ST. CATHARINE S PARISH 523 Western Highway Blauvelt, New York 10913 Rev. Msgr. Francis J. McAree, S.T.D. Pastor WORLD DAY OF THE SICK 2019

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2019 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOD S SUMMONS Confronted with God s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Isaiah answered, Here I am, send me. We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the Gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to accept your call to be God s messenger? Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Here I am, I said, send me! Isaiah 6:8 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Isaiah is called to be a messenger for the Lord and responds, Send me! (Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8) Psalm In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord (Psalm 138). Second Reading Paul reminds us of the gospel he preached through which we are saved, if we believe it (1 Corinthians 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]). Gospel Jesus directs Simon to take his boat into deep water for a miraculous catch of fish. (Luke 5:1-11). THE 2019 CARDINAL S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL No one is more generous to us than God. God has given us life; He has blessed us with the gift of faith; He has given us this world to be our home; and He has sent His Son to be our Savior. In return, God expects us to be generous: with our love, with our time, with our talents, and with our resources. By now, all of our registered parishioners should have received a letter from Cardinal Dolan asking for your support of the vital ministries, programs, and services provided through The Appeal each year. If you have not received a letter, it may indicate that your household is not currently registered with our Parish. Please contact our Parish Office to make sure you are properly registered. Please join your fellow parishioners, prayerfully consider your contribution, and make your gift to the Cardinal s Appeal today. You can pledge your gift now and make payments in the coming months. You may also make your donation online at www.cardinalsappeal.org. We are off to a wonderful start. Our 2019 goal, set by the Archdiocese, is $131,000. We have already received $17,220 in pledges. Thank you. PARISH EVALUATIONS This year, Monsignor McAree will be completing his first six-year term as Pastor of St. Catharine of Alexandria Church. In keeping with the Archdiocesan policy, an evaluation of the Parish has begun. Parishioners and Staff who wish to do so may write letters with their own comments about our Parish and the Pastoral Leadership of the Parish. Please address your letters to The Office of Priest Personnel Archdiocese of New York 1011 First Avenue New York, New York 10022 If you would prefer, you may email your comments to priestpersonnel@archny.org. Letters must be received no later than February 15, 2019. Any correspondence received after the deadline will not be included in the evaluation process. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION PETER S PENCE A little mercy makes the world less cold and more just. Pope Francis Today s Peter s Pence Collection supports the Pope s philanthropy by giving the Holy Father the means to respond with emergency assistance to those who are suffering as a result of war, oppression, natural disaster, and disease. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters with promptness, love, and compassion to God s people will never feel alone in their time of misfortune.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2019 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The phrase, fishers of men, is one of the most wellknown lines in the entire New Testament, and the most important metaphor for evangelism. The image probably had an important role in the adoption of the Ichthys (see above) as a symbol of early Christianity. The reference has also often been moved from the disciples to Jesus, with Him being called the fisher of men. The image of Jesus as a fisherman is second only to that of Jesus as a shepherd. The translation fishers of men is well-known but not wholly accurate. In Greek, it is halieis anthropon, but modern scholars realize that anthropon does not just refer to men, but to all of humanity. The basic interpretation of the metaphor as referring to the disciples working to catch souls for Jesus as they had previously caught fish is universally agreed upon. The term follow me refers to following as a disciple would a Rabbi. Any good Rabbi or Teacher would have had a group of disciples around him learning and doing tasks for their Master. Jesus statement is unusual as it invites the disciples to take an active part in His ministry. While both Greek and Jewish religious leaders were traditionally surrounded by a group of disciples, it was more common for the disciples to search out a Teacher, and for a Teacher to express indifference to their followers. This verse clearly depicts Jesus actively recruiting His followers. WORLD DAY OF THE SICK FEAST DAY OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES FEBRUARY 11 th February 11 th is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes, and on this day, we also observe the World Day of the Sick, an observation started by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1993 as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. He chose the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes as many pilgrims visit the sanctuary in France each year in hopes of physical and spiritual healing. God performed innumerable physical cures and spiritual healing here through Mary s intercession. On February 11, 1858, a poor, 14 year-old shepherd girl named Bernadette Soubirous was collecting firewood near Lourdes, France. She saw a bright light, and the Blessed Mother appeared before her in a natural hollow of rock in a cave. Mary appeared with a youthful face, and she wore a white garment with a blue belt and carried a rosary. Over the course of 18 appearances, she identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. Mary told Bernadette to drink from a spring within the cave and to tell Church authorities to build a shrine on the site. Since those appearances, more than 200 million pilgrims have visited Lourdes, many reporting cures from the miraculous spring. On this day, people around the world take time to pray for the sick and for those who work very hard to alleviate the sufferings of the sick. The World Day of the Sick is a special time dedicated to remembering and to praying for those suffering any illness and also for their families. We pray for God s tender mercy and loving kindness upon all of our loved ones who have experienced serious health issues. We also pray for all those who assist and care for the sick that God may continue to give them patience, compassion, strength and courage. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. St. Catharine of Alexandria, pray for us. EMERGENCY WINTER COAT DRIVE THANK YOU S We thank our wonderful parishioners for giving so generously to our recent Emergency Winter Coat Drive. With your generosity, we were able to send more than 150 warm winter coats and many, many more hats, scarves and gloves to the students at Gotham Collaborative High School in the Bronx. What a beautiful outpouring of love and support! Special thanks to our 7 th Grade PREP students who worked very hard to pack everything up for delivery to the School. How blessed we are to be able to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need. Pope Francis PRAYER TO ST. VALENTINE OF ROME PATRON SAINT OF LOVE Dear Saint and Glorious Martyr, Teach us to love unselfishly and to find great joy in giving. Enable all true loves to bring out the best in each other. Let them love each other in God and, in God, each other. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
