A Biblical Journey April 11-26 2018 A Message from Rev. Will Sparks Israel: the land of the Bible, the land of our ancestors in the faith, the land of Jesus and his first followers, the birthplace of our faith, a land of dispute, conflict and the homeland of many peoples and many faiths. It has drawn pilgrims for thousands of years. After Easter 2018, Treena and I will be hosting a trip to the Holy Land through a non-profit tour organization, Christian Journeys. The purpose of the trip is to experience firsthand the land of the Bible, and the life of people living in Israel/Palestine. Sixteen days of travel and experience, we will have time to linger and explore, from Bethlehem in the West Bank and the ancient streets of Jerusalem to the waves on the Sea of Galilee. This is a once in a lifetime trip. We want to put this out to our Highlands community first. If spaces remain in the fall, we will cast our net wider. If you have longed to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, or if this invitation sparks an interest in you, contact Will or Treena. Information is available on the action table or directly from Will and Treena. Will Sparks: will.sparks@highlandsunited.org Cell: 778-968-7718 or Treena Duncan: treenad@telus.net 604-312-4909

A Message from our Flea Market Team: The annual Flea Market will be held, as usual, on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. Mark the date in your calendar, Saturday, October 14 th, so you can come and join in the fun! The faithful crew of sorters will be taking a break during July so no donation drop-offs until mid-august please. Thank you to everyone who contributes items to this giant venture and especially to those who meet on Tuesday mornings (and at other times) to sort and price things. We couldn't manage without you!

Heather Soderling will be our gust conductor this Sunday, July 9 th Welcome Heather!

If you have a favourite paint brush for cutting in (and that s your thing!) then bring it with you. Sign up at the Action Table or speak to Betty Chapin. Thanks! Give us Your Old Tin Cans! The Summer Staff would like to have some of your (clean) tin cans any size will do. The kids will be creating a trash-to-treasure project in the Breathe It In Camp. Donations can be dropped off in the summer staff office (located in the 200 wing beside the nursery!) Cans will be collected until July 16 th. The summer program is also looking for their annual supply of camp snacks! Home-baking (nut free) is welcome, along with non-perishable items such as rice crackers, goldfish crackers, cheese, popsicles, and other camp favorites! COMMUNITY EVENTS A Message from First United Church in Vancouver s Downtown Eastside Hello friends, CURRENT NEEDS (We are collecting items for Summer) -Hats-Sunglasses-Summer clothes & T-shirts -Sunscreen/after Sun Lotion-Bottled water (and the kitchen needs more forks!) Please contact Heidi Morgan at hmorgan@firstunited.ca or by calling 604-681-8365 ext 116. Many thanks! ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITY! We have a team of listeners serving an important ministry here at First United. A special kind of volunteer whose sole role is to engage in conversation with community members. No advice need be given and in fact it is most wholesome when a community member can direct the conversation and someone just be present and listen. This is a great role for retired ministers or anyone with a therapeutic background. We would love to hear from you if this strikes a chord in your heart. You can contact Heidi Morgan at 604-681-8365 ext 116 or by emailing hmorgan@firstunited.ca GIFT IN KIND DRIVES Did you know that we are often low on Women s underwear and Poligrip for denture wearers? Also, that contributions of nonperishable food items are fewer in the summer time? Are you having a party and want to add a charitable element? Why not ask everyone to bring underwear (new) or a specific canned protein item and donate them to us? If this resonates with you, please get in touch with Heidi Morgan at hmorgan@firstunited.ca or by calling 604-681-8365 ext 116. We have lots of ideas and would love to hear from you!
