1 Sunday, February 19, 2017 - Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Rs CAMPAIGN: UNLESS THE LORD BUILDS THE HOUSE..THE CITY, THEY LABOR IN VAIN WHO BUILD IT."-- Sixteen months from now our parish will be celebrating in great thanksgiving the 60th anniversary of its beginnings on May 10, 1958. At this time 58 years ago in the first year of the parish s existence, a small group of charter members from the 200 original families were focusing their efforts on building the first church of the parish which is now our parish hall. They were also planning to build the first wing of Our Mother of Sorrows School. During this past year, in anticipation of the 60th anniversary of our parish 16 months from now, a significant core leadership group of our parishioners from existing leadership councils and commissions have been reviewing and discerning some of the critical needs within our parish plant calling for attention. The process has resulted in a comprehensive plan addressing many of the needs which were revealed to us during the review process of this past year. With the unanimous concurrence of our Parish Ministries Council, our Parish Stewardship & Development Council, our Parish Board of Directors, and our Liturgy & Worship and Building & Maintenance commissions, we are now launching a campaign around the theme Remember, Renew and Rediscover Jesus Christ. The special insert in this Sunday bulletin is an outline of the needs that became apparent during this year s review process. Please pray the following prayer regularly for God s blessings on our efforts. 3Rs Prayer: Remember, Renew and Rediscover Jesus Christ Loving and merciful God, your Word proclaims Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Thanks for your guiding hand and abundant blessings on the mission, growth and development of Our Mother of Sorrows parish faith community and school. Lead us to prayerfully Remember, Renew and Rediscover Jesus Christ in all that we are and do. Pour out your Spirit anew upon this community of faith. Bless and renew your people and our campus and buildings launching pads for encountering Jesus Christ in Word, community, Sacrament and loving service. Open our hearts to be generous in renewing our campus for rediscovering Jesus Christ and His mission, ministry and way of loving service. Lest we labor in vain, we entrust our capital campaign and all our efforts to Jesus through Mary, His Mother our Patroness Our Mother of Sorrows. Amen. LENT IS A COMING: March 1st, Ash Wednesday, introduces us to our repentance and reformation season. In preparation for the 40-day journey through the Lenten season, it is now opportune for us to be reflecting on what is called the Lenten discipline. The core of the Lenten discipline is having more time and attention for prayer, doing voluntary fasting and selfdenial, and reaching out in love in what is called almsgiving. It is good at this time to pose some personal questions to oneself how do I plan on embracing the Lenten discipline beginning on Ash Wednesday? What will I do differently in my religious observances and practices that might lead to a deeper conversion of life and a greater fullness of God s Kingdom coming into my heart in response? HUNGER BANQUET: The Christian Life Commission would like to cordially invite you to our Lenten Hunger Banquet on Saturday, March 4th from 10:30am 12:30pm. There is no charge for this unique gathering where you will pray about, learn about and experience Hunger in our midst! Please see the bulletin for further information. CATHOLIC S DIVORCE HEALING PROGRAM BEGINS MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20TH The Catholic s DIVORCE SURVIVAL Guide 12-week program begins here this Monday evening at 6:30pm and will meet Monday evenings through May 8th. The group closes after the third week and group size is limited. Whether you were divorced ten years ago or ten days ago, the program offers valuable insight for everyone. For information, contact Felicia Klein at 425-6529 or cdsgtucson@yahoo.com. Registration forms are available at diocesetucson.org/catechesis-and-family. VALENTINE S DINNER & DANCE WELL RECEIVED: The annual event was again very well received by 80 couples. It was beautifully presented and gave special opportunities for couples to renew and strengthen their bonds of friendship and love. The unique gift of friendship of love in marriage, when fully accepted, cherished and lived, is a sign of God s love for His people - the Church. Thanks to our LifeTeen Youth Ministry for providing the gift of free childcare. Because of this loving service, it was possible for couples with younger children to enjoy the evening. Our deepest thanks to all the members of the organizing and sponsoring group who worked so hard behind the scenes: Aida & Randy Samuel, RJ & Eddie Saavedra, Dynse Crunkleton & Scott Wilson, Brenda & Paul Carrillo, Lynn & Gordon Fuell, Reina & Jaime Gomez, Pam Coonan & Keiron Bailey, José & Jeannete Merino, AnnaLiza & John Sala, Carmen & Shane Nichols, Hector & Lara Acosta, Mike & Mary Beth Tucker, Madeleine Crespo, Kim Sisson, Cindy Phillips. Thanks for your splendid efforts and service in ministry.

