The Practice of Prayer Today we re going to spend some time learning about prayer. For some people prayer is natural, for some it is an easy habit, for some it takes different forms, and for some it s a source of guilt because of not being very good at it. There are all sorts of ways to pray. To me one of the most important things about it is that it is intentional in whatever way, you are intentionally placing thoughts, conversations, ideas, or concerns before God, giving them into God s care in one way or another. One practice that might be useful for setting aside prayer time is to ask yourself questions like this as you begin: Am I tired? How tired? Am I angry? At what or at whom? Am I sad? Why? Where in my body does the sadness reside? Am I afraid? How afraid? Of what? Of whom? Am I grateful? For what? For whom? Is my heart at peace? Once you have spoken these truths to yourself, tell them to God. Then listen. (From When in Doubt, Sing Prayer in Daily Life, by Jane Redmont,(New York: HarperCollins 1999), p.22) God s peace, David
