The Epistle of 1 John: Theme 1 The importance of our relationship with God, whom we can come to know through Jesus, and the effect this relationships should have on our relationship to others. Fellowship with God produces fellowship with others.

The Epistle of 1 John: Theme 2 Responding to the false teachers, he contrasts the light of true knowledge with the darkness of ignorance, hatred and deceit. The former gives life and the latter leads to death.

The Epistle of 1 John: Theme 3 He highlights what sin (mentioned 27 times in the book) can do to relationships, especially the relationship with God. Turning to God produces eternal life.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our [your] joy may be complete.

You have fellowship with God You have fellowship with each other 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 7 But [If we say we have fellowship with him and] if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. LIGHT 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. DARKNESS

You have fellowship with God You have fellowship with each other When we have fellowship with God... 1 We have Joy 7 But [If we say we have fellowship with him and] if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 Fellowship with God brings Joy Fellowship with God produces great joy A genuine revival without joy in the Lord is as impossible as spring without flowers, or daydawn without light. C.H. Spurgeon

2 Fellowship with God brings Purity 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. The more we get to know God, the more we will realise, how Holy He is

2 Fellowship with God brings Purity 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. If our talk does not match our walk our claims to having fellowship with God will be a lie

2 Fellowship with God brings Purity 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. Walking in the light of Jesus produces fellowship with one another and enables us to have cleansing from sin

2 Fellowship with God brings Purity 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Ephesians 5:7-14

2 Fellowship with God brings Purity 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Ephesians 5:7-14