2 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2017 UPDATE WITH YOUR HELP, WE WORK WONDERS : Our parish plays a vital role in the work of the Annual Catholic Appeal, but only YOU bring the wonder of that work to life. Your gifts and pledges touch the community by helping to provide meals to the needy, Masses and communion services for residents in nursing homes, hospices, and assisted living facilities, supporting the programs and services that share the teaching of the Church throughout the Diocese. This appeal gives us the opportunity to act together as a Catholic family and impact the lives of others with the wonder of God s love. Please make your sacrificial commitment to the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. Bishop Kicanas is counting on the support of every parish family to meet our parish goal of $158,000. Complete your pledge form during this time and place it in the offertory weekend collection. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. (Proverbs 31:20) Thank you for your participation in the working of wonders! Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection February 19, 2017-7th Sunday of Ordinary Time Matthew 5:38-48 Jesus shows us what it means to be like him in word and deed in today s Gospel. Jesus challenge is radical. To be like Jesus means that disciples accept their God-given status and dignity as a child of God. Disciples are to choose the path of nonviolence and respond to their life situations with the dignity befitting a child of God. Disciples are to go the extra mile, love their enemies without the expectation of reciprocation, and welcome outsiders at their table. Such perfection is only possible by the grace and love of God. Jesus suggested that a new approach to old problems must now be sought. He gave several examples in today s Gospel. The challenge for the reader is to follow Jesus lead, and use the imagination to seek positive responses to other, often similar situations in life. One must enter the extremely shame-based cultural world of ancient Palestine in order to appreciate the implications of this text. A strike on the right cheek involved either a backhanded slap from the right-handed person, or an open slap from a left-handed person. The left hand was used for bodily hygiene. It was serious affront to use the left hand for such things as eating, placing it on the table, or offering it to others. Whether the slap was left-handed or right-handed made no difference both were considered an insult. Secular literature of Jesus day encouraged humble submission in the face of humiliating violence. Jesus offered another alternative: turning the other cheek. It was neither submission nor surrender. When the victim turned the other cheek, he demonstrated his own personal freedom he was in control, not the oppressor. The oppressor must decide whether or not to slap the person with the back of the hand but this time not as one would slap a slave with the back of the hand but as one would an equal. Jesus was making a point and punctuating it in bold letters. He was condemning violence. His point? One violent act must not constitute another act of violence. Jesus was proposing an alternative response to violence a response that respected the dignity of victim and oppressor. No follower of Christ was to become another person s unwitting doormat. Jesus was teaching his disciples a lesson about God. God showers His love on those who are good and those who are not. God s love is inclusive. When disciples love their enemies, they love as God loves. When disciples extend God s all embracing love to others, they demonstrate to the world that they are a child of God. True perfection exists when our love touches God s love and it spills out upon the lovable and the unlovable alike. ***How does today s Gospel invite you to change? Conversion Study Program Thursdays, March 2 April 13, 7-8:30pm. This Conversion Study Program will enhance your understanding of Bishop Barron s DVD presentation on the lifelong process of conversion. The study guide is divided into seven sections, which correspond to the sections of Bishop Barron s presentation: Introduction, Bartimaeus, The Rich Young Man, Matthew, Jonah, The Woman at the Well, and The Journey of the Magi. Each section provides four or five Questions for Understanding and includes several Questions for Reflection, which help you reflect on how Bishop Barron s message is relevant to your own life and experience. The final gathering will be at Mass on Holy Thursday. Cost for the Study Guide is $14. Please RSVP with the parish office so we can order enough books. God s patience toward sinners is without limit, yet the time for conversion is now. ~Pope Francis DID YOU KNOW Rosary beads are one of the most well-known forms of sacramentals. Most practicing Catholics possess a set of Rosary beads that has been blessed by a priest. They assist the user to keep count of the prayers while they meditate on the great events in the lives of Jesus and Mary.
