TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH FARIBAULT MINNESOTA THE ORDER OF THE DIVINE SERVICE SETTING IV FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT Sunday, 8:00 AM The Sacrament Of The Altar is celebrated at the 5:30 PM & 8:00 AM services in the confidence that our Lord gives us His very body and blood to eat and drink in, with and under the bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our union with Him and one another. As we trust His words and repent of all sin, we proclaim His death until He returns. Because this act is a confession of our faith, Close Communion is practiced at Trinity. Anyone who is not yet instructed, in doubt, or holds a differing confession and yet desires to receive the Sacrament, is asked first to speak with a Pastor or Worship Assistant. Peace and Joy! The individual cups in the center of the tray (containing the amber color liquid) are prepared for those with concerns for alcohol consumption. HYMN TO OPEN Once He Came in Blessing LSB 333 Please stand INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.
Divine Service IV 2 ABSOLUTION P Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. KYRIE SALUTATION P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. COLLECT OF THE DAY P Together, let us pray. C Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come and help us by Your might, that the sins which weigh us down may be quickly lifted by Your grace and mercy; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen O ANTIPHON O Emmanuel O Emmanuel, our king and our Lord, the anointed for the nations and their Savior:* Come and save us, O Lord our God. FIRST READING Daniel 9:24-27 P A reading from Daniel, the ninth chapter. 24 Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. 25 Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are
Divine Service IV 3 decreed. 27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE READING Hebrews 10:5-10 P The Epistle is from Hebrews, the tenth chapter. 5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7 Then I said, Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book. 8 When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt Please stand offerings and sin offerings (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, Behold, I have come to do your will. He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSPEL John 1:35-42 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the first chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, Behold, the Lamb of God! 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, What are you seeking? And they said to him, Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying? 39 He said to them, Come and you will see. So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas (which means Peter). P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.
Divine Service IV 4 O ANTIPHON O Emmanuel O Emmanuel, our king and our Lord, the anointed for the nations and their Savior:* Come and save us, O Lord our God. HYMN OF THE DAY Christ, the Word of God Incarnate LSB 540 SERMON Jesus Is the Christ, the Messiah (Text: John 1:40-41) The Rev. Dr. Armand J. Boehme (The Chrismon is hung on the tree) CHI RHO/XP All: This symbol is another sacred monogram which contains the first two Greek letters of the word Christ. Christ is a title that has become part of Jesus' name. The name Christ means the Messiah God told His Old Testament people would come and fulfill the Old Testament prophecies. This prophesied Christ or Messiah would serve in three offices - that of Prophet, Priest, and King. Jesus served in all three of these offices and fulfilled them. In this title we, God's New Testament believers, see our unity with God's Old Testament believers for we both believe in the same Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior, from sin prophesied in the Old Testament and born in a Bethlehem manger. Please stand NICENE CREED (See back page of hymnal)
Divine Service IV 5 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Each intercession ends with the words, to which the congregation responds, P Lord in Your mercy C Hear our prayer P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. TITHES AND OFFERING O Come, All Ye Faithful ~Emily Zoubek, Solo (Please fill out Friendship Pads to be collected by Ushers following the Offering.) Please stand PREFACE P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:
