Volume 25 Number 2 February 2017 Eastern Shore Emmaus A Message From Our Community Lay Director To our Emmaus Family In reading recently in Colossians I came across a very interesting verse in Chapter 3: 23 as follows: February Dates to Remember Eastern Shore Community Gathering February 11, 2017 at Cheriton Baptist Church, 21291 S. Bayside Rd., Cheriton, Va. 23316. Covered dish dinner at 5:30 p.m. Praise and Worship at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Shore Board Meeting February 27, 2017 at Woodberry UMC, Gargatha, VA. at 7:00 P.M. Eastern Shore Chrysalis Board Meeting No meeting in February. Newsletter articles DUE for March s Walk Way February, 20, 2017. PLEASE DON T BE LATE!!! Please send articles in MSWord Document! (TY) Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. I chose this verse to bring to your attention a growing concern that we have within the Eastern Shore Emmaus. We have several men and women that have teamed several times. Many have teamed 10+ times. They do this because they have truly enjoyed the blessings of watching pilgrims grow and get excited about serving God in their home churches. The problem is that many are getting burned out and we are having Teams that do not have a full complement of Teamers. The question that I have to ask you is, are you working for the Lord and answering His call to serve? That answer can only be answered by you. Please understand that we need you to make these Walks the best they can be. If you have never teamed, know that we will help you in any situation. If you have teamed before, you know the joy that it brings to you and to God. Please answer the call if you feel that God is calling. Your brother in Christ, Rex Mayfield, Community Lay Director
Page 2 A Message From Our Spiritual Director Then Jesus said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Matthew 9:37-38 Any Christian who has spent much time at all in the church has seen what is called the 80/20 principle at work. That principle holds that 80% of the work and ministry done in and through the church is done by 20% of the people of the church. When this ratio reaches critical mass, I often pray as Jesus taught me: Lord, send us more laborers! It doesn t take long for the 20% to burn out. For me, part of the blessed live of following Christ is the life of service. Some of my richest blessings have come from serving with my fellow servants on Emmaus teams. I am saddened when that servant spirit is dampened or diminished. Sadly, that is happening far too often than I would like. Recently, we have experienced difficulty fielding a full team for Emmaus weekends. A couple of years ago, I served on one of those teams. The community filled in admirably, but they shouldn t have to. Is it too much to ask that we put together a full team, so that neither teamers nor the community workers experience burnout? At those times, I feel we are experiencing more of a 90/10 principle than 80/20. With an Emmaus community of over 2,000 strong, why are we having so much trouble fielding teams? I understand that life is busy. I get that. But if more people feel called to team, that eases the burden of the few who team over and over again. It spreads the joy of serving over a much broader representation of the entire community. Will you join me in praying as Jesus asked us to pray that the Lord will send out laborers into his harvest? Will you pray also with an ear to hear that He may be calling you to labor in his harvest? The blessings far outweigh the demands of teaming. Pray. You will be glad that you did. Page 3 Eastern Shore Chrysalis Fly With Christ! We as a Chrysalis board have been seeking God s wisdom in regards to how best to serve Him and our youth. Our time, energies, and efforts should be towards that of God; to honor and glorify Him in all things. We as a board are going to attend the Tidewater Chrysalis Gathering on February 18th at 5:30. This Gathering will be held at Community UMC (1072 Old Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA). At this time we are exploring the idea of possibly working with the Tidewater community by sending our youth on their flights. This would give us the opportunity to build our youth base and begin to rebuild our community again. Anyone interested in going to the Gathering with us would be greatly welcomed. We will not be having a board meeting in February but will meet again on Tuesday, March 28th. As always, all are invited to attend our board meetings to share any ideas or to contribute in any other way. I can be contacted at 757-894-3508 for further information. Please continue to pray or our Chrysalis community as we seek God s will. Fly With Christ Denise Johnson Chrysalis Board

Page 5 SPONSORSHIP CORNER! Our spring walks are fast approaching and is time to be thinking of people who could walk. If you have sponsored someone recently make sure you touch base with them to see if they have someone that is tugging on their heart. They may need some pointers on sponsoring someone themselves! De Colores John Sutton Prayer Chain Brothers And Sisters In Christ, As we enter February; the month of love, we are reminded of the many expression of that emotion. Flowers, cards, candy, and sweet words are all way that we show our love to one another. As Christians we know that the ultimate display of love was Jesus Christ being sent to suffer and die for the sins of all mankind so that we may be set free and have eternal life with him. That is God s love for us. How do we show our love for one another? One way is through prayer. Prayer, in my opinion is one of the greatest gifts, and expressions of selfless love that we can show to one another. The reassurance to someone else in their time of need that you are praying for whatever circumstance that they re facing is a priceless act of love. With that in mind about prayer, I would like to invite you to join the Emmaus Prayer Team. If you would like to receive E-mails or have a prayer request to be lifted up by the Community please E- mail EmmausPrayerTeam@Gmail.com or call 757-894- 5858.
