TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 16, 2016 Embracing our Faith and our Future We have begun our faith formation for the year. Your Franciscan priests believe in the power of the Sacraments to transform each person and incorporate us into the Body of Christ. The Sacraments are encounters with our Triune God and are celebrated in the community of the faithful. At Our Lady of Grace we celebrate the Sacraments of initiation with the community during our Sunday liturgies. It is during the Mass, especially when the community is gathered on the day of the resurrection, that we as a community of believers unite in the love of God in Jesus Christ. During Mass we are empowered to be the Body of Christ in our world today. Fr. Paul and myself will be involved with all children preparing for Sacraments. Your Franciscans are presenting and participating in the Alpha Youth Series for those preparing for Confirmation and will be part of the six family gatherings for those preparing for first communion. On October 2, 2016 Fr. Paul and myself began the Alpha Program for our Confirmation youth. Last weekend Fr. Paul, Br. Chris, and myself participated in the Youth Rally with almost 1000 youth. Next weekend I will be with our Families preparing for First Communion. While Our Lady of Grace had the highest involvement of clergy at the Youth Rally we had one of the lowest involvement of youth. On December 1 we will begin Alpha for our Parish. All are welcome so invite your neighbors and friends to join us on Thursdays at 6pm. I invite you to participate as many nights as possible. May we seek to renew the fire of our faith. I encourage you to join us on the Parish Retreat February 24-26. Space is limited so please make your reservation early. The suggested donation for the weekend will be approximately $200.00. Peace, Fr. Tom Pilgrimage to the Cathedral to enter the Mercy Door On Saturday, November 5 we will make a pilgrimage to our Cathedral to enter the Mercy Door. Our youth will be traveling on Bart leaving at 10am. We will meet for lunch, enter the Mercy Door, have Mass, and a tour. Please contact the office if you would like to join us. GOSPEL FOR 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (OCTOBER 23RD) LUKE 18:9-14 Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity -- greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income. But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, O God, be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted. 1

HIGH SCHOOL TEENS GOT QUESTIONS? ALPHA -October 16th! Come Sunday Evenings, share a Meal, watch an exciting Video, join small groups to discuss the videos and faith in God, and have fun and meet new Friends!!! Jesus says; Whoever holds to my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me; and whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I shall love him and REVEAL MYSELF TO HIM (Jn 14:21). As we learn our faith, we begin by learning the COMMANDMENTS, but too often we fail to learn that Faith in God is much more than following commandments and rules. Our religion is ideally A RESPONSE TO AN ECOUNTER WITH GOD. This is the hope and prayer of our parish for all those who attend Alpha this year; to have an experience of God that helps us to follow God and practice our Faith, not out of duty, but because of LOVE and in JOY! Join Fr. Tom, Fr. Paul, Robyn, Deacon Nels and others leading our Alpha program every Sunday Night; MEETING NEXT ON OCTOBER 16, at 6-8PM in Stack Center. Invite your friends! All are welcome! HOW DOES YOUR FAITH GROW? Adult Confirmation Group forming now! If you have been baptized and received First Communion, but would like to complete your initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation, please join us for one of our information gatherings. Our Lady of Grace (Stack Center) Sunday, October 16th at 1:00pm Wednesday, October 19th at 7:00pm Robyn Lang 510-582-9266, ffc@olgcv.org CATHOLIC VOICE ANNUAL APPEAL This month is our annual appeal for The Catholic Voice. Your donation helps our Parish offset its payment for this important communication ministry. The Voice is the only regular source of Catholic news and information delivered to all parishioners in the Diocese. Please be generous in your support our Parish pays $707.00 each month for this subscription. Checks should be made payable to Our Lady of Grace. Envelopes are in the pews. ATTENTION PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS Dr. Doreen Jones will be speaking on Teaching Faith at An Appropriate Age Level for parents of children in grades 4-6 on Monday, October 17th at 7:00pm in Stack Center. All parents and grandparents are welcome to attend this informative Parent Information Night. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE The Knights of Columbus will be here next weekend to conduct a Tootsie Roll Drive for people with Intellectual Disabilities. The Knights offer Tootsie Rolls free or in exchange for donations. The donations collected by Council 3518 provide Christmas gifts to people with Intellectual Disabilities in the SPRED program. These individuals receive disability checks that are just enough to pay for their Board and Care in local facilities; so our gifts of religious pictures, clothing and hygiene supplies enhance their faith, their lives and their Christmas. Please find it in your hearts the weekend of October 22nd -23rd to donate when you see the Knights at the doors of the church. Thank you in advance. The Lord IS CALLING You!!?? MEN S FAITH SHARING All men of the parish are invited to join Our Men s Faith Share and Bible Study every TUESDAY evening from 7 8:15PM in the Parish office. Each week Fr.
