Dear Partnering Parishioners, Lent is coming it is our spiritual spring training camp! It is Mardi Gras time, you know, Fat Tuesday and all that fun stuff because we know that the next day begins a special and holy season called Lent. Wednesday, March 6t h is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. There are six weeks of Lent. The final week is called Holy Week, and the last three days are called the Paschal Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. This holy season is penitential in nature. That is why as a Church we intensify our traditional practices through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Use this holy season to draw closer to the Lord whose love for you is everlasting and whose mercy endures forever. Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving Here are the rules for Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence from meat All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Our faith community will again participate in Operation Rice Bowl this Lent. Operation Rice Bowl is the official Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services, and calls Catholics in the United States to reach out in solidarity with the poor around the world through the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving (learning and giving). Operation Rice Bowl helps us to simplify our lifestyle, learn about the challenges faced by the poor each day and give the balance saved through fasting and other sacrifices. By participating in these three activities, we come to understand our call to be a part of one global community. Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Dear Monsignor Majoros, It is with great joy and humble hearts that on October 16, 2019, the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters will celebrate the 125th year of their founding in the US. Our journey of trust and faith over these past 125 years has been filled with moments of blessing, joy, and surprises, as well as times of struggle, hardship, and sadness. But in all things, God has been ever faithful to us. Since 1894 when our foundress, Mother Veronica Grzedowska, left her cloister in Poland to answer the call to mission, the congregation has responded with energy and imagination to the many needs of God s people. We have blossomed and expanded our ministries to include the People of God in not only the US, but also Africa, Brazil, and Santo Domingo. The goodness and mercy of God knows no boundaries. It has been said that a grateful heart sees many blessings. The Bernardine Sisters have been touched by the lives of so many families, co-workers, and others they have met and ministered with in the years they served in your parish. As we joyfully anticipate our 125th anniversary celebration, we implore our generous and loving God to bless you and your parishioners for their support and their kindnesses while our sisters were missioned among you. Your parish is a part of our blessed history. During this anniversary year, we invite you to partner with us in a year of thanksgiving and prayer. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us in serving the mission of Jesus with courage and enthusiasm. We also ask your prayers that God will send us vocations to respond to God s invitation to love and serve the People of God. The Bernardine Sisters around the world extend the blessing of St. Francis upon you. The Lord bless you and keep you. May He show His face to you and have mercy. May He turn His countenance to you and give you peace. The Lord bless you. With our deepest gratitude, I am in the Name of Jesus Sister Marilisa H. da Silva, OSF Congregational Minister 092-5
