WELCOME TO BRISTOL CATHEDRAL SPECIAL SERVICES 2 Come and See. Those were some of the first words Jesus spoke as his ministry began. As spring and summer blossoms, so does activity at Bristol Cathedral, your Cathedral, open every day and free to visit. Come and see. Families and children can enjoy exploring the Cathedral with our new Robin Trail or by joining us at our free arts and crafts days. In February we showcase art created by talented young people from across the region, local artist Chris Webster brings five spectacular large artworks to us for Holy Week and Easter, while in May we welcome Christopher Jonas photographs which explore the relationship between cathedrals and their visitors. We will be partnering with Bristol Film Festival and The Cary Grant Festival to show classic movies and will be the first Cathedral to hold a special screening of the anti-trafficking film SOLD. We continue to remember the First World War with our book of remembrance and a new exhibition. Our flagship speaker series undivided addresses cutting edge issues in doctrine, spirituality, politics and social justice and we re delighted to offer more opportunities to join our popular Wolf Hall tours. Lunchtime recitals and evening concerts keep the building full of music. Drop in for tea and cake at the café, gift buying in the shop, and as the weather gets warmer, discover our beautiful garden or simply come and enjoy some peace and space at the heart of the city. The Very Revd Dr David Hoyle, Dean of Bristol In our Christian worship, the first half of the year takes us on a journey through Christ s life, with some of the most beautiful and moving services of the year. In January we are still keeping Christmas and remembering the wise men arriving in Bethlehem. As the weeks roll on, we have services that remind us of Christ s baptism, his temptation in the wilderness, his arrival in Jerusalem, his supper with his disciples, and then his betrayal, trial and death. We use the whole building as that story reaches its climax and there are some dramatic moments in light and dark, and some wonderful music, as we approach the celebration of Easter. All are very welcome. The Very Revd Dr David Hoyle, Dean of Bristol The Eucharist The word Eucharist means thanksgiving. During this service Christians share bread and wine which, when blessed by a priest who invokes the Holy Spirit, assume the properties of Christ s Body and Blood. As well as the Eucharist, this service is often referred to as Holy Communion, Mass, the Lord s Supper or the Holy Mystery. Feast of the Epiphany Fri 6 Jan 6pm We mark the arrival of the Magi at the manger throne in Bethlehem and their exotic and highly symbolic gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Feast of Candlemas Thurs 2 Feb 6pm At this candlelit service, we celebrate the presentation of the infant Christ at the temple when Simeon proclaims him Light of the World. Feast of the Ascension Thurs 25 May 6pm On this, the 40th day after Easter, we celebrate the bodily ascension of Jesus to heaven. Cathedral Eucharist on the Feast of Pentecost Sun 4 Jun 10am We celebrate the gift of the life-giving Holy Spirit which sustains the life of all Christians. Cathedral Eucharist on the Feast of Trinity Sun 11 Jun 10am Trinity Sunday celebrates the Trinitarian God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit and is our Feast of Title. Bristol Cathedral is dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. Feast of the Corpus Christi Thurs 15 Jun 6pm We reflect on the meaning of Christ s sacrifice as we receive his Body and Blood in this joyful celebration of the Eucharist. LENT AND EASTER 4 What is Lent? Lent - the great forty days of preparation for the Feast of Easter - begins on Ash Wednesday, a solemn day of repentance and forgiveness. As we receive the cross of ashes on our foreheads, we are reminded of our mortality and our utter dependence upon God our Father. Over the next six weeks, we journey towards the Cross, examining and reviewing our spiritual lives. The Imposition of Ashes Ash Wednesday 1 March 8am, 12.30pm, 6pm On the first day of Lent, which is a day of repentance, we receive the sign of the cross on our forehead. Choral Eucharist at 6pm will include Allegri s Miserere. Question Mark Sat 1 Apr 10.30am Join us as we gather to hear Mark s gospel being read through in its entirety. Teacher and Performer Stefan Smart will recite the gospel in a way which promises to be thought provoking and reflective as we approach our celebrations of Easter. Festival Eucharist for Palm Sunday Sun 9 Apr 10am Celebrate Jesus triumphal ride into Jerusalem with this special service, including a procession around College Green led by Ruby the donkey. Ballet Tableaux Sun 9 Apr 3.30pm Join us for a performance by gifted young dancers from the Bristol School of Dance exploring the themes of the Cross. Compline, with the Lamentations of Jeremiah Wed 12 Apr 7.30pm Sung by the Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars. Join us to hear this hauntingly beautiful choral performance, as we journey through the most solemn week of the Christian calendar. The Diocesan Chrism Eucharist Thurs 13 Apr 10.30am At this Diocesan service attended by churches