us no matter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others, sharing His joy. The devotional practices revealed through St. Faustina were given to us as vessels of mercy through which God s love can be poured out upon the whole world. If you are homebound or cannot attend, please pray the novena at home with us. Tune in to WPYR 1380AM for a live broadcast of the novena or listen online at www.brcatholicradio.com. Cor ad Cor Loquitur - Heart speaks to heart. The Heart of Christ speaks to the heart of man - to your heart - if you will open the door and listen to Him. Divine Mercy Novena Nine Tuesdays through April 23rd 6:00 pm Mass followed by sung Chaplet and Benediction All are welcome! BATON ROUGE, LA 5

PARISH LIFE Dear Parishioners, Lent is quickly approaching and the time to contemplate our Lenten sacrifice and penance is already before us. I want to invite everyone to join our parish family as we pray the sung Divine Mercy Chaplet every Tuesday evening beginning February 26th. It is such a beautifully moving prayer experience to hear voices of so many faithful rising to heaven and imploring the mercy of God upon us for our sins and the sins of the whole world. I also encourage attendance at daily Mass whenever possible. Another beautiful Lenten exercise is committing to an hour of Eucharistic Adoration in the Adoration Chapel. The Chapel coordinator, Ms. Michelle Schroeder, for whom I have so much respect for her dedication to the Chapel, has expressed the desperate need for committed adorers in the early morning hours. Please contact Michelle at (225) 229-1930 to sign-up for an hour. I want to thank all those who have come forward to take an hour with the Lord. I would ask that parishioners consider committing to any remaining early morning hours especially during Lent. I can think of nothing more beautiful for a Lenten sacrifice. There is a great spiritual maturity and a deep spirituality rooted in Holy Mother Church here at Mercy. I pray for God s outpouring of grace upon all of us during Lent as we journey to greater intimacy and communion with the Lord. May these 40 days help us to meditate on Jesus great love for us in giving Himself on the cross and may He give us strength to carry our crosses in union with Him. Fr. Cleo Our Lady of Mercy, pray for us! If there is no sacrifice, there will be no holiness. You must deny yourself and take up your cross before you are able to follow Jesus. Self-denial is the prerequisite of holiness. - Cardinal Van Thuan 10 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
