The Seventh Week of Eastertide 8 14 May 2016 This Week in the Church Year Betwixt and between the Ascension of our Lord and the first Christian Pentecost, the disciples waited in Jerusalem: spending their time in the Upper Room (recalling the place of the Lord s Supper), continually devoting themselves to prayer (Acts 1:13f); and otherwise continually in the Temple praising God (St. Luke 24:53). So do we live betwixt and between the Ascension of our Lord and His coming for the final judgment, between our Baptism into His death and the resurrection of our bodies on the last day. We too live in the Upper Room and the Temple of His Church, hearing and receiving the Gospel Word & Sacrament, and continually given to prayer, praise and thanksgiving. Emphasis: The Lord Jesus Christ Is with Us in His Holy Church The Order of Daily Catechesis in Word and Prayer Pray and confess out loud as much from the order of daily catechesis as you and your family are able. Learn by heart the verse, catechism, and hymn of the week. [The Opening Versicles and Psalmody]: O Lord, open my lips. And my mouth will declare Your praise. Make haste, O God, to deliver me. Make haste to help me, O Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. The Catechism: The Sacrament of the Altar, Part II What is the benefit of such eating and drinking? These words, Given and shed for you, for the forgiveness of sins, show us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation. The Hymns of the Week SINCE OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST, CHRIST JESUS LSB #529 [Daily Prayer: Invocation, Apostles Creed, Kyrie Eleison, and the Our Father]: In the Name Z of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and Z the life everlasting. Amen. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever & ever. Amen.

[The Collect of the Week, Intercessions for each day of the week, and Special Petitions]: Collect for the Seventh Week of Eastertide: O King of glory, Lord of hosts, uplifted in triumph far above all heavens, leave us not without consolation but send us the Spirit of Truth, whom You promised from the Father; for You live and reign with Him and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Amen) Daily Themes for Intercessory Prayer: Sunday: For the joy of the Resurrection; for the faithful preaching and hearing of God s Word; for the fruit of faith nourished by the Word and Sacraments. Monday: For faith to live in the promises of Holy Baptism; for vocations and daily work; for the unemployed; for the salvation and well-being of our neighbors; for Resurrection Lutheran Academy and other schools, our home schools, our colleges and seminaries; for good government and peace. Tuesday: For deliverance against temptation and evil; for the addicted and despairing; for the tortured and oppressed; for those struggling with sin. Wednesday: For marriage and family, that husbands and wives, parents and children live in ordered harmony according to the Word of God; for parents who must rear their children alone; for our communities and neighborhoods. Thursday: For the Church and her pastors; for missionaries, teachers, deaconesses, and other servants of Christ and His Church; for the fruitful and salutary use of the blessed Sacrament of the Lord s Body and Blood. Friday: For the preaching of the holy cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; for its spread throughout the whole world; for the persecuted; for the sick and dying. Saturday: For faithfulness to the end; for the renewal of those who are withering in the faith or have fallen away; for pastors as they prepare to administer Christ s holy gifts; for receptive hearts and minds on the Lord s Day. In our Prayers this Week at Emmaus: Our brothers and sisters in Christ at Trinity in Elkhart, as their new facility will be consecrated with the Word of God and prayer this coming Sunday (15 May); Kelvin & Melissa (née Seyboldt) Rodriguez, who were married in December, as they look forward to the blessing of their marriage at Emmaus (11 June); Those couples among our extended family and friends who are expecting babies in the coming months, including Joshua & Brook Sams of Florida, Rev. Paul & Elicia Doellinger (of Cassopolis, Michigan), Zach & Emma Patterson (of Fort Wayne), and Rev. Christopher & Rachel Davis (of Elkhart); Bob Louk (a friend of Andy Jordan), who is on hospice, dying from cancer; and Robert Juday, as he continues to struggle in his health.

[The Daily Morning or Evening Prayer, the Benedicamus, and the Benediction]: (Morning): We thank You, Lord God, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept us this night from all harm and danger; and we pray that You would keep us this day also from sin and every evil, that all our doings and life may please You; for into Your hands we commend ourselves, our bodies and souls and all things; let Your holy Angel be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. (Evening): We thank You, Lord God, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept us this day from all harm and danger; and we pray that You would forgive us all our sins, wherever we have done wrong, and graciously keep us this night; for into Your hands we commend ourselves, our bodies and souls and all things; let Your holy Angel be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us. Amen. Thanks be to God. The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Love of God and the Communion of the Holy Spirit Z be with us all. Amen. Then, if it is in the morning, go joyfully to your work, according to your vocations in life, in faith toward God and in love toward your neighbor; or, if it is at the close of the day, go to sleep at once and in good cheer. Commemoration of the Patriarch Job Monday, 9 May Job was a blameless and upright man who came from Uz (Job 1:1), a land northeast of Canaan. The Book of Job examines the depths of his faith, which was severely tested through the sufferings God permitted. Despite the sudden death of his ten children and the loss of all his wealth and his health, Job refused to curse God: Naked I came from my mother s womb, and naked shall I return; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord (1:21). Still, in the midst of his tribulations, Job questioned the meaning and purpose of suffering to the point of asserting his own righteousness (34:5-6). Finally, the Lord revealed that a man cannot know the mysteries of God (chapters 38-41). Job s faith in his Redeemer and the resurrection prevailed (19:25-27). In the end the Lord restored his wealth and blessed him with another seven sons and three daughters.

Commemoration of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, Missionaries Wednesday, 11 May Cyril (c. 826-69) and Methodius (c. 815-85) were brothers who came from a Greek family in Thessalonica. The younger brother took the name Cyril when he became a monk. After ordination, Cyril became librarian at the great church of the Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) in Constantinople. In 862 the brothers were sent by the emperor as missionaries to what is now the Czech republic, where they taught in the native Slavic tongue. Cyril actually invented the alphabet known today as Cyrillic, which provided a written language for translation of the Divine Liturgy and the Holy Scriptures, in order to serve the Slavic peoples with the Gospel. This use of the vernacular established an important principle for evangelical missions. It demonstrates the ongoing miracle of Pentecost, whereby the one Gospel of Christ is proclaimed in all languages. Let each his lesson learn with care, and all the household well shall fare. Looking forward to the Feast of Pentecost Day 15 May 2016 Hymns: LSB #489 LSB #497 LSB #499 LSB #503 LSB #659 LSB #768 LSB #834 LSB #874 LSB #906 LSB #913 Hail Thee, Festival Day Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest O Day Full of Grace That Now We See Lord of Our Life and God of Our Salvation To God the Holy Spirit Let Us Pray O God, O Lord of Heaven and Earth O Splendor of God s Glory Bright O Day of Rest and Gladness O Holy Spirit, Enter In Genesis 11:1 9: Following the flood, the descendants of Noah and his sons did not spread out to fill the earth, as God had spoken, but tried to establish glory and a name for themselves, building a great city and a tower that reached into the heavens. The Lord humbled them by confusing their languages, dividing them, and causing them to be scattered over the face of the whole earth. Acts 2:1 21: The confusion and dispersion of Babel were reversed on the first Christian Pentecost (the fiftieth day of Eastertide), when God caused the one Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to be preached in a multitude of languages. St. John 14:23 31: By the gift of the Holy Spirit, who bestows the forgiveness of sins from the Cross, there is the true Peace of reconciliation with the Father.