across the Diocese of Bristol, the Bishop blesses the holy oils to be used for baptisms, confirmations, and healing in the Diocese throughout the year. The Triduum I: The Liturgy of the Last Supper Thurs 13 Apr 7.30pm With the washing of feet and watch until midnight at the altar of Repose. Meditations at the Cross Good Friday 14 Apr 12 noon With readings, homilies, and hymns, as we draw close to the time of Christ s death. The Triduum The Triduum is a period of prayer, recalling the three days of Christ s death, burial and resurrection. It is a moving and powerful way of living through the story of Holy Week and reaching the joy of Easter Day. The Triduum II: The Liturgy of the Lord s Death Good Friday 14 Apr 1.30pm One of the Cathedral s most beautiful and moving services, as we reflect on the meaning of the cross, and share in the body of Christ, reserved overnight from the Liturgy of the Last Supper. The Triduum III: The Liturgy of the Resurrection Sat 15 Apr 9pm Join us as we gather in Vigil for Easter. This dramatic service includes a bonfire in the cloister from which we will light the new Paschal Candle and will be followed by fireworks and a glass of something sparkling in the Cathedral garden. Festival Eucharist Easter Day 16 Apr 10am Celebrate Easter morning at our Festival Eucharist with confirmations. Festal Evensong Easter Day 16 Apr 3.30pm With procession and solemn Te Deum. 5
EVENTS EXHIBITIONS Flog It! Valuation Day Sat 14 Jan 9.30am 4pm Flog It, the popular BBC One antiques programme presented by Paul Martin, is set to visit Bristol Cathedral. Come along with up to three antiques or collectables that you might be interested in selling. Once valued, the owner and a team of experts will decide whether an object is filmed and then sent to Bristol Auction Rooms in Ashton for auction. In Conversation with Marc Allum Sat 28 Jan 2pm We are delighted to welcome antiques expert Marc Allum, a favourite on the BBC s Antiques Roadshow for an informal talk about the world of art and antiques. The event, hosted by the Friends of Bristol Cathedral will include a talk, tea, raffle and a Q&A session. You are very welcome to bring a small object which Marc may choose to discuss. Tickets are 12 and are strictly limited. Proceeds raised from this event will be used to fund the commission of a new Icon of the Trinity for the Cathedral. Cinema in the Cathedral: SOLD Tues 7 Feb 7pm Based on the acclaimed novel by Patricia McCormick, SOLD tells the story of a young girl, Lakshmi, who journeys from a rural village in Nepal to a gritty brothel called Happiness House in Kolkata. Introducing Niyar Saikia in the role of Lakshmi, the film also stars Gillian Anderson and David Arquette and has two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson as an Executive Producer. This screening supports Child Reach, a global child rights movement working in five countries to ensure that children can take a stand and so fulfill their own potential. Cinema in the Cathedral: Indiscreet Tues 14 Feb 7pm Join us for a special Valentine s Day screening of Indiscreet, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. This event is a pop-up event from the Cary Grant Film Festival, celebrating Bristol s favourite movie star. Cinema in the Cathedral: The Hunchback of Notre Dame Sat 11 Mar 7pm The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 1923 silent movie starring Lon Chaney, directed by Wallace Worsley. Based on Victor Hugo s 1831 novel of the same name, the film is notable for the grand sets that recall 15th century Paris and for Chaney s performance and make-up as the tortured hunchback Quasimodo. This screening is part of Bristol Film Festival and will be accompanied by an improvised organ piece by the Cathedral s Sub-Organist, Dr David Bednall. We Have Our Lives Throughout 2014-2018, Bristol Cathedral is telling the stories of some of those who died as a result of the First World War. Our book of remembrance tells the story of a fallen casualty for every month of the conflict in a personal and human way. Bristol s Australian Pioneer 23 Jan 7 Apr This exhibition tells the extraordinary story of Clifton s Robert Bush, who played cricket alongside W G Grace and later helped establish the Western Australia Cricket Association. Having grown a successful sheep rearing business in Australia, Bush returned to Bristol in 1905 and bought Bishop s Knoll House. He became Sheriff of Bristol in 1912 and at the outbreak of the First World War, converted his home into a 100-bed hospital for wounded Australian soldiers. Senior Schools Art exhibition 9 21 Feb Prize Giving Ceremony, Tues 21 Feb 6.15pm The annual Senior Schools Art Exhibition showcases artwork from students across Bristol and the region. This year s exhibition promises to be one of the biggest yet. The exhibition, which has run for over 10 years is kindly supported by the Bristol Savages. Come and admire the creativity of Bristol s young people in this magnificent setting. Crosses and Stones 1 23 Apr Experience this powerful art work by Chris Webster. Four crucified forms and an empty tomb prompt us to think about our place in the Easter story. Transient: Permanent 28 Apr 26 May Photographer Christopher Jonas offers a tour of twelve