When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, Repent [Matthew 4:17], He willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance. 2. This word cannot be understood as referring to the sacrament of penance, that is, confession and satisfaction, as administered by the clergy. 5. The Pope neither desires nor is able to remit any penalties except those imposed by his own authority or that of the canons. Continued p. 2 Save the Date! Excerpts from 95 Theses (Continued from page 1) 27. They preach only human doctrines who say that as soon as the money clinks into the money chest, the soul flies out of purgatory. 28. It is certain that when money clinks in the money chest, greed and avarice can be increased; but when the church intercedes, the result is in the hands of God alone. 32. Those who believe that they can be certain of their salvation because they have indulgence letters will be eternally damned, together with their teachers. 36. Any truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt, even without indulgence letters. 37. Any true Christian, whether living or dead, participates in all the blessings of Christ and the church; and this is granted him by God, even without indulgence letters. 42. Christians are to be taught that the pope does not intend that the buying of indulgences should in any way be compared with works of mercy. 43. Christians are to be taught that he who gives to the poor or lends to the needy does a better deed than he who buys indulgences. 45. Christians are to be taught that he who sees a needy man and passes him by, yet gives his money for indulgences, does not buy papal indulgences but God's wrath. 52. It is vain to trust in salvation by indulgence letters, even though the indulgence commissary, or even the pope, were to offer his soul as security. 62. The true treasure of the church is the most holy gospel of the glory and grace of God. 76. We say on the contrary that papal indulgences cannot remove the very least of venial sins as far as guilt is concerned. 81. This unbridled preaching of indulgences makes it difficult even for learned men to rescue the reverence which is due the pope from slander or from the shrewd questions of the laity, 82. Such as: "Why does not the Pope empty purgatory for the sake of holy love and the dire need of the souls that are there if he redeems an infinite number of souls for the sake of miserable money with which to build a church? The former reason would be most just; the latter is most trivial." 92. Away, then, with all those prophets who say to the people of Christ, "Peace, peace," and there is no peace! [Jeremiah 6:14] 93. Blessed be all those prophets who say to the people of Christ, "Cross, cross," and there is no cross! 94. Christians should be exhorted to be diligent in following Christ, their Head, through penalties, death and hell, 95. And thus be confident of entering into heaven through many tribulations rather than through the false security of peace [Acts 14:22]. ~~ Dr. Martin Luther University of Wittenberg October 31, 1517 (http://cyclopedia.lcms.org) 2

Kindness ROCKS! This month the kids made Kindness Rocks. The kids painted rocks and added a Christian message. While they dried, Pastor led them in a devotion. Then we went out and hid the rocks at four different parks here in town. While hiding rocks, some of the kids also found kindness rocks that other groups had made! 6

Our next LWML meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 4 at 10:00 am Hope to see you there! The Parenting Profession In the Word Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 Of the Word Advanced degrees are required for those in many professions - doctors, lawyers, pastors, engineers. Yet parenting, probably the most important profession one can have, requires no advanced degree. Parents are to be guides, supporters, and encouragers as they help children discover their talents, develop their abilities, and use their gifts. Most importantly, God commands that parents be responsible for their spiritual training. When the writer of Proverbs reminds us to Train up a child in the way he should go... "the way" is God's way. Parents cheer at ball games and applaud at dance recitals, but how much more important it is to be actively involved in a child's spiritual growth! A Christian parent's daily example is a child's best sermon. Parenting never ends - just as praying for one's children is a life-long privilege. And no advanced degree is needed for that. A Point to Ponder: Who was most faithful in teaching me the way- God's way - for my life? Walking with my Lord Thank You, Lord, for enabling Christian parents to teach their children of Your love. Help me to share my faith by both word and example. In Jesus' name. Amen. - Taken from LWML Mustard Seed Daily Devotions 7

Come join us for our next Senior Service! Monday, October 9 th 1:00 p.m. A light lunch will be served immediately following Our next dinner will be at The Whistle Stop Café (2080 E. Division, Diamond IL) Tuesday, October 10 th 5:30 p.m (If you would like to join us, please sign the sheet located on the bulletin table or call the church office.) After reading the article about our K.Y.K.S. Shoe Ministry in the Northern Light, a gentleman from Maple Park, IL was moved by how God meets some of the back-to-school needs in our community every year through our congregation. He sent a generous donation along with a letter of encouragement that was so heart-warming that we felt compelled to share it! (Name withheld for privacy) 8
