OCTOBER 16, 2011 PAGE 3 INTRODUCING THE SERRA CLUB OF CLEVELAND The Serra Club is an organization of lay Catholics that foster, promote, and affirm vocations to the priesthood and vowed religious life in the Catholic Church. There are presently 1,100 Serra clubs in 46 countries with a growing membership of more than 19,000 men and women. Serra Club of Cleveland-East meets at the Ursuline Educational Center in Pepper Pike, Ohio, on the second and fourth Monday evenings of each month. Fr. Dave Ireland, our pastor, is the Chaplain of this organization. While the club is involved in many varying activities on the part of vocations, the meetings at Ursuline are designed so that members gather for prayer, a meal, and a very interesting speaker series which has included bishops, priests, nuns, college professors, and experts on topics of current interest. Serra members will be here next week after Masses to discuss their organization with interested parishioners. SERRAN PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS O God, Who wills not the death of a sinner but rather that he be converted and live grant we beseech You through the intercession of the Blessed Mary ever Virgin Saint Joseph, her spouse, Blessed Junipero Serra, and all the saints an increase of laborers for Your Church, fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls through the same Jesus Christ Your Son Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Chordas, M.A. 3-pak Video Night Wednesday, October 26 7 p.m. ~ Church Hall Our Marian Movement of Priests Cenacle of Prayer invites YOU, our parishioners, to view three of Bob & Penny Lord s beautiful videos honoring our Blessed Mother. In the first video, we ll travel with Bob and Penny through France as they trace the footsteps of one of The greatest of all devotees of Our Lady, Saint Louis de Montfort, who walked over 200 miles to Paris to study for the priesthood and then traveled 1,000 miles to Rome at the turn of the Eighteenth Century for an audience with Pope Clement XI, who blessed him and gave him the title of Missionary Apostolic. During his 16 years as a priest, his spiritual mission was to fight heresies, preach missions and convert sinners, all to Jesus through Mary. In the second video, we ll join Bob and Penny at Rue de Bac in Paris where Saint Catherine Laboure rested her hands on the lap of Our Blessed Mother during a 2-hour midnight conversation with her in 1830. During her nine-month novitiate, Catherine experienced visions of Our Lord in front of the tabernacle every time she entered the convent chapel of the Sisters of Charity. We ll also visit the Basilica of S. Andrea della Fratte in Rome where one of the greatest of all Miraculous Medal miracles occurred in 1842. Finally, we ll arrive at the stunning Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, high in the French Alps, where Melanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, two young cow herders, beheld Our Lady crying crystalline tears in 1846. By 1850 over 200 miracles had occurred at LaSalette. Please come and enjoy these great videos. Door prizes and a limited number of Miraculous Medals from Rue de Bac will be given out. Refreshments included. Next video night: November 14, when we travel to Lourdes, France; Beauraing and Banneaux, Belgium. Holy water from all 3 shrines will be distributed to attendees. May we always strive to be generous. Thank you for your continued generosity to your parish. Father Ireland from the voices of the children I shared chalk with my friends. Helping mom when she was sick. I helped my godmother get ready for her wedding. Shared cake decorating tools at cake decorating class. Thank you children for sharing these with us. Father Ireland FAMILY PERSPECTIVES... Differences are inevitable in family life. But don t be like the Pharisees in today s gospel who were trying to trap Jesus. They didn t care about the truth. They just wanted to win! To be right! Peace can exist only when we pursue the truth with love.

OCTOBER 16, 2011 PAGE 5 PRINCIPAL S CORNER... Two more weeks left in October two weeks left in our first grading period... October 28,SHJA students will have one quarter of the school year completed. Grades are important... but so is the Catholicity that is growing weekly. The prayer services and Masses and daily religion lessons contribute to molding our students into faith-filled children of God. We continue to pray to Mary and to respect each other through good words and deeds. I share with you another quote from Pope John Paul II regarding the sanctity of life and the evil of abortion: The promotion of the culture of life should be the highest priority in our societies If the right to life is not defended decisively as a condition for all other rights of the person, all other references to Human rights remain deceitful and illusory. Explain the importance of all life to your children. Discuss this basic human right on a level that they can understand. The students of Grade 8 are traveling to Washington DC this Tuesday, returning late Thursday evening. Father Ireland and I, along with the Grade 8 teachers, will be chaperones for this trip. Keep us in your prayers for safe travel and a fun experience. (A little prayer for good weather wouldn t hurt.) We all look forward to this exciting educational field trip. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it. Rainforests are being cut down at the rate of 100 acres per minute! Motor oil never wears out, it just gets dirty. Oil can be recycled, re-refined and used again, reducing our reliance on imported oil. A single quart of motor oil, if disposed of improperly, can contaminate up to 2,000,000 gallons of fresh water. On average, each one of us produces 4.4 pounds of solid waste each day. This adds up to almost a ton of trash per person, per year. A typical family consumes 182 gallons of soda, 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk, and 26 gallons of bottled water a year. That's a lot of containers -- make sure they're recycled!

PAGE 6 REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURE... 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Of the 27 books in the New Testament, which was written first? The answer is the one which is the subject of today s second reading: Paul s First Letter to the Thessalonians, written 20 years after the Ascension. Thessalonica was also the Roman Via Egnatia highway in northern Greece. Hearing good reports about the church he founded, Paul wrote in 51 A.D. to encourage his converts. In a sense, these words we read today started the New Testament. A serious problem of conscience for Jews was paying taxes to the occupying power, Rome. The Pharisees and Herodians (political supporters of the Herodian princes) try to trap Jesus and fail.
