Express Redemption 418 Lake Street, Wilson Monday thru Friday 10 5 Saturday 9 4 St. John s has set up an account with Express Redemption for you to return your bottles and cans. They are giving us 6 cents for each bottle/can returned. Just tell them that your money is to go to St. John s and sign the account slip. It s that easy! Your Priest Perspective. Recently, the vestry has been discerning about ways we can most effectively minister in our community, including what ministries God may be calling us to do. As part of that discernment, I find it interesting to look at some demographic information about our local community. These statistics are compiled from the U.S. Census information and can be found on http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/studying-your-congregation-andcommunity. They cover the area within a three-mile radius of St John s, bounded on the north by Lake Ontario, the west by a line north and south of the middle of Hopkins Beach, on the east by a line about three miles onto Wilson-Burt Road and to the south by Braley Road. Two age groups will see growth. One is in young families (this means those with children who are currently infants, toddlers and preschoolers); the other is in retirement-age people. For example, by 2021, we will see a 5 percent increase of kindergarten through fourthgrade children (but a decline in older children and teens). In the same period we are expected to see about a 7 percent increase in retirees. We will also see slight increases in single adults (either never married, divorced or widowed). In terms of interests, our community considers the following types of programming to be important to them: adult social activities, opportunities for volunteering in the community, worship services (both contemporary and traditional), spiritual discussion groups, cultural activities and holiday programs, retiree activities, family activities and crises support groups. The statistics suggest a few things to me. The first is that, over the next few years, there may be unmet needs in our community for activities for parents with very small children and for retirees, especially those who are single. The second is that our community finds worship and spiritual topics important. We offer a very inclusive and welcoming faith that may be refreshing. The third is that we may also want to seek to go a little beyond the three-mile radius of the study if we want to attract new folks. Order Your Bouquet Today Only $8.00 St. John s will receive a percentage of each sale! Please see Jennifer Farwell-Puskas to order. We have a strong foundation from which to build at St John s. We are welcoming of new people. Many folks already know of us from our many dinners and our Rummage Sale. We also have a heart for outreach and we are generous with our giving. It will be exciting to see where God is calling us next. Randi+

Rev. Randi s Celebration By Priscilla Moot & Sharon Rhodes On Saturday, January 14th St. John's and St. Andrew's joined together for "The Renewal of Ministry with the Welcoming of our new rector, Rev. Randi Hicks Rowe". It was a bright and chilling morning with no snow, making travel easier. Many gathered from both churches and clergy from the Deanery with our Bishop William Franklin officiating. The Gospel Groove Band gathered the community of people with the Prelude, People Get Ready lifting the roof and the spirits of all. Both congregations, participated in the services with Deacon Pete, acolytes, the Wardens escorting Rev. Randi in and presenting the Lectern Bible. The children presented a children's Bible, readers, a pitcher of water for the Renewal of Baptismal Vows was presented by a congregation member, the Vestries presented a symbol of prayer (new altar book & book of prayers), and a stole and stock of oil for healing was presented by parishioners. Representatives of the congregation brought the people's offerings of bread and the wine and communion set. Bishop William Franklin reminded us this was not just the "Installation of Rev. Randi", but the Renewal of our Ministry with Rev. Randi. It was a wonderful Celebration. We would like to add a big "thank you", to everyone who helped in any way with Rev. Randi's reception following the service on January 14th. The refreshments were delicious and the table decorations beautiful. It was so nice to work with Kay and all her helpers at St. Andrew's. Working together as a team was a wonderful experience; all of you did a great job and it was truly appreciated. Happy Birthday To. Jeff & Beth Pyskaty March 26 Children s Ash Wednesday Service This year, we will be doing a Children s Ash Wednesday service at St John s at the end of the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. The service will begin at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary and last about a half an hour. Parents should accompany their children. The service will include imposition of ashes and discussion about what Lent means, but will have less stark language than the service in the Book of Common Prayer. The service is geared toward children younger than 12; however, anyone who wants to attend this service will be welcome. We will also be inviting Lutheran and Methodist churches in Wilson.
Vestry Retreat Highlights Vestry held a retreat on Saturday, January 21st at the home of Lois Carter. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss where we see St. John s in ten years and what paths we are going to create getting there. We broke into two groups: Resources & Outreach. We brainstormed and discussed what we do well and what we think we do well and how we need to bend and change as other things change that impacts St. John s. You will see and hear more in the upcoming months. The Doors Are Always Open Where the Sidewalk Ends Some photos from Rev.
