Page 2 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News June 18, 2017 FR. GÉRARD S CORNER Prefigured in the manna, which both nourished individuals and defined Israel as a community under God s special care, so Jesus, the Living Bread, bestows eternal life on us as individuals and a community through the gift of the Eucharist. In verses preceding today s Gospel, Jesus declares, Whoever believes has eternal life (John 6:47). Today, Jesus replaces believes with Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life (6:54). By using flesh, John s word for the whole of human nature ( And the Word became flesh [1:14]), John challenges us who receive Christ s flesh in the Eucharist to assimilate the whole of Jesus humanity, that is, Jesus self-sacrificingunto-death lifestyle, as our distinctive manner of being human. For Paul, Eucharistic bread and cup are both sign of what the community is called to be and source of the community s strength to live that ideal. John s Last Supper account lacks bread, wine, and Eucharistic institution, focusing instead on Jesus washing the disciples feet. John s Eucharistic theology today, and Paul s teaching that Eucharistic sharing makes us one with Christ and each other, indicate that an authentically Eucharistic community both worships Christ s presence in the Eucharist and serves Christ s presence in the least. Ideally, we who devoutly adore Jesus in the tabernacle should also serve the poor in a real and hands-on way. How fitting for the Eucharistic Christ to be carried in Corpus Christi s traditional procession through the very streets Christ s disciples travel when carrying the Church s care to those in need. Page 7 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News June 18, 2017 POPE S INTENTIONS FOR JUNE National Leaders: That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade, which victimizes so many innocent people. Jun 22, Mass & Healing Service Fr. George Reynolds at 6:30 pm Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church 5011 White Oak Ave, Encino Claudia (818) 342-6626 DID YOU KNOW? Protect kids from bullying while playing online... The pace of online gaming is only growing. There is a small but real chance that victimization could occur when kids play and interact with others on phones, tablets, laptops, desktops and gaming consoles. A helpful way to teach children about handling problems is to encourage them to report issues when they arise. Internet service providers and gaming networks have systems set up to field complaints of abuse and then investigate them (in conjunction with law enforcement, when necessary). For more tips on how to help protect young people from vulnerabilities while playing online please email jvienna@la-archdiocese.org or call (213) 637-7227 to receive a copy of the VIRTUS article Preventing Cyberbullying in Online Gaming, Part 2. 818-341-3680 ext. 157 Sunday: 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Closed Monday Tuesday through Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Bibles, Books, Candles, Rosaries, Statues, Jewelry, Crucifixes, Greeting cards, Religious art, Baptism, Wedding Unity candles, Arrars, Lassos Give us this Day books The Shop is located at the Mason parking lot Church entrance Sun: Dt 8:2-3, 14b-16a Ps 147:12-15, 19-20 1 Cor 10:16-17 Jn 6:51-58 Mon: 2 Cor 6:1-10 Ps 98:1, 2b, 3-4 Mt 5:38-42 Tues: 2 Cor 8:1-9 Ps 146:2, 5-9a Mt 5:43-48 Wed: 2 Cor 9:6-11 Ps 112:1bc-4, 9 Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 Thurs: 2 Cor 11:1-11 Ps 111:1b-4, 7-8 Mt 6:7-15 Fri: Dt 7:6-11 Ps 103:1-4, 6-8, 10 1 Jn 4:7-16 Mt 11:25-30 Sat: Day: Is 49:1-6 Ps 139:1-3, 13-15 Acts 13:22-26 Lk 1:57-66, 80 Vigil: Jer 1:4-10 Ps 71:1-6, 15, 17 1 Pt 1:8-12 Lk 1:5-17 June 18 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ, Father s Day 5:30pm Fred Fauth, Noah Salazar Herminio Prospero, 7:30am Ang Luy L.