cathedrals. His images show our transient relationship with our heritage and raise intriguing questions about our engagement with culture in a world of instant gratifications. Recitals last 45 minutes, and start at 1.15pm. This year s recitalists include David Hobourn, former Assistant Organist at Bristol Cathedral, the Bristol University Madrigal Ensemble, and a concert of music by Ravel. Admission is free and all are welcome a retiring collection is taken at the end of the performance which helps to fund music at the Cathedral. Bristol Bach Choir, MacMillan: St Luke s Passion Sat 1 Apr 7.30pm Join Bristol Bach Choir for an unforgettable evening of passion, power, precision and poignancy as they perform the South West orchestral premier of Sir James MacMillan s St Luke s Passion. The choir will be joined by the excellent choir from Red Maids School and Bath s acclaimed chamber choir A Handful of Singers, alongside the ever brilliant Bristol Ensemble, who will also be performing Barber s intensely moving Adagio for Strings. Bristol Choral Society, Bernstein and Duruflé Sat 10 Jun 7.30pm 70 years after its first performance, Duruflé s Requiem continues to haunt. It gives plainsong-inflected comfort to the living, through the traditional Mass for the dead. Bernstein contemplates comfort too but only after a toe-tapping take on Psalm 100 that will raise the roof! This programme also includes music with a Hebrew influence by the American composer Eric Whitacre. The Annual High Sheriff s Concert Wed 21 Jun 7.30pm This year s Annual High Sheriff s Concert includes the premiere of a special commission, based on the tunes from Dvorak`s New World Symphony sung by an assembled choir made up of schoolchildren from across Bristol. The evening will also include the Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra playing Dvorak s Symphony, the Exultate Singers performing Samuel Barber s Agnus Dei and The Hebrides Overture by Mendelsohn. Bristol Cathedral Choir: Music for Midsummer Fri 16 Jun 7pm Join us for this rare opportunity to see Bristol Cathedral Choir in concert performing a selection of music for the Midsummer season. FAMILIES AND CHILDREN TALKS AND TOURS 10 Families are always welcome at Bristol Cathedral and can visit us for free. This spring, we launch our new Robin Trail which helps families and children to discover different parts of the Cathedral look out for animals in surprising places and draw parts of the building as you spot them. We are proud to be a Children s University learning destination. Crafty Cathedral Thurs 16 Feb: Things that fly Wed 19 Apr Spring Delights Wed 31 May Around the World Crafty Cathedral is our popular programme of halfterm activities for families. Explore the Cathedral with trails and tours, get messy with arts and crafts activities and enjoy fun and creative things to do for the whole family. The sessions are drop-in and all are welcome. Sessions are run on a Pay What You Think basis, with all proceeds going towards our Education work and run 10am till 12pm. A Cracking Egg Hunt 18 22 Apr Explore the Cathedral in this free family trail. 12 Easter Eggs are hidden around the cathedral: each carries a word which helps to make up a secret message. Family storytelling and puppetry: The First King of England in a Dress!! Sat 25 Mar 2pm Families are invited to this wonderful afternoon of storytelling, puppetry and music. 1,000 years ago, there was no place like England for a good story... because there was no place called England! This was a time of huge battles, because the Saxons and the Vikings hated each other. So when a Viking called Cnut tried to be the king of the Saxons too, the Saxons weren t happy. But when a stranger turns up at their door, a grumbly Saxon and his son Aethelred decide to let him in. Soon, they re all sharing stories about giants, gods, and magic and discover some surprising secrets about each other... A fun-packed family storytelling show including puppetry, music from a genuine electroacoustic Anglo-Saxon lyre and plenty of joining in! Produced by Snail Tales. Open Fellowship Tuesdays 14 Feb, 14 Mar, 9 May Open Fellowship provides people with an opportunity to explore their faith in an informal setting, discussing a range of themes and issues. All the sessions are held in the Cathedral Café at 6pm, with tea and nibbles. All are welcome and there is no need to book. Tuesdays 6, 13, 20, 27 Jun, 6pm undivided is Bristol Cathedral s flagship speaker series, addressing cutting edge issues in doctrine, spirituality, politics and social justice. The talks take place termly in the 12th century Chapter House. We hope, as we listen and we talk, that we may take a small step closer to finding what unites and does not divide. Wolf Hall Tours Thursdays 20 Apr, 4 May, 22, Jun, 6pm Bristol Cathedral and Bristol Libraries are delighted to be offering three more opportunities to see Hilary Mantel s award-winning Wolf Hall brought to life in Bristol Cathedral one of the main filming locations for the acclaimed BBC series. Join us for an exclusive tour of this fascinating building led by the Cathedral s Head Guide and hear key passages from the book brought to life by actor David Collins in the very spot where they were filmed.
