R E F L E C T I O N S Any true Christian, whether living or dead, participates in all the blessings of Christ and the church; and this is granted him by God, even without indulgence letters. Martin Luther, #37 of 95 Theses The true treasure of the church is the most holy gospel of the glory and grace of God. Martin Luther, #62 of 95 Theses Jesus swam in the violent and hateful waters of our anthropology so he could pull us out and save us from ourselves. He was perfection in the midst of chaos and cruelty. Perfect love in the face of abject hate. Our low anthropology is the precise compliment to his high Christology. If you ever find a church that tells you otherwise, you should run screaming out of the pew. Sarah Condon from Churchy Circumstances may appear to wreck our lives and God's plans, but God is not helpless among the ruins. Our broken lives are not lost or useless. God's love is still working. He comes in and takes the calamity and uses it victoriously, working out his wonderful plan of love. Eric Liddell from Disciplines of the Christian Life

Jeff Pa t e, Pa stor Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost Leaders In Worship: Assisting Elder Lowell Urban Nancy Allen, piano WELCOME & PRELUDE Program all communication devices to be in silent mode. Thank you. Please use this time for prayer and meditation as we prepare to go before the living God in worship. P R A I S E CALL TO WORSHIP: from Psalm 46 Pastor: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Pastor: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice; the earth melts. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Pastor: Come, let us worship. HYMN OF PRAISE: 92 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. 2

C O N F E S S I O N SCRIPTURE READING: Isaiah 30:8-11 8 And now, go, write it before them on a tablet and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for 9 the time to come as a witness forever. For they are a rebellious people, lying children, 10 children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord; who say to the seers, Do not see, and to the prophets, Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, 11 prophesy illusions, leave the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: Heavenly Father, like your people long ago, we are a rebellious people who have been reluctant to hear and to heed your Word. Our ears are drawn to smooth words that flatter us and excuse our disobedience. Have mercy on us. Please forgive us for neglecting your Word and disobeying your commands. Transform our hearts that we may behold wondrous things out of your law and our appetites that your Word would be our delight. Holy Spirit, you have shown us our sin now fix our gaze on our Savior, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION from Isaiah 30:18; Romans 5:8 Hear the good news that begins with the character of the True and Living God as recorded by the prophet Isaiah. The Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. The merciful and just God showed his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Through faith in Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: Pastor: Pastor: HYMN: 524 Thy Works, Not Mine, O Christ 3

C O M M I T M E N T OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY Presentation of tithes & offerings DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter V: 1, 5, 7 Leader: God the great Creator of all things does uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, according to His infallible foreknowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of His own will, to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy. Leader: The most wise, righteous, and gracious God does oftentimes leave, for a season, His own children to manifold temptations, and the corruption of their own hearts, to chastise them for their former sins, or to discover unto them the hidden strength of corruption and deceitfulness of their hearts, that they may be humbled; and, to raise them to a more close and constant dependence for their support upon Himself, and to make them more watchful against all future occasions of sin, and for sundry other just and holy ends. Leader: As the providence of God does, in general, reach to all creatures; so, after a most special manner, it takes care of His Church, and disposes all things to the good thereof. P R E A C H I N G O F T H E W O R D SCRIPTURE: Luke 8:22-25 22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, Let us go across to 23 the other side of the lake. So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, Master, Master, we are perishing! And he awoke 25 and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, Where is your faith? And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him? SERMON: At Rest in Chaos Rev. Jeff Pate C O M M U N I O N HYMN: 521 My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less Pastor: Pastor: O taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. Jesus said, Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Jesus said, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER Riverwood Presbyterian uses wine in the celebration of Holy Communion.
