The system of arrangement of the source repository has been preserved in microfilm reels. Historical Note: The Jewish Community in Łódź emerged in 1806, and consisted of a Council, a Board and Rabbinate. The members of elective organs represented all Jewish political orientations in Łódź. The community tasks were to pass resolutions and to run a budget. Main expenses were for keeping synagogues, institutions of a ritual character such as: ritual baths (mikwe) and slaughter houses, maintaining of cemeteries, management of schools, as well as a broadly developed social welfare network, running of the care facilities of elderly people, orphanages for children, distribution of allowances for the poorest members of the community and a financial support for hospitals. The communities were also in charge of the registration of births, marriages, and deaths. The community stopped operating on September 8, 1939 after the German occupation of Lodz making it part of the Warthegau, which in turn was annexed to the Reich.
