MILLERSBURG CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) In the heart of the community, with the community at heart. January, 2017 PLAN B for Christmas Pageant and Luncheon January 8 Epiphany Celebration Let s Go see the savior! Adapted by Barbara Moran from Let s Go See the Savior! Advent Devotions by Lois Scheer When Christmas nears, we gather at the manger to welcome Jesus and welcome others to come see the Savior for themselves! Bad weather resulted in cancellation of the Christmas program and luncheon planned for Dec. 18. We ve rescheduled the pageant and added parts for the wise men. Please join us for this special celebration of Epiphany, when the Wise Men arrive at the manger to see the baby Jesus. For the All Church Pot-Luck Luncheon following worship, please bring 2 dishes to share: a salad, vegetable, or dessert. Meat dishes will be provided by the Worship Committee members. What is Epiphany?? Traditionally, January 6, the Twelfth Night of Christmas (Epiphany) marks a visit to the baby Jesus by The Magi, (the three Kings, or Wise Men). The word 'Epiphany' comes from Greek and means 'manifestation'. It celebrates 'the revelation of God in his Son as human in Jesus Christ'. In the West, Christians began celebrating the Epiphany in the 4th century, associating it with the visit of the Wise Men to Jesus. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the three kings found baby Jesus by following a star across the desert to Bethlehem. The three kings followed the star of Bethlehem to meet the baby Jesus. According to Matthew 2:11, they offered symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The gifts were symbolic of the importance of Jesus' birth, the gold representing his royal standing; frankincense his divine birth; and myrrh his mortality. (source: the internet) Our sanctuary was decorated beautifully with poinsettias in memory or honor of the following people: Larry Baumgartner, in memory of Pat Baumgartner Ken and Debbie Owens, in memory of James Owens Jeff and Barbara Moran, in honor and memory of their parents, Fred and Betty Moran and Robert and Naomi Von Gunten Bill and Carolyn Anderson, in memory of their parents and husband, John and Betty Anderson and Lloyd and Faye Robbins and Michael Bethell. Elaine, Bruce and Wayne Long in memory of their husband and father, Gary Long. Dan and Brenda Rose, in memory of all their family members who have passed and to honor their Millersburg Church Family for all of their hard work to keep our church alive and thriving!

Stewardship and Finance As of Sunday, December 18, our accounts at Callaway Bank had these amounts: checking - $6,607; savings - $6,261. We transferred $2000 from checking to savings so that a little more of our money would be in an interest bearing account. And remember that $2,653 is the remainder of the Bridgeton Grant and is ear-marked for an infrastructure project, such as painting. Nonetheless, these figures mean that our year-end financial condition is in better shape than it has been for a couple of years. But while it may seem like we have "a lot of money" at the moment, let me repeat a couple of things. The congregation passed a budget of $48,000; meeting this budget means having about $4000 a month in income. We are not meeting that goal with regular pledges/donations. That means relying on fundraisers to pay the general operating expenses. And if we have an incident (like another flood in the basement) that is unplanned and unbudgeted, our money could disappear in a hurry. The best fundraiser, of course (and something that would benefit the church in many other ways, also), is to have a lot more people in the pews each Sunday. We look forward to the new year with renewed energy and spirit! Dear Friends of MCC, Thank you so much for the Christmas gift. Thank you for thinking of me at this time of year. It was truly unexpected. God Bless You in the coming year! Lisa Landrum Thank you so much. Your gift was completely unexpected and deeply appreciated. Warren and Edie Gilbert Thank you so much for the most generous Christmas gift. You all are like family to me and I am grateful to be able to serve you. Thanks again Carolyn Anderson The Long Family lights the Christ Candle A Word from Our Board Chair Happy New Year! Hope Christmas was a time of joy and brought you the peace of the season. 2017---can you believe it? I am feeling as though time slides on greased runners. Is that age or what? Although, I hear young people say the same thing so maybe it is just the time we live in where all plays at a fast speed. Sometimes I wish I could slow it down a bit. In reflecting on the advent season, I found much joy in the music, the cookies and shared fellowship with my church family. Even with ice canceling our Christmas program and luncheon, there was still much to enjoy...and we can still look forward to the program and luncheon on January 8 th. Please join us...a great way to celebrate the new year. And the most joyous of all is the addition of 8 young people to act out the birth of Jesus. What a benefit to MCC; these young ones and their families. I hope we are a benefit to them as well. By lighting the Advent candles each Sunday until ALL the candles were lighted, especially the Christ candle, we are reminded that the light is with us for all seasons and all year...it is always new and refreshing and optimistic. On January 15, Sunday evening at 6:30 we will begin a pilot movie night. This is a casual movie viewing (this time will be Heaven is Real) for the whole family. Popcorn and drinks will be available and will end around 8:00.in time to get young ones home and ready for bed. On this date there is no school the next day as it is the Martin Luther King holiday. If movie night is enjoyed by a few or many, we will try to do it again in February. Perhaps make it a staple for our community. Oh, I forgot to say it is open to all...so tell your neighbors and friends, or better yet, bring them with you. New committees are forming and tasks are already at hand...a grant is being written and will be submitted by the time you read this. This grant has potential to help with our infrastructure and accessibility needs at MCC. If you want to help with a task or program at MCC, please let me know. There are lots of jobs and decisions to make each year...your help is needed and appreciated. It is a great way to get to know people and bring ideas to share. So new year and new opportunities to be together in Christ...There is a lot to look forward to at MCC in 2017. We look forward to seeing you. Brenda
