BOOT CAMP Loved, Pursued and Not Alone 1 John 4:1-16, page 1230-1231 (in the Bible located in the seat back pocket) Chapter 1 Justification: The moment when a person acknowledges their need for Jesus and begins following Him resulting in freedom from the penalty of sin. Sanctification: The lifelong transformation of a person into Christlikeness resulting in the freedom from the power of sin. Chapter 2 Jesus is our Substitute & Advocate: God s love is revealed in this way, suffering the loss of well being for the sake of another. Jesus is BIG: Our temptation is to make Him small and the world big, to use God instead of trust God. Warning: Watch out for anything that makes Jesus small by making ourselves BIG. Chapter 3 Behold/take great astonishment about the unparalleled experience that we are loved by God: A biblical basis for the doctrine of the security of the believer. (cf. John 6:35-40; 10:1ff; Eph. 2:5,8; 5:1) 1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. It s the love of God that determines who we are now. Love for others is the result/outgrowth of our relationship with Christ. Love for others is not the basis of salvation, but another evidence of it. The worst thing God could do for most Christians is to answer their selfish prayers!...the most valuable aspect of prayer is that the believer has spent time with God resulting in trusting God. 2 Next Steps 1 John 4: 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. How does this verse impact where you are in your present season of life? Other references to the indwelling Father (cf. John 14:23; 2 Cor. 6:16). The NT also emphasizes (1) the indwelling Son (cf. Matt. 28:20; Col. 1:27) and (2) the indwelling Holy Spirit (cf. Rom. 8:9; 1 John 4:13). The Spirit and the Son are closely identified (cf. Rom 8:9; 2 Cor. 3:17; Gal. 4:6; Phil. 1:19; 1 Pet. 1:11). Slowly read the following verses: John 14:23 Jesus replied, Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 2 Corinthians 6:16 For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people Galatians 4:6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba, Father. Colossians 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 1 John 4:13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. What is God communicating to you through the truths of these verses? Read and memorize 1 John 4:4 1 John 4:10-11 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another Typically religion is mankind seeking God, but Christianity is God seeking fallen mankind! The wonderful truth is not our love for God, but His love for us. He has sought us through our sin and self, our rebellion and pride. The glorious truth of Christianity is that God loves fallen mankind and has initiated and maintained a life-changing contact. HALF WAY TO OUR GOAL...50 MORE SPONSORS NEEDED FOR AFE In a small village in a remote area of Central Asia, a school has started it s school year, March December 2014. Last year the school had 110 students. This is in large part to your very generous donations that provide extra food, clothing and supplies to these families. Many parents wouldn t allow their children to continue in the school, free though it is, insisting that the children stay home to tend goats or help with chores. However, with an incentive (primarily food products because it is a very poor area) these children now have the opportunity to learn. The commitment is for one school year (10 months). You can contribute month by month, or donate up front for the whole school year. The cost is $10 per month or $100 total. If you want to know more about the program please contact denise@newcovchurch.org or zach@newcovchurch.org. If you would like to sponsor, please fill out the form below.
